Home Is Right Where You Are (Inspired by Psalm 23) by Ruth Chou Simons

ISBN: 9781400244393
Hardcover $19.99 US
Purchase Here

My thoughts:
Through the centuries, Christians have recited and taken deeply to heart the comforting words of Psalm 23. It comforts, sooths, assures, restores, guides us during our darkest moments. Often it is one of the earliest Scriptures memorized and has been set to music many times. It settles us and brings our heart and very being home to God.

In this beautiful children's book, the author brings the child's mind and heart further to being at home with God.

The substance, or depth of God's message of comfort in Psalm 23 is gently spoken in the text of this beautiful book as a "parent" gently speaks to her "child" about where their home is right then at that moment and later as they journey through life. Their home is right with God.

This book will speak volumes to any parent, grandparent, or caregiver that reads it to a child. The reader's heart and mind will be refreshed to be reminded that God's presence is ever there and everywhere with the Child of God. He, our God, is our Home.

I highly, highly recommend this book.

About the book: This enchanting book is inspired by Psalm 23 and delivers a profound message of comfort and peace, reminding us that with God, home is always right where you are.

In Home Is Right Where You Are, Ruth Chou Simons combines her lyrical text with whimsical illustrations to take readers on a comforting journey. Drawing from the words she has shared with her own six children, Ruth’s tender narrative and captivating art reassure families that no matter where life leads, the Lord keeps us close and provides for all our needs.

Why You’ll Love This Book:

  • Comforting Assurance: Reassures children with the truth that God is always with them, guiding and providing.
  • Joyful Learning: Teaches that God is the source of joy, blessings, and adventure.
  • Beautiful Art: Delights with captivating illustrations that bring the message to life.
  • Soothe Anxious Minds: Offers comfort through the assurance of God’s presence and provision.

The Timeless Truths Bible & Timeless Faith

Timeless Faith

This week I had the opportunity to visit the prerevolutionary war capital city (New Bern) of the North Carolina colony. I reveled in the historic sites of Tyron Palace (Lord Tryon, Governor) and the beautiful Christ Church. I saw the foundation of the first Christ Church, established in 1715, now an outdoor "cathedral" as well as the stunningly beautiful Christ Church constructed in the years 1824 to 1875. While the history of this place of worship was personally moving and impressive in beauty and historic significance, what moved me most was the glass encased gifts from King George II  to the original Christ Church, and its congregation in 1752. These were:

  1. The Book of Common Prayer printed in 1752 and cover inscribed with the Royal Coat of Arms.
  2. The Holy Bible printed in 1717 at Oxford with outside covers inscribed with the Royal Coat of Arms.
  3. Silver Communion Service bearing the Arms of Great Britain: Chalice, plate, tray, etc.

Night Night, Zoo by Amy Parker & illustrated by Virginia Allyn from Thomas Nelson Pub. [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts:  This is such a sweet board book with lightly padded cover. Cheerful zoo animals grace the pages in bright colors. They romp across the pages as they cheerfully procrastinate bedtime.

The short rhymes take the reader on a tour of the zoo at bedtime as each animal interacts with a parent guiding the young one toward sleepy time. Typical of a family with young children being tenderly guided to bed by parents.

Each two-page spread features a specific animal: lions, zebras, panda bears, etc. And there is a sign placed on each lower right-hand page directing the reader to the next animal on the tour. Children will have fun finding the two mice that are involved at each stop on the tour and seeing how the mice interact.

A lovely little book that ends with a "God is in control" reminder.

About the book: Night Night, Zoo pairs the fun, rhyming text from bestselling author Amy Parker with the award-winning artwork of Virginia Allyn to help your kids wish their favorite zoo animals "Night night!" From tuckered out elephants to dozing zebras, your little wild one will love the colorful art of cute animals settling in for bedtime. The zoo theme features fun and exciting illustrations of wild animals, inviting your children to say "Night night!" to each animal and to the loving God who made them.

Night Night, Zoo is the perfect bedtime book for anyone who already loves Amy Parker's award-winning Night Night, Farm and Night Night, Train.

Really Woolly Christmas Blessings By DaySpring and Bonnie Rickner Jensen

ISBN: 9780718097417
Board Book $9.99

My thoughts: Grandmommies usually have a soft, warm-fuzzy spot for kiddie board books. Perhaps it began when our own children were young and had "cloth" books or the wide assortment of Little Golden Books. But back-in-the-day our little children didn't have good books that were charming, sturdy, and crafted with top of the line writing. I guess that tells how old this grandmommy is, but the truth of the matter is that I just love board books like Really Wooly Christmas Blessings.

This is a sturdy board book with slightly padded cover and sized just right for young (not tiny) hands to carry about. The sweet animals, angels, shepherds, and others with lovely colors are charming. Each two page spread is a story in verse and an accompanying Bible verse from the International Children's Bible. (Chat With Vera reader know my preference is KJV). There is a short prayer bringing an end to the reading.

The focus of this little book is blessings! The blessing of God's Plan. The blessing of baby Jesus! And on to the daily blessings of a friend, a song, light, etc. You can take a little one from Christmas time's wondrous story of the Saviour's birth into the child's daily life and teach him or her to recognize that there are blessings abounding all around us. The message of this book encompasses the might and power of the name of Jesus, His birth, His good news, His light. This is a powerful intro written in a sweet, heartwarming rhyme that will seat these truths into the heart and mind of a child.

Thomas Nelson Publishers and TommyNelson with DaySpring have produced a very nice little book for little ones. I highly recommend.

About the book: Christmastime is full of blessings, and the Really Woolly characters celebrate every part of the season—from time with family and friends, to sledding and decorating, to the joy of giving to others.

Cuddle up close with your little one, and enjoy the precious rhymes, meaningful Bible verses, simple prayers, and endearing illustrations that teach about the greatest Christmas gift of all—the birth of Jesus.

My thoughts: I am so very honored and happy to have the opportunity to share with you this new release of a King James Version of God's Word. Thomas Nelson Publishing always does a wonderful job of producing Bibles and this edition is no exception. My review is not intended to focus on arguing the pros or cons of a KJV translation but is simply to present my review of this study Bible and utilization of it as a study Bible.

The beauty and timeless accuracy of the King James Version continues to ring true and bring joy to this reader. I enjoyed using this Know the Word Study Bible as the verse-by-verse feature allowed clarifying insights into a variety of facts and information tied to specific verses - material that is both new to me and as reminders of previously gleaned knowledge.

Throughout the Bible there were inserts with topical material. The Topic by Topic articles are indexed at the beginning of the Bible and give the page that particular material can be found on. Maps found at the back of the Bible are typical and as usual interesting for those who enjoy visualizing the location of Biblical events. I found the map showing the actual locations of events in the life of Christ particularly interesting as well as the missionary journeys of Paul.

This is not a comprehensive study Bible. I personally believe the intended reader audience is probably those relatively new to the study of God's Word. That is not to negate the inclusive study material that supports the Biblical text, it is simply that the material is not as in depth as that which a seasoned student of Scripture would desire. It certainly is not on a level that a pastor or theologian would desire for personal use. It is a study Bible in that it offers information to aid in understanding one's reading of Scripture and lead the reader into deeper study utilizing these materials as well as more comprehensive aides.

Do I recommend this KJV Know the Word Study Bible? Absolutely! I love the KJV. I encourage everyone to find a study Bible that suits their particular level of Biblical knowledge. I believe this Study Bible will benefit many users. A large contingency of Bible readers prefer the NIV or some other translation. I encourage students of The Word to delve into the KJV along with whatever version you normally prefer for comparative reading. On a further note: the Know the Word Study Bible also comes in the NKJV version.

Precious Moments Little Book of Bible Stories by Jean Fisher (Published by Thomas Nelson)

ISBN:9780718097639
Board book $9.99
My thoughts:  This is a charmingly sweet Bible story book for the very young child that encompasses the entire scope of the Bible from The Beginning to The Ascension. The stories are just a few sentences and an accompanying short prayerful verse. The Scripture reference is given with condensed quote. Again, my preference would be King James Version. This little book uses the International Children's Bible.

The illustrations are absolutely charming and will captivate the child's attention. I do like that images of some characters are not the "Precious Moments" style. Example: Goliath looks to be a big, mean, fierce warrior. This sets the tone for that story as do the pictures portraying Jesus with the children and other stories. Jesus looks like a real person and the children are the "Precious Moments" style drawings.

A simplification of a story can not contain all the details and may seem inaccurate to some. I don't think that is the case in Little Book of Bible Stories. In the case of the story of Noah and the Flood, some animals were on the ark by two's and there were more than two of some of the animals. So when the storyteller says Noah took two of each, it is not necessarily an error, it is simplification for this particular "telling."

A lovely little book and one I can recommend.

About the book: Share beloved Bible stories with your little one!

Snuggle up close and imagine the animals entering Noah’s boat two by two, David standing before Goliath with just a slingshot, or Jesus blessing the children. These Bible stories will capture young hearts as they learn about God’s great love.

With classic Precious Moments® illustrations, simple Bible verses, favorite Bible stories, and fun rhymes, Little Book of Bible Stories will help introduce the power of God’s Word to your precious children.

ISBN: 9780718074883
Board Book $9.99 US - $12.50 CAN
My thoughts:  The "Make Believe Ideas" line of books is relatively new to my acquaintance, but I have been quite pleased with them. (See my review of All Things Bright and Beautiful - board book with handle).

The text of Big Look Bible Book is concise and tells the five major Bible stories main points and there is a nice focus on God in each story....
...they had not obeyed God....God kept them safe....God was with Joseph...God helped David win...God kept Daniel safe....a Son who would save all people....Son of God is born today!... bring joy to the world....God's Son, as was foretold!...Jesus saved us from sin.
The illustrations are cute, lively and in a full pallet of colors. The board book is sturdy and will withstand a lot of being lovingly treasured. The pages are each individually shaped which adds a somewhat unique aspect to the book.

Lovely and fun and a great way to introduce youngsters to the beloved stories of real people in the Bible. I recommend.

Nine favorite Bible stories are told in a fun style. Stories include Noah and the ark, Joseph, Moses, David and Goliath, Daniel and the lions’ den, the nativity, and many more!

My Lift-the-Flap Bible Stories By Thomas Nelson

My thoughts:  The world of "board books" for young children is evolving into a more substantial story book that encompasses a broader age spectrum. Obviously board books will hold up better in the hands of the young child and obviously lifting-the-flag is a means of engaging and capturing a young child's attention. And this My Lift-the-Flap Bible Stories is just that - a board book with a variety of flaps for the child to peek under.

The book also has more story or text than the typical board book. This is great because young children can and should be taught to sit for longer readings at an early age. So this book encompasses that broader spectrum of ages - the young listener and the later young reader. The Bible stories span the entire Bible with key stories for the child. The flaps reveal another part of the story - kind of a before and after scenario. And under the title of each story is the Scriptural reference so you can actually read the entire story straight from the Bible. Great for family devotions when an older child or an adult reads the Biblical text while the young child lifts the appropriate flaps.

I highly recommend this for homes with children.

About the book:  With more than 30 lift the flaps that move the story along and charming artwork, My Lift-the-Flap Bible Stories will delight little ones as they learn favorite Bible stories.

Young families looking for a way to engage their little ones with the Bible will love My Lift-the-Flap Bible Stories. Unique from other lift-the-flap books, each flap reveals the next part of the Bible story to keep the story moving. Search for Jonah falling into the belly of the whale, watch Jesus perform miracles, and welcome an angel waiting in the tomb by lifting the flaps to see the story revealed. Sweet art and easy-to-understand retellings of favorite Bible stories will delight parents and little ones alike. Teach your little ones about the stories of the Bible in fun, delightful ways through the My Lift-the-Flap Bible Stories!

My thoughts:  If you are not familiar with the lovely hymn "All Things Bright and Beautiful" you should really find it and listen, read the beautiful lyrics, and let it wash over your entirety. To teach a young child the concept that everything that God made, and He did make everything, is beautiful is a wondrous thing to accomplish. This bright and cheerful board book with softly padded cover (and even slightly rounded corners) and a nifty carrying handle can be a first step in helping you teach your wee little one that the Lord God made all things bright and beautiful.

I absolutely love the cute, bright, colorful illustrations that grace the pages of this little book. The textured "glitter" that accents the illustrations is an appealing addition that will "brighten" the day and the reading for the little ones.

This is a wonderful little book to give your little one or gift to a child. I highly recommend.

About the book: All Things Bright and Beautiful, a charming new padded board book for young children, will be a bright, glittery addition to any home.

NKJV Precious Moments® Precious Prayers Bible published by Thomas Nelson

ISBN13: 9780718090647
NKJV Precious Prayers Bible
I raised my children with a standard King James Bible and yet today the thinking is that the KJV is too hard for anyone to understand, especially children. The New King James Version is a somewhat updated (today's English) version of the KJV.

In the Precious Moments® Precious Prayers NKJV Bible, the publisher has the entire text of the Bible, study aids, and included colorful pages of classic poetic prayers for the young child. The artistic theme is that of the Precious Moments® category and brand. It is lovely. It is age appropriate. The prayers are worth reading and memorizing and will guide a child's thoughts toward God and belief in Him.

The Bible text itself is one that the young child (with parental guidance for respect and careful handling) can use throughout his or her childhood. The text size is 9.5 which is pretty good for reading. The pages of the Biblical text are, however, very thin and the text on the reverse side somewhat visible. This is a concern.

I personally prefer that the King James or the New King James versions be used rather than a "watered down" children's version to teach the young child God's Word. Bible "storybooks" that water down the actual text are great and serve a wonderful purpose. But when we teach a child to love, honor, and respect God's Word, let's give the child a true copy of God's Word. That, I believe, is the purpose of this NKJV Precious Moments® Precious Prayers Bible.

Please note in the product information below that this is a full-text Bible with eight pages for the child's personalized special moments, and 64 full color pages of classic  children's prayers. Also, there is extra material about how the Bible came to us, how to begin reading the Bible, getting to know God, maps, and much more.

Some prayers included are.....

Lord, teach this little child to pray,
And now accept my prayer;
Thou hearest every word I say,
For Thou art everywhere.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.

Book information:  Young children will delight in the pages of NKJV Precious Prayers, a Precious Moments® Bible. Full of the beloved Precious Moments® artwork and dozens of pages of full-color bonus material, this classic Bible will be a family treasure for years to come.

Written in the trustworthy New King James Version, this full-text Bible includes a special eight-page personalization area to record each child’s very own precious moments and events. Sixty-four color pages of classic children’s prayers are spread throughout NKJV Precious Moments® Precious Prayers, including themes of thanks, prayers of praise, prayers for school, for mealtime, for bedtime, for family, and so much more.

Young children will learn and embrace these prayers that will become lifetime favorites. Write down your little one’s prayers on full-color pages, creating a beautiful way to forever capture the innocence of their early faith journey! Featuring adorable Precious Moments® characters, this beautiful plush padded Bible with soft, eye-catching embellishments will be a treasured keepsake in any child’s library.

Children will be drawn to the soft, inviting illustrations, and parents will enjoy teaching the heartfelt prayers and the scriptures from the trustworthy New King James Version®.

Since 1978, Precious Moments has grown into an evergreen brand recognized worldwide, with more than 13 million books and Bibles sold. It is one of the most recognized and beloved licenses on the market today.

Same Kind of Different As Me for Kids Everybody Can Help Somebody By Ron Hall & Denver Moore

My thoughts:  This shortened, children's version of  previous bestseller "Same Kind of Different As Me" brings to children the concept that helping others is a good thing to do.

Denver Moore was a black child born into the poverty of tenant farming in the South and grew up with no education and virtually no toys. He escaped the farm in a train boxcar which he rode to Texas. Life in Texas was as hard or harder than the life he had left on the farm and he lived for years as a homeless person.

He found his way to a Mission where he was discovered by a couple who took him under their wing and helped him. This evolved into a speaking tour and a book which generated a large sum of money which was used to build a new Mission for the homeless.

A good story, but somehow it seems to miss the mark. Would I purchase it? Probably not. Would it be a good book for a library and why? Yes, and because it tells the story of helping others.

About the book: This remarkable story shows what can happen when we choose to help. Kids will discover that we can all make a difference—no matter how big or small we are and no matter how big or small the task.

Based on the New York Times bestseller Same Kind of Different As Me, which sold more than a million copies worldwide and inspired the major motion picture, this book tells the true story of Denver Moore and Ron Hall, who also created the delightful illustrations in this book.

Share the power of friendship and faith with your children.

Of Stillness and Storm by Michele Phoenix and published by Thomas Nelson [Review & Author Giveaway]

My thoughts: This is a very well written book though a hard-on-the-heart story to delve into.

The author takes us through the courtship and into the throes of a marriage giving the reader word pictures of the manipulation of the husband over the wife in things secular and spiritual. The husband feels and intensely believes he is called of God to serve in some vastly important way and a perchance meeting with a business acquaintance leads his heart to Nepal.

He begins to maneuver his life and that of his wife and young son in that direction against the desire of his wife and strong discouragement of the church elders. Being discouraged by the elders and seeing no support in that camp, they leave the church and the husband seeks support elsewhere.

They do go to Nepal. The wife and son are left for weeks in this strange land while the husband treks into the world he feels compelled to serve.

This story brings to bear the harshness of life for those serving in foreign fields. Fiction? Yes, but so revealing in its reality. Life is not easy or always benign for this missionary. This is the modern age, but even that does not ease the life of the families serving in countries other then their homeland - especially when it is forced on them by a husband unfeeling for the family needs.

A story such as this should compel husbands, wives, churches, mission boards, etc. to fully vet candidates who seek to minister afar. Not all are called. Not all are to serve afar. It behooves all to be diligent to determine the true call of God on their lives.

About the book: "I felt torn between two worlds. Each with its own mystery. One more captivating than the other, but the other more real and breathing."

It took Lauren and her husband ten years to achieve their dream--reaching primitive tribes in remote regions of Nepal. But while Sam treks into the Himalayas for weeks at a time, finding passion and purpose in his work among the needy, Lauren and Ryan stay behind, their daily reality more taxing than inspiring. For them, what started as a calling begins to feel like the family's undoing. At the peak of her isolation and disillusion, a friend from Lauren's past enters her life again. But as her communication with Aidan intensifies, so does the tension of coping with the present while reengaging with the past. It's thirteen-year-old Ryan who most keenly bears the brunt of her distraction.Intimate and bold, Of Stillness and Storm weaves profound dilemmas into a tale of troubled love and honorable intentions gone awry.

The Candidate: A Newsmakers Novel By Lis Wiehl with Sebastian Stuart Published by Thomas Nelson

My thoughts:  This was an interesting read for me. I found the author's style a bit different from that which I am most accustomed but I soon became acclimated to it and from then on the story flowed quite well.

Being published by Thomas Nelson. a HarpeCollinns Christian Publishing imprint, I was surprised that there was virtually no element of Christianity. In fact the seductive thoughts of two of the female characters showing a creepy attraction to each other was a major put-off for me. There were not any actual scenes depicting behavior to which Christian audiences would object, but inference was there.

The story takes place during an election year in the USA. This is quite appropriate as I completed reading the book on the heels of the current USA Presidential election. The plot begins with the candidate for President with his wife at a rally at which there is a bomb explosion from a backpack squarely in the crowd of onlookers and officials. Several are immediately killed. When this happens and soon after, a successful newscaster, Erica, observes the strange demeanor of Senator Mike Ortiz, one of the presidential candidates, who seems to behave as though he was under the  hypnotic control of someone else.

A number of events and tragedies occur which make for interesting, exciting, and even fearful reading as one considers, "Could this really happen" or "What if this should happen?" As the plot unfolds the deep depravity to which individuals could go in pursuit of the presidency is revealed.

What takes place? Actions of a female investigative journalist who has earned a position on the national stage. Conspiratorial mind control used by individuals and or internationals. Murderous goals and pursuant actions to achieve high political rank. And a believable presidential campaign rife with unbelievably criminal activities.

About the book: How far will a candidate go to become president? Erica Sparks—America’s top-rated cable-news host—is about to find out.

Mike Ortiz is a dynamic war hero favored to win the White House. Standing by his side is his glamorous and adoring wife, Celeste. But something about this seemingly perfect couple troubles Erica. Is Celeste really who she seems? And most importantly, what really happened in that squalid Al-Qaeda prison where Mike Ortiz spent nine months?

But more than the nation’s future is at stake. Erica’s relentless search for the truth puts the life of her preteen daughter Jenny in danger, even as Erica’s own dark past threatens to overtake her.

In her latest Newsmakers thriller, New York Times bestselling author and Fox News legal analyst Lis Wiehl weaves a taut and chilling story. The Candidate is packed with political intrigue and media manipulation as the lust for power turns deadly indeed.

An Amish Harvest: Four Novellas by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller, Amy Clipston, Vannetta Chapman [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: From time to time, I want to snag a collection of novellas, or a stand alone book novella, and read the complete but shorter stories that they entail. In An Autumn Harvest a superb collection of non-connected stories from four different authors presents stories true to gentle and faith filled Amish fiction.

I have previously read three of the four authors but Kathleen Fuller was a new author to me. I can only say good things about each of these stories and the writing skill of each of the authors.

Beth Wiseman handled the story of the abused wife with gentleness and realism. The gentle  Brock is the picture of kindness and strength of character. And then in Kathleen Fuller's story we have the opportunity to read how two flawed individuals try to cope with their differences or handicaps and how they eventually find a way to love. These are two difficult social issues beautifully written about by these two skilled authors.

I love how Vannetta Chapman writes grace and faith into her stories and touches a bit on romance and a bit on mystery. In Mischief in the Autumn Air these two late middle agers, who are single (widow and widower), find themselves pursuing puzzling folks who attend the auction and mysterious clues.

And Amy Clipston's Love and Buggy Rides is a sweet story of finding love even though there is an age difference and other obstacles in their relationsip. Again, a sweet Amish romance.

About the book: Faith, hope, and love remain forever in season in this collection of four richly absorbing novellas set amidst the wonder of an Amish autumn.

Under the Harvest Moon, by Beth Wiseman

When Naomi Dienner is suddenly widowed, she never expects to find love again . . . until she meets Brock Mulligan, an English family friend hired at harvest time. As a sinister presence begins to threaten Naomi, Brock seeks to prove himself trustworthy while struggling with growing feelings for Naomi and her children. Will God open Naomi’s heart—and give Brock his own second chance at love?

Love and Buggy Rides, by Amy Clipston

Itsy Bitsy Christmas You're Never Too Little for His Love By: Max Lucado THOMAS NELSON

ISBN: 9780718088873
About the book: "The King has come! Even for a little one like me!"

Do you ever feel like you are too small or too ordinary? This is just how Itsy and Bitsy feel. When these two charming little mice hear that a King is coming to Bethlehem, they set off with great enthusiasm to find Him. Along the way, they are met with discouraging words telling them they are too little and unimportant for any king. Just when Itsy and Bitsy begin to believe they really aren't big enough for the new King, they learn that Christ the King has indeed come for everyone.

Crafted by bestselling author and master storyteller Max Lucado, Itsy Bitsy Christmas helps children understand God's great love and know that He sent His Son for all of us--little or big, young or old.

My thoughts: I was really looking forward to this Max Lucado book for children about Christmas. Mr. Lucado's books are always beautifully done, artistically, and the message is always wonderfully presented by the author.

In Itsy Bitsy Christmas we have two little mice scurrying about Bethlehem because they heard a king was soon to come to Bethlehem and they wanted to see the king. They spoke to a variety of animals and all said no king would come to little tiny Bethlehem. And then they go back to the manger where the animals are and they see a tiny babe and know this is the king they had looked for.

The symbolism is that no matter how little or insignificant you are, the king comes for you. And though this is subtly presented (even says "for me" with an animal speaking), it is there. Jesus is king of all and he is savior of all and he comes for the smallest and most insignificant. This is a truth. It is not a truth that He, the Savior, has come to redeem or be king of the animals. He came to redeem mankind.

I loved the illustrations and they are great for a children's book and the expressions, activities, colors are spot on for the story being told.

What I didn't care for....... this doesn't seem to come up to previous publications by Mr. Lucado and his strong Christian teaching. The story is a bit absurd in places (mice peering inside a donkey's nose?). The story is a bit weak even for the young children for whom it is written. More of Christ's incarnation would have been appropriate and the Biblical importance of Christ's incarnation deserves better than little mice frolicking around Bethlehem.

A cute book, but not a favorite of Chat With Vera.

The Witnesses By Robert Whitlow Published by Thomas Nelson

About the book: Young lawyer Parker House is on the rise—until his grandfather’s mysterious past puts both of their lives in danger.

Parker House’s secret inheritance is either his greatest blessing . . . or his deadliest curse. The fresh-faced North Carolina attorney shares his German grandfather’s uncanny ability to see future events in his mind’s eye—a gift that has haunted 82-year-old Frank House through decades of trying to erase a murderous wartime past.

While Parker navigates the intrigue and politics of small-town courtroom law, Frank is forced to face his darkest regrets. Then, a big career break for Parker collides with a new love he longs to nurture and the nightmares his grandfather can no longer escape. Sudden peril threatens to shatter not only Parker’s legal prospects but also his life and the lives of those dearest to him.

Two witnesses, two paths, an uncertain future.

My thoughts: Robert Whitlow takes the reader to the stunningly beautiful North Carolina coastal town of New Bern. Rivers flow into the mighty Atlantic Ocean creating a sparkling gem of water and sky where fishing and boating in skiffs and yachts are par for the course. The story opens with newly graduated attorney, Parker House, set up in a New Bern practice and about to participate in a jury selection. It quickly ratcheted into the subtle mind quirkiness that is The Witnesses as Parker seems to have an uncanny sense of what to do. Just what makes Parker tick?

The story runs with two time lines - Germany during World War II and contemporary New Bern, NC. Worlds apart. Lifetimes apart. Yet, fully meshing one with the other.

While young Parker is discovering his own life, meeting clients and getting started as a legal counsel, he meets a young photographer who captures his heart. Parker's Opa (grandfather) is a sweetheart of an old man as is his long time friend and fishing buddy, Lenny.

I enjoyed the visits in the courtroom and the legalise planning and maneuvering. I enjoyed boating with the story's folks with the wind whipping through my hair just as it did Layla's. You see, I grew up in the North Carolina coastal city of Wilmington and know what these characters saw, felt, and loved. In short, I enjoyed The Witnesses and encourage those who enjoy Christian legal thrillers bathed in the beauty of a sea coast town to get a copy and get reading.

Dawn at Emberwilde by Sarah E. Ladd (Treasures of Surrey Series) [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: Sarah E. Ladd has written a graceful story about a young lady raised in a school for children from homes of lesser means or orphaned. As the book opens, she learns that she is not entirely without family and that she is being claimed and must now journey to the home of a previously unknown aunt.

She is treated as treasured for her beauty and who will be married off as quickly as possible. Without dowry to make a grand marriage, she is to be betrothed to the head of the local foundlings school. She has feelings of uncertainty about this gentleman and fears future involvement.

The beautiful and dark forest seems to beckon her, and her young sister. They are warned to stay away from it because danger lurks within. But little sister, Lizzie, wanders  into its depths, gets frightened by some scary men, and hides.

The story meanders along at a gentle pace giving the reader a glimpse into the status a poor relative has in the home of the landed gentry of England in the early 1800s. At her aunt's mercy and having no place else to go, young Isabel tries to adjust. With two handsome young men nearby, her heart discovers qualities and dislikes about them that give her pause to wonder.

A bit of a mystery. A glimpse into social mores of the time. A bit of danger. A sweet little eight year old. And a landed gentleman-magistrate. What an opportunity for a nice read. Written as Christian fiction, it is not pronounced in it's Biblical leanings. The work is clean, gentle, and you won't be afraid to let a young teen or a dear grandmother read it.

About the book: Isabel Creston never dared to dream that love could be hers. Now, at the edge of a forest filled with dark secrets, she faces a fateful choice between love and duty.

For as long as she can remember, beautiful and free-spirited Isabel has strained against the rules and rigidity of the Fellsworth School in the rolling English countryside. No longer a student, Isabel set her sights on a steady role as a teacher at the school, a safe yet stifling establishment that would enable her to care for her younger sister Lizzie, who was left in her care after her father's death.

The unexpected arrival of a stranger with news of unknown relatives turns Isabel's small, predictable world upside down, sweeping her and her young charge into a labyrinth of intrigue and hidden motives.

At her new family's invitation, Isabel and Lizzie relocate to Emberwilde, a sprawling estate adjacent to a vast, mysterious wood rife with rumors and ominous folklore---along with whispers of something far more sinister. Perhaps even more startling, two handsome men begin pursuing Isabel, forcing her to learn the delicate dance between attraction, the intricate rules of courtship, and the hopes of her heart.

At Emberwilde Isabel will discover that the key to unlocking the mystery of her past may also open the door to her future and security. But first she must find it---in the depths of Emberwilde Forest.

A Dream of Miracles by Ruth Reid (Amish Fiction from Thomas Nelson Publishing) [Review & Giveaway]

About the book: Amish widow Mattie vows never to love again . . . until a suspicious outsider with a shadowy past comes crashing into her fragile world.

Mattie Diener can barely keep it together. A young Amish widow and mother of two young children, she faces the lingering heartbreak of lost love, her son's mysterious illness, and a torrent of accusations that threaten to undo her.

Bo Lambright is a fast-rising social services investigator whose high-society mother won't rest until she finds his Mrs. Right. Despite Bo's worldly success, the raw ache of a shadowy past and a series of unsettling dreams have left him reeling.

When Mattie and Bo cross paths, all signs point to disaster. Yet as they face a crucible of trials and tragedies together, longings begin to stir that seem destined only to end in more heartbreak. Is a miracle possible---not only of healing but of forbidden love? What secrets lie in Bo's dreams? And will Mattie find the courage to face her uncertain future . . . or will she simply run away?

Reid2My thoughts: Prepare to have your heart bleed or break at the events and tragedies that beset this young Amish mother and widow as her life is embroiled in the fall out from rules set down by a society that she is not part of but which are in place to protect. These rules threaten to destroy the very life and existence she holds dear to her tender heart.

As one whose job it is to see that the rules that protect the tenderest of society are complied with, Bo Lambright confronts Mattie Diener and nearly destroys her in the process. But her gentle ways weaken Bo's resolve and he investigates further.

This is not your typical sweet and gentle Amish story of a people who shun modern conveniences and lifestyles. It is about misinterpretation, misunderstanding, and being misguided. It is a story worth the telling and worth the reading. And it is a story that would and should encourage all elements of society to think deeply before acting.

A highly recommended read and a well-written story by Ruth Reid.
