THE ADVOCATE by Randy Singer {Review & Giveaway}

ISBN: 9781414348605
About the book: Follow what law and legal representation was like in biblical times with Randy Singer's Christian historical fiction Advocate: He Defied an Empire & Inspired a Faith.

At the trial of Christ, Theophilus, brilliant young "assessore" raised in the Roman aristocracy, stands behind Pontius Pilate and whispers, "Offer to release Barabbas." The strategy backfires, and Theophilus never forgets the sight of an innocent man unjustly suffering the worst of all possible deaths--Roman crucifixion.

Three decades later, Theophilus has proven himself in the legal ranks of the Roman Empire. He has survived the insane rule of Caligula and has weathered the cruel tyrant's quest to control the woman he loves. He has endured the mindless violence of the gladiator games and the backstabbing intrigue of the treason trials.

Now he must face another evil Caesar, defending the man Paul in Nero's deranged court. Can Theophilus mount a defense that will keep another innocent man from execution? The advocate's first trial altered the course of history. His last will change the fate of an empire.

My thoughts: I typically do not read fiction involving Biblical characters because I personally believe that the Bible reveals what God wants us to know of historical Biblical characters. I realize, too, that history reveals some information about these people that is not actually revealed in the Biblical record.

When given the opportunity to review Randy Singer's newest novel, The Advocate, I declined with mixed emotions. 1) I thoroughly enjoy his style of writing and the fact that he writes good, clean fiction. 2) I respect Mr. Singer because he is a pastor, an attorney, an educator, and a gifted author. However, when a second opportunity came knocking at my door so I decided I would see just what Mr. Singer with his skills and background as pastor would do with this story of Theophilus.

This is a lengthy book of 470 pages. The story flows beautifully and Mr. Singer's style gives the reader a very enjoyable read. The history of Rome as one of the greatest empires ever is recounted accurately as far as I can determine, and Mr. Singer has done tremendous research to be able to bring Rome at the time of Christ alive to the reader. The unfathomable cruelty of the Caesars. The lust for blood. The corruption. The "religion" of the time and place bereft of Christ. All of this is thoroughly exposed in Mr. Singer's story. The story is not for the weak stomached.

Theophilus witnessed much in the trial of Christ. He was edu cated at the feet of men of status and great oratorical skills. He himself experienced cruelty at the hands of his peers. So goes the story as presented by Mr. Singer.

Now I still feel as though I can easily forego reading novels about characters in the Bible even though I found The Advocate to be a good read. This was not my most enjoyable book by Mr. Singer, but I did enjoy how he wrote the book, his style, and his attention to historical detail. I won't recommend it and I won't disparage it.

My Little "Life of Jesus" by Karen Williamson & illustrated by Amanda Enright

978-1-78128-131-4 | $8.99 | Hardcover |
Candle Books
About the book: My Little Life of Jesus introduces the story of Jesus' life to 3-to 5-year-olds. It follows Jesus from His birth, being baptized by John, meeting the disciples and teaching them how to pray, telling His stories to people in nearby towns and villages, right through to His return to the heavenly Father. Illustrated throughout with adorable artwork from a popular Candle Books artist, there is also a map included to show the land where Jesus lived. This padded hardcover comes complete with a presentation page for gift or award giving.

My thoughts: This little book is sized just right for the tiny hands of its intended audience. As an introduction to learning about Jesus and His life, this padded picture book brings just enough information to the child so that they can see that Jesus was a real person and lived among people.

The illustrations are cute and child-like and sure to please the youngster. Frankly, I prefer more realistic illustrations, but I do recognize the value of today's styles of illustration. They are colorful and filled with details with which the young child can engage.

The book begins prior to the birth of Jesus and says that Mary and Elizabeth were both "happy" at the upcoming birth of Jesus to Mary and John to Elizabeth. The Bible doesn't specifically say they were happy but uses terms like "my spirit rejoices" to expressed their delight. Happy is a term a young child can understand, though.

I like the little map that shows areas where Jesus lived. This is an interesting addition for a young child's book and it presents an opportunity for beginning map study. When Jesus teaches his disciples to pray using Matthew 6, the "Lord's Prayer" is very simplified. I would have preferred the version most quoted and recited and believe that even young children can learn it. No need for simplification.

The entire life cycle of Jesus is presented through His death and resurrection and His promise to return again.

All-in-all, this is a delightful little picture story book for young children.

Adeline Organic Eye Serum {Review}

Eye creams. Eye serums. Caring for the tender, thin skin around our eyes is vital for looking our best. Our age, stress, illness all take a toll on us first around our eyes, so using a means of defending that tender area is important.

Serums for the eye are pretty new to me. I've tried several - gels, semi-gels, and now the Adeline Organic Eye Serum which is a somewhat liquid product. It is a "slick" liquid that goes on pretty easily. You certainly doesn't need to use much.

I have found, in comparison, that the serum works better than creams when used at bedtime. I simply like the way my eyes feel and look in the morning after using a serum than after using a cream.

The Adeline Organic Eye Serum is very pleasant to use. I've used it a couple of weeks and found it beneficial. It is nice to know that the ingredients are organic and natural.

Product Description (from Adeline) Organic Eye Serum

Adeline has chosen only the most effective, natural ingredients to help you restore your youthful appearance:

  • Cucumber extract, like other extracts in the aloe family, moisturizes your skin to diminish lines and wrinkles.
  • Chamomile extract soothes the skin around your eyes and reduces puffiness.
  • Aloe Barbadensis leaf juice improves collagen production to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and crow's feet.
  • Sunflower seed oil contains antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E to prevent free radical damage, and fatty acids to prevent premature aging and promote new cell growth.
  • Usa Urvi leaf extract is a natural source of hydroquinone - reduces inflammation and the appearance of brown spots.
  • Great for Sensitive Skin. Serum is gentle and natural. Produced and packaged in a FDA-Certified facility. Organic Eye Serum is alcohol-free and paraben-free!
  • Just once a day is all it takes! Just apply Organic Eye Serum before bed and let it work while you sleep!

Foxbrim Peptide Complex Serum {Review}

I've tried several Foxbrim products and enjoyed each one. The opportunity to try the Foxbrim Peptide Complex Serum came along and I jumped at the chance to do so.  I tried a couple of peptide products several years ago from a high end cosmetic company and thought that these might be nice to use. They were, however, too pricey for my pocketbook. This Foxbrim Peptide is affordably priced.

Now what do I think of this product?

  • I found it very thick for a serum. When I tried to dispense it using the dropper, it was not going into the dropper as serums usually do. It seemed that the dropper was pulling air instead of serum. I'd have to kind of stir and then depress the dropper bulb to engage the serum.
  • The serum goes on the face nicely. I don't notice any fragrance or odor. It does tend to have a "tacky" feel as it dries. But this is not such that would  make it undesirable to use.
  • After applying the serum, I used my morning moisturizer. Then I applied my makeup for the day. Works fine.
  • I have not noticed any real improvement in my skin after using it for a couple of weeks. But neither have I noticed any detrimental effects.

Product Description (from Foxbrim) Foxbrim's Peptide Complex Serum works to effectively create a healthy environment for beautifully radiant skin. Working from the inside out, Peptides signal the body for additional collagen production. Moisturizing agents Hyaluronic Acid & Vitamin E invigorate and hydrate skin.

Key Ingredients:

Peppermint Essential Oil by Majestic Pure Cosmeceuticals

I am absolutely clueless when it comes to using essential oils but I've heard so many positive uses for them and heard folks rave about how beneficial they are that I felt I simply had to try them out. So when presented with the opportunity to review the Majestic Pure Cosmeceuticals Peppermint Oil, I was quite delighted.

I don't have a diffuser so I couldn't utilize that dispensing method. But I did try several things.....
  • I dabbed a bit onto my temples (suppose to help with headaches). I found this a bit heavy handed (or perhaps I was a bit heavy handed). It didn't cause my skin to break out or become irritated, so perhaps this will be an option when the next major headache hits.
  • I put some into my bath on a couple of occasions along with some rosehip oil. Nice aroma and hopefully helpful.
  • I put a few drops into a small Corning Ware pot filled with water. I slowly simmered this until the water all simmered out. Very nice to breathe this in but don't want to be right next to it in the kitchen.
  • I had a bit of a stuffy nose the other morning and so while I was dressing and getting myself ready for work, I filled the bath wash basin with very hot water and added a few drops of the peppermint oil into it. Closed the bathroom door and - wow! What a nice head-opener. I think this is a winner when you have a stuffy nose or head cold.
I still don't know much about essential oils, but I do see there are uses for them. I had hoped this peppermint oil could be used in tea, but sadly the label indicated this was not for ingestion - only external use.

Product Description (from Majestic Pure Cosmeceuticals) - Many Household Uses and Benefits- Essential Oil Supports Digestive & Respiratory Health, Eases Stomach & Head Discomfort, Refreshing and Relaxing - Natural Insect Repellent, Helps to Keep Bug Diseases Away.

  • PREMIUM QUALITY PEPPERMINT OIL - Therapeutic Grade!
  • POWERFUL AND PURIFYING: Peppermint Oil is known to relieve headaches and anxiety, helps ease respiratory problems, works to ease symptoms of asthma, helps with stomach and bowel spasms, as well as helps to relieve fever, and arthritis pain. It's also helpful is soothing the mind and body with aromatherapy. It's safe for topical application, although it is necessary to dilute with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil.
  • MULTIPLE USES: Peppermint offers multiple household uses. It provides a wonderful cooling sensation while it naturally alleviates discomfort. Our oil is 100% is NON-TOXIC and perfect for use around the home and gardens. It is effective in repelling mice, spiders, ants, fleas, lice, roaches and rodents.

Murder Tightly Knit (Amish Village Mystery #2) by Vannetta Chapman [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN13: 9780310325697
About the book: In a town where Amish and Englisch mingle every day, a grisly murder leads to mutual suspicion. Can Amber and Hannah find the killer before fear unravels the community . . . or he strikes again?

Now, as leaves of brown, gold, and orange blanket Middlebury, Indiana, Owen lies dead on the Pumpkinvine Trail. The only clues to the murderer’s identity point in two very different directions.

The police call in a federal investigator, but Hannah and Village manager Amber Bowman are in no mood to wait for them to figure out what they already know—that no one from the Amish Village could have killed Owen Esch.

Amber and Hannah will need to work quickly to solve the murder mystery and bring harmony back to the Amish community.

My thoughts: In the first book of the Amish Village Mystery series, Murder Simply Brewed (read my review-click here), the author takes the reader into a lovely, quiet village of touristy, shopper friendly shops. These are manned by folks of the Amish faith as well as non-Amish and they work well together. The series is a gentle read in the genre of cozy mystery. Prepare as you open the pages of Murder Tightly Knit to have this gentle atmosphere shattered with the murder of a local Amish man whose heart was pierced with the arrow of a crossbow.

While the story opens with the shattering of peace that normally surrounds the village, the story flows with a gentle rhythm as good folks work together and in desperation to find the killer.

I thought it interesting that the author wove into the story the growth of survivalist groups and their varied agendas that cause concern and investigation by the government. The Amish are grouped with survivalists of a darker motive, yet the Amish are just a naturally conservative group that believes in harvesting their bounty and in preparing for the future with what God allows. While not an integral part of the story, it does, however, factor in to the activities of the characters.

Chapman writes a good story. It is clean. It presents the Amish lifestyle and faith with clarity and respect. The solution to the mystery is not easy to determine (at least for this reader). I like that the story had the killer speak between chapters. He revealed a little of himself, but not enough to solve the mystery. Of course, he wasn't speaking to anyone - it was just "himself" on the pages for the reader to get to know a bit of.

I recommend this book as a good, clean, relaxing cozy mystery that is faith based.

Hidden Agenda by Lisa Harris

                      ISBN: 9780800721923
About the book: His cover is blown. Now his enemies are on his heels and closing in.

Presumed dead by friends and family, Michael Hunt is alive--and on the run. The undercover assignment he's been working for the past eight months has just been blown. With a hit out on his life and corruption inside the Atlanta police department, Michael finds himself hunted by both the cartel and the law. His only hope is Olivia Hamilton--the daughter of the man who wants him dead.

This nonstop chase from Christy Award-winning Lisa Harris will leave you breathless.

My thoughts: Lisa Harris has again written an action packed, fast moving suspense that involves the dangerous world of drugs and money laundering. A successful real estate corporate head is father to Olivia and Ivan who live normal lives but only see their father a couple of times a year on his ocean front estate. They become involved in the nefarious activities revolving around their father when Ivan accidentally witnesses the murder of a man and sees a second man about to receive the same fate. The two young people rescue Michael, the doomed man, in a night boat escape.

This  begins the chase. There are bad men of every stripe out to get them. And Olivia and Ivan discover more and more about the life their father has kept hidden in the shadows.

Michael, the injured man they rescued, is an undercover policeman and his life is very much in danger. He is pursued and he is also the pursuer.

The twists and turns of this story take the reader into the minds of criminals and also police. As the conclusion of Lisa Harris' three book Southern Crimes series, this is a winner.

About the author: Lisa Harris is the award-winning author of more than twenty books, including the Christy Award winner Dangerous Passage and Fatal Exchange. Winner of the Best Inspirational Suspense Novel for 2011 from Romantic Times, Harris has spent over ten years living with her family as missionaries in Mozambique, where she leads a women's group and runs a nonprofit organization that works alongside their church-planting ministry. If You Were Me & Lived in Greece...... Peru [A child's introduction to cultures] (Review & Giveaway)

About the series: It's never too early to start teaching children about the world around them. This educational series about the cultures of the world speaks to young children about the topics that interest them, such as the foods people eat, the names of boys and girls, and the activities that children their age living in a foreign land are likely to engage in. Basic information is offered in a playful way that won't overwhelm children.

Today we're looking at Carole P. Roman's latest two books in the series, Peru and Greece.

Greece

In If You Were Me and Lived in...Greece, early learners get a taste of what their life would be like if they lived in Greece while being introduced to the birthplace of democracy. This exciting visit to Greece also introduces the important concept of democracy to children and highlights some of the other cultural contributions that Greece has made to Western civilization.

There are illustrations depicting current life and part of the history of Greece. As in the other books in the series, the reader will learn what he would call his mother and father and his grandparents. What the name of money for that country is and the name of a toy they might purchase for themselves. Holidays and school are touched on. In the back of the book, there are words with pronunciation guides that aid in understanding.

Peru

In  If You Were Me and Lived in Peru, you discover South America and gain a colorful glimpse into what living in Peru is like. Highlighting a myriad of topics, including language, cuisine, climate, and history, this book teaches kids about diversity while also revealing to them the important truth that we are all connected.

I like that the author has touched on the history of the Inca in Peru and the ancient city built on a mountain. Also, that the potato is indigenous to Peru and a staple in their diet.

The books "Greece" and "Peru" follow the stylized pattern that Roman has established for this series. To date she has published books on the following: South Korea, France, Norway, Kenya, Turkey, India,  Australia, Russia, Portugal, Greece, and Peru.

GIVEAWAY: Use the Rafflecopter form below to enter. You may be blessed to be the winner of  one copy each of "Greece" and "Peru" that Carole P.Roman is so generously providing. Begins January 18 & ENDS February 9  @ 12:01 a.m. EDT. Open to USA addresses only.

I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen (Review & Giveaway)

I Want My Hat Back
is one of 4 books in giveaway
About the book: The bear's hat is gone, and he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no, some more elaborately than others. But just as the bear begins to despond, a deer comes by and asks a simple question that sparks the bear's memory and renews his search with a vengeance. Told completely in dialogue, this delicious take on the classic repetitive tale plays out in sly illustrations laced with visual humor— and winks at the reader with a wry irreverence that will have kids of all ages thrilled to be in on the joke.

My thoughts: I Want My Hat Back has justly won multiple awards. Written and illustrated for young children, adults reading this book filled with droll art will enjoy the subtle humor.

The repeated phrase Have you seen my hat? asked by bear of a variety of woodland critters is expressionless. The replies of the critters are simple and varied. No conversational punctuation is used in the book but varied colored text for the replies is done. Manners are gentle and good behavior by all is evident.

Bear finally has an "ah-ha" moment when he realizes he has seen his hat. He realizes he has been lied to by one of the critters. The realization moment is captured using vivid red on the page as opposed to the basic sand colored pages and browns of the other pages. Bear races back to the one he realizes has his hat.

No harsh scenes are given but a subtle indication that the offending critter has justly met his "bear-end" is crafted in the art.

Adeline Anti Aging Moisturizer Cream with Matrixyl {Review}

Have you recently looked at pictures from 50, 75, 100 years ago of ladies of those years? Have you noticed their faces - faces of 40, 50, 60 year old ladies? Now have you looked at pictures of faces of ladies of the same age in today's world? I don't mean celebrities. I mean snapshots of ladies. Candids. If so, what did you notice?

I tell you what I notice. I notice that ladies or women of 100 years ago, when they were 30 they mostly looked like women of 50 years today. When they were 50, they looked like women of 75 years today. Sad. So sad. Was life that hard? Where conditions such that these dear ladies aged in appearance much faster?

In many ways, life was harder and yes conditions were worse. But then, 100 years ago most women didn't smoke. But even women who lived a life of comparative ease seem older appearing in pictures than women of like age today. Part of this is because today women's labor is lighter - no wash tubs and scrub boards. Part of it is because today's woman is not likely to be helping to pull the plow in the field. And a big part is taking care of our skin.

We take care of our skin by protecting it from the sun. We keep it clean. We eat foods that are agreeable with our systems and that promote healthy living. Because of wonderful transportation and refrigeration, we are able to enjoy fruits, vegetables, and meats in quantity and all year around. This is good for our health and it is good for healthy, glowing skin.

But we also take care of our skin by protecting it from the elements with serums, oils, and moisturizers. There is a multitude of products available for us to choose from - some expensive and some affordable. There are those that seem to do very little and those that seem to give our faces a glow and radiance that makes us feel lovely.

The Adeline line of products has a lovely anti aging moisturizer cream that includes Matrixyl and other wonderful ingredients. I have been using this for about two weeks. I really like it. The moisturizer is dispensed from a little pump bottle which is nice. It is a light weight cream that goes on very smoothly. I sense some scent but not a perfumey scent. It is pleasant and stimulating and the scent dissipates very rapidly. I found it very pleasant to use.

After applying the product and allowing a few moments for it to dry, my liquid foundation makeup was easy to apply and looked good throughout the day. That means, to me, that the moisturizer didn't work against the foundation but rather with it.

This is a product I can recommend as it works for me.

CANDLEWICK PRESS EARNS 10 “BEST OF” NODS IN THE DISTINGUISHED RANKINGS

One of the most prominent news magazines in the U.S., TIME magazine, has declared we are living in a “golden age” of children’s and young adult books. With the assistance of industry experts, reviewers, and major literacy non-profits, TIME has compiled a list to honor the all-time classics, both old and new.

Candlewick Press, a leading independent children’s book publisher based near Boston, Massachusetts, is proud to announce ten titles from its publishing list have been selected for inclusion – all remarkable works of writing and illustrating – that have established themselves as enduring favorites via critical and commercial success.
