 Grow Wild My Child

My thoughts:  This is a lovely book about a child, or children, who live in a location and have the opportunity to wander the out-of-doors where they live and explore, investigate, handle, see, create, utilize, and just generally make the out-of-doors their world of play and intellectual growth. It is a dying existence. And that is a true shame.

Unstructured play and time to explore the world around them is the best way for a child to grow and develop their minds and bodies. It doesn't replace intellectual stimulation that comes from books, creative art and music, and education or educational play. But it is a vital aspect of humanity and the growth of the human mind and experience.

That being said, in Grow Wild My Child the author takes the reader on a meandering journey through the seasons as children - specifically a young boy - explore and play with the world outside. I love the story and the parent's recognition that her child's interest in the outside world is good for him. The illustrations beautifully follow the child on his explorations. 

The rhyming text is not the best "poetry," but it has a certain aspect that enhances the reading. 

Now a little down side to the story and title..... the use of the word "Wild." No parent wants a truly wild child, untamed, uncivilized, untrained, uneducated. So implanting the idea in the mind of a young child that behavior that is "wild" is o.k. is treading on thin ice. I see the intent of the author, but just have that slight concern that it could be misinterpreted.

All-in-all I think this is a very good book and I recommend it.

My thoughts:  I love when books (and parents) tell the stories of real live heroes rather than fiction super heroes that zip and zap through the air and shoot bolts of lightning from their fists performing superhuman feats. Real people are much greater and inspiring. They are much greater for children to aspire to emulate themselves.

In Mr. Adam Kinzinger's first children's book, he looks at heroes in different walks of life. The boy living this story has a father that is a pilot - super stuff in a boy's eyes. The father gives his son a tour of the United States via his own plane to learn about the many heroes that live all around us.

Focusing on acts of kindness as well as heroic acts, this story guides the reader's thoughts toward the whole of society as it engages in deeds done to help others. It ends with the thought that "Heroes put others first!" Indeed, an apt definition of a hero.

My thoughts:  Lots of good take aways from this sweet book. The changes that come into our lives; and in this story, it is the change of homes. Leaving one's home is hard and that is especially true for a child who has known no other home. But change is inevitable in our lives, and so changing a place of residence teaches the way, the right way, to accept and adapt to change. In this case, the story teaches that even though we are in a new place, a new house, a new home, "We are Home When We're Together." This helps teach the lesson of the provision and provenance of God in the changes in our lives. 

There are some pages of really good illustrations in this sweet book, and some I didn't care for as much. I especially liked the winter scene, the beach/ocean scene,  page of high rise apartments, the country farm scene, and the home in the desert. I think my favorite is the winter scene.

And I especially enjoyed finding the wee mouse family that accompanied the family in the journey to change their residence. This is a real treat.

We Are Home When We're Together is a story of trust in God. A story of God's plans for you. And a way to accept changes in our lives with the help of God. Good lessons, sweetly taught. A good book.

My thoughts:  A gorgeous book in large, over-sized format yet light weight for young hands, the narrative of author N.T. Wright's re-telling of the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus, the Christ child, is beautifully accurate and gentle in the telling. The cover art immediately captures one's attention with the darkness of night, glow of light, and reverence of characters as the Son of God is laid in a manger.

Recounting for young minds the advent of our Saviour from the angel's declaration to Mary and culminating in the journey from the safety of Egypt to their home in Galilee. The text flows gently yet with intentional accuracy. There are no added-in myths, barn-yard creatures, drummer-boys, etc. that is encountered in many of modern nativity books.

As is true of the entirety of the Bible, woven throughout and foremost in the narrative is Jesus. And just as it is told as a story, the last of the book gives the reader (and parents) a glimpse into the promises of God to send a redeemer.

A couple of pages at the end of the book tell of Old Testament promises, with lovely images, that bring together the story of the Christ child being foretold. A wonderful opportunity to teach cohesiveness of the Bible and the prophecies fulfilled.

This is a beautiful recounting that will be treasured.

My thoughts:  This is a delightful picture story about a young family that reaches for and achieves a wonderful goal of family life - building their own home in a location they cherish. Beautiful and charming illustrations bring the story to life and set the tone of happiness and joy they experienced each step of their journey.

I love that they are all involved from the initial step of acquiring the land to the planting of wildflowers and getting little chicks. Tiny ducklings swimming in the sink, kittens in the blanket, wildflowers abloom. Lovely. Charming. Sweet.

What is totally surprising is to reach the end of the book and see that this is the story of a real family and the reality of their friendly farmhouse. Love it!

My thoughts:  Mattis is a real dog and Mark Tappan is a real person, a policeman, and the handler of Mattis. They are real and they provide a fantastic service to the people in the area in which they live.

In this informative and delightful children's picture book, K9 Mattis On the Job: A Day in the Life of a Police Dog, we see how a trained German Shepherd dog is incorporated into the activities and services of the police. We see his exuberance, antics, skills, and abilities to engage. The story-line doesn't show real on-the-job rescues or criminal-nabbing, but it does show how a trained dog can mesh seamlessly into the day-to-day office and field work of a police department that uses K9 "officers" as well a real men. The book shows community service of education in the school demonstrating to students the fun of a K9 Police Dog as well as the dog's tracking and finding abilities.

Cheerfully and exuberantly illustrated, K9 Mattis and his human, Sergeant Mark Tappan, go through the day either in service of rescue or nabbing criminals, education in the community, or simply training and practicing. I think kids will thoroughly enjoy this educational book.

As the gentle, lightly rhyming text takes the reader through a day, the illustrations use a beautiful backdrop on each page and place a group of children discovering bits and pieces of what is about them. A bunch of ants marching in parade and bees gathering honey. The amazing plethora of discoveries to be made on a walk through the forest. And an imaginative look at the ground beneath their feet and the world it holds.

This is a lovely, gentle book with an impactful message to nurture the child's curious nature and share that which you see and discover with those about you.

While Tommy Nelson Children's Books is traditionally a Christian publishing house, there is no mention of God or Scripture in this book.

My thoughts:   Boys and their trucks and cars! They never outgrow them! When little they make their own varoom!! sounds revving engines and zipping their cars and trucks - large and small - across the floor. Dads love race cars and watching the races; and often kiddies sit beside dad as he watches. Both revving their internal engines.

In Buster and the Christmas Parade kids will find a lot of racing or car terms..... popped the hood, oil running hot, slammed on his brakes, threw in reverse, tight turn. Plus, the story takes some exciting runs and turns. Its all about a team welcoming a newcomer and being friendly. About getting along with one another. Team play. And getting the job done.

My thoughts: I really look forward to each of the "Indescribable" children's books written by or under the guidance of Louie Giglio. They provide an entertaining resource for children's educational pursuits. They don't have to meld with a particular curriculum. They are simply books from which children delight to read and learn. They are on-topic resources that are dependable for articulating researched information.

In the Indescribable Atlas Adventures: An Explorer's Guide to..... readers will explore the continents and the countries. They will learn historical, geographic, and ecological information. Parents should realize that this is not an in depth atlas. It is a children's book intended to introduce and educate the young mind. It is delightfully attractive, beautifully colored, insightful, educational, factual. The book is large but not too large or heavy for a young child to handle. It isn't a toddler's book though kindergartners through about fifth graders will benefit from it.

As an atlas it does not show specific areas such as mountain ranges, capitals, rivers, etc. It is generalized and provides short factoids about the pictured area and/or components. Being a faith-based publication, it shares short encouragements toward faith as well as pointing out historic Biblical events or persons when appropriate. Generally speaking, this is a "soft-atlas" that introduces children to the world and is faith-based in intention.

I highly recommend this and other works from Tommy Nelson publications in the "Indescribable Kids" line of books.

My thoughts:  Through the centuries, Christians have recited and taken deeply to heart the comforting words of Psalm 23. It comforts, sooths, assures, restores, guides us during our darkest moments. Often it is one of the earliest Scriptures memorized and has been set to music many times. It settles us and brings our heart and very being home to God.

In this beautiful children's book, the author brings the child's mind and heart further to being at home with God.

The substance, or depth of God's message of comfort in Psalm 23 is gently spoken in the text of this beautiful book as a "parent" gently speaks to her "child" about where their home is right then at that moment and later as they journey through life. Their home is right with God.

My thoughts:  Friends Jack & Scarlett are on a camping trip and they are having a happy, joyous time. They are enjoying the out-of-doors and finding things to do. They are very happy. 

Adorable illustrations capture the fun of camping. There are several prompts suggesting child involvement - touch, count, find. And finally, at the back of the book, are the words to the beloved song "I've Got the Joy." 

I love this little book and recommend it.

My thoughts: A charming and sweet animal story about fear and trusting God to take care of yourself. Prayer. Singing. Trust. 

The words for singing "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands"  are at the end of the book and opens an opportunity to joyfully sing this beloved song. If it isn't know to the family, then search for the music online and learn it. What an opportunity to have joy in the midst of fear.

I recommend this sweet book from Tommy Nelson books.

My thoughts:  I was delighted to see that Louie Giglio has produced another book for youngsters that is faith based, mind stimulating, and with science activities that will expand their mental capacity and affirm their faith in God.

I previously reviewed several of Mr. Giglio's books and each time felt it a privilege to be involved in promoting his publications. He understands kids and knows his science. His faith shines through.

My thoughts: Absolutely gorgeous! I loved the companion book by Amy Kavelaris when I had the opportunity to review it - Good Night, My Darling Dear. This latest release continues with a morning book - Good Morning, Little One.

These books are definitely keepsake quality that you don't want to miss. I encourage your to purchase both for your little one or for gifting to bless a sweet child.
