When Do I Love You? By Tommy Nelson Books and Published by Thomas Nelson

Find it on Amazon -Click Here
My thoughts:  Sweet! Suitable for boys or girls. A little larger than some board books so the young toddlers might have a little difficult holding it. But they'll soon grow to it.

The book and the ideas expressed in words and pictures convey a sense that no matter where, no matter what, "I love you."

Each page is a different critter so we romp through pages of love in the animal kingdom. But it ends with a "you" page where a real human Mommy and child are pictured.

I absolutely love the opening page that pictures a red pickup truck. Perhaps it is because my son has had a red pickup for years and drove his family around in it. And now one of my grandsons has a red pickup and has a brand new grand-grandson who will ride around in the red pickup. So right off this book will become special  in the family.

So "When Do I Love You?" - why always......

Addorable and one I can highly recommend.

About the book:
When do I love you, little lizard?
Would I love you in a blizzard?
Even if the snow reaches up to your eyes,
I will be here, standing right by your side.

Remind your little one of your unending love with the playful rhymes of When Do I Love You?,a silly and charming board book that will make you laugh as it warms your heart.

With supersilly pictures of lizards in blizzards, goats in boats, and ducks in trucks, When Do I Love You? maintains a classic emotive tone that parents will love. The perfect gift for baby showers, birthday parties, or as an extraspecial "just because!" gift, this sweet book will be a favorite in your family for years to come.

Tell Her No Lies by Kelly Irvin

My thoughts:  The reader jumps in with both feet and hits the ground running as the pages turn at the beginning of "Tell Her No Lies." The author doesn't, though, keep up the rapid fire pace as the story progresses. A bit of a lag. That doesn't, however,  deter the reader from pursing this who-dunnit.

This book doesn't just tell the tale of who killed the judge. There are multiple murders and a slew of suspects.

Underlying the multi-layered suspense is the heroin's involvement with her photographic art and poetry that draws attention to the "homeless experience." She is a volunteer and supporter of efforts to help the homeless.

But this is not a societal issues propaganda story. This is a suspense with a bit of romance (just enough to call it Romantic Suspense). The "homeless experience" is a force from horrific memories in Nina's own personal life. The thread is woven into her very thought and experiences on a daily basis. She was a homeless waif along with her younger sister until rescued by her Uncle - the Judge that was found murdered at the beginning of the story.

So while the story lagged a bit and whilst it had more "murders" than I care to have sprinkled in books I read, the story was good. The detectives did their work and the case or cases were solved.

About the book: Combining romance and suspense, bestselling author Kelly Irvin’s Tell Her No Lies is a high-stakes race for the truth.

“A moving and compelling tale about the power of grace and forgiveness that reminds us how we become strongest in our most broken moments.”—Library Journal review of Upon a Spring Breeze

Even the most admired families have secrets to hide . . .

Nina Fischer carries a camera wherever she goes—so she can view life through a filter. Safely. After her mother abandoned her to the streets, Nina has kept people at a distance, including her uncle, who adopted Nina and her sister. Wealthy and proud, he is a good man, a fair judge, and someone many in San Antonio admire.

But when he is murdered, and the detective assigned to the case accuses Nina of the crime, she knows she must act. She’s determined to use her journalism background to find the real killer. The two men in her life want to help, but can she trust them? She’s known Rick since they were children, but now he’s an attorney whose political aspirations seem more important than Nina’s tragic loss. And then there’s Aaron, a news videographer; using their friendship could break the biggest story of his career.

Following the evidence leads Nina on a journey of discovery into her father’s shocking masquerade as a law-abiding, family-loving Christian. Unlocking these secrets could prove fatal, but it’s the only way Nina will ever be able to trust love again.

Combining romance and suspense, bestselling author Kelly Irvin’s Tell Her No Lies is a high-stakes race for the truth.

Catching Christmas by Terri Blackstock - Published by Thomas Nelson

My thoughts:  This is certainly one of those "do not miss reading" books. Each of the main characters will fill your heart with love and appreciation. Most of all, you will fall head-over-heals in love the the granny of the story, Miss Callie.

The reluctant rescuer or man-of-the-hour is the cab driver whose heart won't let him let Miss Callie down. And then there is the granddaughter, Sydney, who isn't aware of all that is happening to Grandma Callie because she is caught up in her cutthroat life at the big law firm.

You'll need tissues. You'll laugh. You'll gasp and think, "Whoever would do THAT." And you'll get that wonderful warm, fuzzy, feel-good heartfelt sense that we all seek after when we choose a "Christmas read."

This is special. Don't miss it.

About the book: The first Christmas story from New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Terri Blackstock.

“The feel-good Christmas book of the year. Blackstock’s tale of love and redemption wrapped in a holiday bow will leave you smiling. Don’t miss Catching Christmas.” —New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hauck

Story line: This Year, Christmas Comes Just in Time

As a first-year law associate, Sydney Batson knows she will be updating her resume by New Year’s if she loses her current court case. So when her grandmother gets inexplicably ill while she’s in court, Sydney arranges for a cab to get her to the clinic.

The last thing cab driver Finn Parrish wants is to be saddled with a wheelchair-bound old lady with dementia. But because Miss Callie reminds him of his own mother, whom he failed miserably in her last days, he can’t say no when she keeps calling him for rides. Once a successful gourmet chef, Finn’s biggest concern now is making his rent, but half the time Callie doesn’t remember to pay him. And as she starts to feel better, she leads him on wild goose chases to find a Christmas date for her granddaughter.

When Finn meets Sydney, he’s quite sure that she’s never needed help finding a date. Does Miss Callie have an ulterior motive, or is this just a mission driven by delusions? He’s willing to do whatever he can to help fulfill Callie’s Christmas wish. He just never expected to be a vital part of it.

Jesus Calling: The Story of Christmas By Sarah Young (Published by Thomas Nelson)

ISBN: 9781400210299
$17.99 Hardcover
My thoughts:  Beautiful! One word sums up the appearance of this lovely children's book. Heartwarming and Biblically sound* packed with blessings is another way to sum up the book for its content. And just what is different about this re-telling of the beloved story of our Savior's birth - His first advent? Well, the difference is that we learn (and even a small child can learn) that this babe in the  manger existed before Creation and will exist for all eternity. Let's see....

On the cover one would think this is your standard children's picture book telling about that night long ago when the Christ Child was born. The illustrations throughout lend themselves to a book style for young children. The text and subject matter are not, however, for the very young. I'm thinking it is a good picture book for the elementary age child that is ready for more information. There is opportunity to do some real teaching of Scripture with this picture book since it explains how the plan for Jesus' coming to Earth was always God's plan and that it goes to the beginning of man's creation and existence here on Earth.

After giving the lineage of Jesus and how the prophets foretold the coming of Jesus as Messiah, the story moved on to the birth of Jesus' cousin, John. Then the book moved through the remainder of the Christmas story and into Jesus' childhood in Nazareth.

I see this as suitable for family read-aloud times or devotional times when the children can ask questions and parents can lead a discussion of the way God's plan for Jesus to come to Earth worked through the ages.

About the book:  Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas uniquely teaches the Christmas story to your children by starting at creation and sharing that Jesus has always been present and that God has always had a plan for Christmas. Bible verses and Jesus Calling devotions are on every spread of this beautifully illustrated book with foil and glitter on the cover.

Teach your children the story of Christmas . . . starting from creation! In Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas, children will discover that God always had a plan for Christmas.
Christ was chosen before the world was made. —1 Peter 1:20
The Christmas story began long, long ago. Before the angel Gabriel told Mary she would have God's Son. Before the shepherds saw the angels and before the wise men saw the star.

Even before the sun and the moon shone for the first time, before the first cows ever mooed and the first monkeys ever climbed! Before Adam and Even took their first walk in the Garden of Eden, God had a plan for Christmas.

From the beginning of time, God had a plan to save his children. That plan was Jesus!

Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas is a beautifully embellished jacketed hardcover with foil and glitter. Curl up with your little ones around the Christmas tree with Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas.

*I question the genealogy given.

God Always Keeps His Promises by Max Lucado from Thomas Nelson Publishing

My Thoughts:  As with other books by Max Lucado, this children's book is a powerful rendering of God's truths and is graciously done in a manner that children can enjoy while being educated to the important fact that God Always Keeps His Promises. He always has. He always will.

The book takes stories and events with which children are most likely familiar and retells them in a beautifully scripted text that flows with ease encapsulating the promises of God with you, God helping you, God loving you, etc.

The telling of these stories and the assurance of the faithfulness of God's promise keeping is truly a treasure. Every home with children should have a book like this to instill this truth in the child's heart and mind.

The illustrations are very nicely done. I don't care as much for the "faded" colors on some of them, but they are still quite nice. The book is hardcover and very nicely bound with a ribbon marker affixed to the spine.

I heartily recommend this book.

About the book: Promises from God covers people and promises from the Bible that Max Lucado explores in the adult book. Promises from God weaves the larger narrative of God's Faithfulness. Through the stories of Adam and Eve, Abraham, Joseph, Peter, Paul, and many more, children will learn about the character and nature of God and His unending love for His children. Recommended for ages 4 to 8 years.

Little Book of Thanks by Precious Moments, Jean Fischer from Tommy Nelson an imprint of Thomas Nelson Publishing

My thoughts:  This is one of those special books that get passed down from child to child or generation to generation. Though it will be used a lot by each child or family, it will be carefully used and treasured.

There is such a wealth of thankfulness beautifully expressed in well composed rhymes that lend themselves to memory or recollection. Rhymes that further the love of literature in its beauty. No, these are not classics, but they are worthy of keeping, loving, treasuring.

The illustrations are, as are all Precious Moments drawings, beautifully charming. The sweetness is just so special.

Now about the thanksgiving prayers in this little padded cover board book. They begin with being thankful for the "new day." Then the pages are filled with thanks for others' love, sounds, food, songs, weather, laughter, autumn leaves, etc. I like that things to be thankful are addressed in this delightful book that normally are not mentioned in a young child's book.

I heartily recommend this as a special book to gift to that young child you love. What better time to gift it than as Fall breaks forth and Thanksgiving time nears.

Serve the Lord with joy. Come before him with singing. Psalm 100:2

Thank you, God, for Songs.
Singing
Of speckled eggs the birdie sings
And nests among the trees;
The sailor sings of ropes and things
In ships upon the seas.

The children sing in far Japan;
The children sing in Spain;
The organ with the organman
Is singing in the rain.
—Robert Louis Stevenson

Silly Song
I love to sing a silly song.
I love to sing it all day long.
And if you like my song, feel free
To sing the song along with me!

About the book: It happens every autumn. As soon as the leaves begin to turn bright, beautiful colors, the year sprints ahead on fast-forward! Take a few moments out of the hustle and bustle of the season to sink into a cozy chair with your little one and thank God for everything He’s given us with Precious Moments® Little Book of Thanks.

In the sweet, enduring art style of Precious Moments, this timeless book will help your children recognize all the wonderful things God has given them! Read along, and you will remember to enjoy the simple things, like singing silly songs, jumping in a pile of leaves, and watching the seasons change. The short, rhyming verses in this classic Precious Moments book don’t take much time to read at all, and they will create memories that last forever.

Precious Moments Little Book of Thanks offers you the chance to be thankful for all that you have and for the ones with whom you get to share every precious moment.

Big Trucks: Touch-and-Feel Book (board book) from Thomas Nelson Publishing

My thoughts:  Sometimes it is difficult to get little boys to break away from their stash of toy cars and trucks to sit still for a book. But when the book is all about trucks, moving dirt, touching and feeling then the transition from actively playing to quietly reading begins. Start reading with them when they are small with a board book like Big Trucks: Touch-and-Feel where they can see the big trucks in action on the pages, touch the gritty dirt (no, the grit doesn't come off), feel the rubbery tires, and see a reflection in the "glass" windows.

The story is about the trucks moving dirt and stuff around and the variety of trucks is great. It is also about doing their "work" and working together to get the job done. A great opportunity to begin teaching the concept of work and cooperation.

Thomas Nelson Publishing is a Christian publishing house. While this little book isn't heavily religious, it does end the day with "God bless . . . Good night to each of you." A big "thumbs up" for this book. A delight for boys but definitely suitable for either boys or girls. (After all, in our house, the boys and girls shared ALL the toys.)

About the book: Big Trucks: A Touch-and-Feel Book is a fun way to encourage little children to learn about trucks in a hands-on tactile way. This fun board book includes a different touch-and-feel element on every spread. Children will love feeling the gritty dirt on a construction site and the smooth steel bars the crane lifts. Big Trucks empowers kids to help one another through the story of construction machinery working together to complete a day's work.

Auschwitz Lullaby by Mario Escobar

My thoughts:  I have mixed feelings about this book. In truth, it is a heartrending story of the desperate plight of prisoners in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. And it is told in a manner that lends credence to the veracity of the story and is rife with the desperation of the prisoners. Being based on the life and experience of a real woman, Helene Hannemann, held captive in Auschwitz one tends to accept the story and details as reality. It is, though, a novel. A biographic historical novel based on Helene Hannemann's experiences at Auschwitz.

While I respect the writing and research of the author, Mario Escobar, I found it hard to accept the graces extended to Mrs. Hannemann by the despotic SS officer Dr. Mengele. Experiences recounted heretofore of life in Auschwitz have not attested to any form of grace, even constrained grace. But perhaps there are records or journals that recount such accounts and thus give authenticity to this story.

I still found this book a compelling read. The bravery of Mrs. Hannemann as she stayed with her young family and as she entered the unbearably brutal and filthy confines of Auschwitz is inspiring and touching to one's very innermost soul. Further, her love for others and especially the children of others held in this captivity speaks to a brave, compassionate soul.

I recommend this book to anyone who desires to read about those brutal times in the German concentration camp Auschwitz. I recommend it because it shows the scope of hatred for others different from the pure race that the Nazi's felt themselves to be.

About the book: Auschwitz Lullaby brings to life the story of Helene Hannemann—a woman who sacrificed everything for family and fought furiously for the children she hoped to save.

On an otherwise ordinary morning in 1943, Helene Hannemann is preparing her five children for the day when the German police arrive at her home. Helene’s worst fears come true when the police, under strict orders from the SS, demand that her children and husband, all of Romani heritage, be taken into custody. Though Helene is German and safe from the forces invading her home, she refuses to leave her family—sealing her fate in a way she never could have imagined.

After a terrifying trek across the continent, Helene and her family arrive at Auschwitz and are thrown into the chaos of the camp. Her husband, Johann, is separated from them, but Helene remains fiercely protective of her children and those around her. When the powers-that-be discover that Helene is not only a German but also a trained nurse, she is forced into service at the camp hospital, which is overseen by the notorious Dr. Mengele himself.

Helene is under no illusions in terms of Dr. Mengele’s intentions, but she agrees to cooperate when he asks her to organize a day care and school for the Romani children in the camp. Though physically and emotionally brutalized by the conditions at Auschwitz, Helene musters the strength to protect the children in her care at any cost. Through sheer force of will, Helene provides a haven for the children of Auschwitz—an act of kindness and selflessness so great that it illuminates the darkest night of human history.

Based on a true story, Mario Escobar’s Auschwitz Lullaby demonstrates the power of sacrifice and the strength of human dignity—even when all hope seems lost.

My thoughts:  I am just so happy to hold in my hands this precious book of daily devotions for kids. God's Blessing Day by Day: My Daily Devotional for Kids is beautifully made. The layout is tops with 6 days of one-page devotionals for 52 weeks. Each devotional has a Scripture verse, application, short prayer, and thought to take away. Beautifully drawn illustrations have an especially charming appeal. The birds, critters, stars, flowers and color choices just simply charm one when you enter the pages of this sweet book.

At the back of the book, there is a Scripture index arranged by Book of the Bible and can be especially nice for when you are reading a particular section straight from your Bible and then you can find the devotional that correlates. Just another option for one to use this lovely book. There is also a Table of Contents in the front of the book listing contributors to this volume by writer, their church, and the location of their church.

I Am: The Names of God for Little Ones by Diane Stortz & illustrated by Diane Le Feyer

My thoughts:   This introduction to the depth and expanse of theological meaning that is contained in the seemingly simple words "I Am" as the name of God is interesting presented in this lovely young children's padded board book.

The amount of text, while not overwhelming, is a bit more than is usual for a young child's board book. It is, however, appropriate and entirely workable for their intellect and ability to absorb the intent that the author desires for the young readers to learn more about the very being and character of God.

God our Creator is Elohim and on through to the end where Christ is our King of Kings. As the book takes one from the beginning with Elohim and through the Old Testament with names such as El Shaddai (God All-Powerful) a story/example is given showing how God is All-Powerful, etc. When it transitions to the New Testament, the "El" names change to Son of God, Teacher, Savior, King of Kings.

I think that this is an attractive book and goes beyond the cute board books that pervade the market affording parents and church leaders an opportunity to help young children understand more of who God is and how He is part of their every day existence.

I heartily recommend.

Reviewer's note: Jesus referred to himself as "I AM" several times. "I am the bread of life," "I am the light of the world," "I am the door," "I am the good shepherd" which clearly tells the reader that Jesus is very God.

About the book: God is the Creator, the Healer, our Savior, and our Friend. And it is through God’s names that we understand His character. Now little ones will understand how great our God is by learning His names and all the ways He cares for them.

Show your little one the character of God with I AM: The Names of God for Little Ones. Capturing the names and characteristics of God through short Bible stories, Scripture, and bright illustrations, I AM: The Names of God for Little Ones helps you learn about God in a way that will draw even the youngest child. Children will close the book feeling loved, protected, and secure in the arms of the great I AM.

Written by bestselling author Diane Stortz and illustrated by Diane Le Feyer, I AM: The Names of God for Little Ones is a great companion to the bestselling Bible storybook I AM.

Adventure Bible Book of Daring Deeds and Epic Creations 60 Ultimate Try-Something-New, Explore-the-World Activities by Zonderkidz

ISBN: 9780310763178
Hardcover $12.99
ZonderKidz Publishing
My thoughts:  I know from experience that the summer break from school can lead to long days of, "Mom, I'm bored!" You pack in vacation, camp, swimming at the pool, etc. and still the days need something to fill them up.

And then there are those rainy days (any time during the year) and those too-sick-to-go-to-school but bored with inactivity and you need something to occupy those little ones populating your domain.

Zondervan Publishing has just the item. The Adventure Bible Book of Daring Deeds and Epic Creations has 60 "try-something-new" activities that a variety of kids would totally enjoy doing. And what makes this so extra special is the connectivity to Scripture. Example: On the "finger knitting" activity, the scripture is Psalm 129:13-14 "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together...."

This isn't a true devotional or Bible study book. It is a true activity book but has a bit of God's Grace and His Word sprinkled throughout. A nice way to stay focused on what's important.

Basically, each of the 60 activities has 3 parts. (1) The activity with directions and good, clear pictures of the activity, (2) A "Think About This" that gleans some deeper thinking that could be connected to the activity, and (3) The passage of Scripture that zones in on this particular connection.

Now granted, some of the activities need the guidance and oversight of an adult but this will be based on the age of the child. And some of the activities can be done by young children and some older. The book is designed for the 8 to 12 year old.

I highly recommend this for homes with children. You find days, weeks, well, even years of activities that you can use to fill your children's lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer or those snow-bound days of the winter blahs.

About the book: Begin your adventure here! The Adventure Bible Book of Daring Deeds and Epic Creations: 60 Ultimate Try-Something-New, Explore-the-World Activities contains lessons on knot tying, writing coded letters, building tree swings, and more, perfect for kids ages 8 and up. Boys and girls will love this interactive book filled with step-by-step guides and fun, full-color illustrations, and parents will enjoy the key verses and biblical takeaways that make this the perfect companion to the NIV Adventure Bible, the #1 Bible for kids. From easy, do-it-yourself crafts to fun outdoor activities, this book will show kids how to find adventure indoors and out.

Adventures include:

Top-secret coded letters
Geocaching fun
Identifying animal tracks
Camping like a pro
Learning sign language
Bible arts and crafts
And more!

The Beginner's Bible Bedtime Collection: 20 Favorite Bible Stories and Prayers from Zonderekidz

ISBN: 9780310763284
Hardcover $12.99
My thoughts:  With a slightly softened cover, this perfectly sized collection of Bible stories is written with the 3 to 8 year old child in mind. It is a good cross between a picture book and a chapter book. Complete with a Table of Contents at the beginning, it is separated into Old Testament and New Testament with 20 favorite stories from the Bible.

Written in a flowing story-telling text that briefly tells the story for young listeners and young readers alike is sure to capture their attention with it's cute illustrations.

It features a brief prayer and a Bible verse at the conclusion of each story. Scripture quotes are primarily from the NIrV. I prefer the tried and true KJV yet find this quite acceptable.

I just love the way the New Testament account of Jesus stilling the storm while his disciples were in the boat is written and illustrated in an especially appealing way. And as the old saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words," and these pictures and text tell the value of this Bedtime Collection of Bible Stories from The Beginner's Bible.

I think this little book would be a super addition to a family collection of books for their little ones to grow with.

About the book: The beloved The Beginner’s Bible® brand is the bestselling Bible storybook of our time, with more than 25 million products sold. Really Woolly I Love You, Little One By DaySpring and Bonnie Rickner Jensen Published by Thomas Nelson

My thoughts: This is a sturdy board book with slightly padded cover and sized just right for young (not tiny) hands to carry about. The sweet animals and critters are cute with lovely colors are charming. Each two page spread is a story in verse and an accompanying Bible verse from the International Children's Bible. (Chat With Vera readers know my preference is KJV). There is a short prayer bringing an end to the reading.

The focus of this little book is God's love for "you"! The steadfastness of God's love. This charming little book teaches how God's love is with you all the time - day or night, in fear, in play, in every occasion. This is powerful concept to impart to a child and is written in sweet, heartwarming rhyme that will seat these truths into the heart and mind of a child.

Thomas Nelson Publishers and TommyNelson with DaySpring have produced a very nice little book for little ones. I highly recommend.

About the book: Your children will feel safe and loved.

Easter Love Letters from God Bible Storiews By Glenys Nellist Published by Zondervan

ISBN: 9780310760658
Zonderkidz Pub. - Ages 4-10
Hardcover $16.99
My thoughts: As we enter into the time leading up to the time we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is is appropriate that we focus our minds and direct children's minds to remembrance of this special time.

In Easter Love Letters from God: Bible Stories the author and illustrator have developed an insightful rendering of the week prior to the death and Resurrection of Christ. The seven "stories" are written for the "older picture book reader" as I see the depth beyond that of the small toddler. However, families with younger children can read appropriate sections to these very young so they, too, can begin to appreciate these events.

The "Love Letter from God" has a line for insertion of a child's name. Families with multiple children can also insert more than one name on the line. Don't leave anyone out. And at the end of the book, there is a blank letter that the child can write to God. (Mommies and Daddies, you'll surely want to tuck these special letters away in a safe place to keep as a treasured item.)

Each story has a "lift the flap" Letter from God in which the reader is directed to know God's heart as it relates to the story. Children love hidden messages and lift-the-flap enables a bit of excitement and fun whilst reading.

Each story has a Bible verse associated with it that children might be led to memorize. Associating a memorized scripture verse with a specific story will enable later recall.

Beautifully illustrated, these stories and letters from God will become a treasured book in many homes and hearts. I encourage families to obtain their own copy and get it prior to "Good Friday" if possible.
The Gloomy Garden - Jesus was betrayed and taken by the soldiers

About the book: Jesus came to teach people how to love. He came to heal us from everything that hurts us, and to fill our lives with joy, hope, forgiveness, and peace. And the more you get to know Jesus, the more you’ll discover that this can be your life too.

Easter Love Letters from God, written by Glenys Nellist and illustrated by Sophie Allsopp, guides children and families through Holy Week with seven beautifully illustrated Bible stories. Following each story the child will find his or her own letter from God. Children will love the excitement of opening the letters and parents will love how the letters elaborate on the Bible stories being told. Each message gives the child a sense of wonder as they discover what happened leading up to Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday. A very special Bible verse, entitled God’s Wonderful Words to You will accompany each story and letter. Much more than a memory verse, each carefully chosen promise will be God’s very own personal words of love, encouragement, and hope.

If I Live By Terri Blackstock, New York Times Bestselling Author Published by Zondervan

My thoughts:  An exciting, tense ending to a series that is written in a style that is both engaging and easy to read. While not on a level with the stridently ugly and vicious crime novels that flood the market, this series, and especially book #3 If I Live, is packed with tension, chases, capture, emotion, joy, grief, pain, and love.

Readers will sense the need to continue flipping page after page until they reach the end of this exciting finale.

As private investigator, Dylan, continues to aid Casey as she flees one scene after another because she is being pursued for crimes for which she is not responsible and as Casey faces challenge after challenge they both see God at work in their lives. Leading. Protecting. Comforting. Strengthening.

The revelation of criminal activity and those involved is surprising and reeks of the horror when the public faces criminal entities that work in the background and are not openly identifiable.

A good read and you will root for Casey and Dylan throughout.

About the book: THE HUNT IS ALMOST OVER.

Casey Cox is still on the run after being indicted for murder. The hunt that began with her bloody footprints escalates, and she’s running out of places to hide. Her face is all over the news, and her disguises are no longer enough. It’s only a matter of time before someone recognizes her.

Dylan Roberts, the investigator who once hunted her, is now her only hope. Terrifying attempts on Dylan’s life could force Casey out of hiding. The clock is ticking on both their lives, but exposing the real killers is more complicated than they knew. Amassing the evidence to convict their enemies draws Dylan and Casey together, but their relationship has consequences. Will one life have to be sacrificed to protect the other?

Ten Little Night Stars by Deb Gruelle (published by Zondervan)

My thoughts:  Ten Little Night Stars is designed for the younger child, and the softly padded cover with foil gold stars and sturdy board pages it is sure to be a pleaser. The pictures are cute, colorful, and certainly eye-catching. Each page flip shows a different "critter" and is in a different bedroom. So this isn't about a specific child getting put to bed, but an assortment of little ones in the process of a bedtime routine.

This isn't a sleepy-time read since the little critters are a bit active (i.e., jumping into bed, then in a chair, then out of bed for prayers, then back in bed - but that does mirror the lively lives of toddlers all their waking hours). The flow of getting prepared for bed, slowing down, praying, and then getting in bed is a bit mixed up.

The illustrations are cute and colorful and are perhaps digitally crafted. I do miss the pen or brush to page art creations from an artist's hand. But digital is good, too. One will find the delightful art of Gabi Murphy on a plethora of children's books. Always lovely.

The text is a rhyme of sorts. Little kiddies are not going to really notice when the cadence is off or that the rhyme is stilted, but it never hurts to have a good lively cadence with expected line lengths in the structure. Even though this is a publication from Christian publisher, ZonderKidz, there is little to Christianize it except they say their prayers.

This is an adorably cute little book and will be enjoyed by little ones. The counting aspect is always a winner and little ones love to show off that they know which number comes next in the count.

About the book: Ten Little Night Stars is a sweet bedtime counting book perfect for the youngest readers. One by one the stars come out in the night sky as cute and cuddly animals go through their bedtime routines. This board book will encourage children to turn the page with interactive and engaging rhyme, and will take them through bath time, story time, and sleep. Written by Deb Gruelle, great-great-grand-niece of Johnny Gruelle, the creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy, Ten Little Night Stars is the perfect bedtime story for parents and children alike.

A Place at Our Table by Amy Clipston

My thoughts: I have not previously read a book by Amy Clipston but I have read a couple of her novellas included in collections. I found her writing about the Amish to be a portrayal of a community of people concerned with each others' needs within their families and those within the community. She uses a heavy sprinkling of words and phrases specific to the Amish's use of a form of German usually called Pennsylvania Dutch.

As with other stories of the Amish, we see that the don't drive cars and trucks though they make frequent use of hiring a driver to provide this service for them. They also don't have phones inside their homes but place them in a phone-shanty away from the house. And as with many other stories about these separated communities of believers, they eat a lot and drink a lot of coffee (kaffi)

A Place At Our Table is a gentle story that weaves daily life, emergencies, grief, and tender romance amidst life both suburban and farm. We see people of various talents, personalities, and coping mechanisms as they interact within their tight families and how they branch out to those of like faith to move forward after tragedy.

This is an easy to read story that moves at an unhurried pace. The reader will begin to understand how Amish can even pursue involvement as a fireman providing services to those in the entire community as well as the Amish.

For those who enjoy reading gentle stories involving the Amish and their way of life, you will find this book a light read that will take you into their homes and the seat you at A Place at "their" Table.

About the book: Along with his volunteer work at the local fire department, running his Amish farm keeps Jamie Riehl busy. He barely has time to eat at the family table, never mind find someone to date. But when he meets Kayla Dienner, he is smitten.

Kayla tries hard to deny her attraction to Jamie. After all, she’s spent the last year discouraging her younger brother, Nathan, from becoming a firefighter. The death of their older brother in a fire a year ago is fresh in her mind—she can’t bear the idea of putting her heart on the line every time the sirens blare.

Then tragedy strikes, and Jamie wants to extinguish any flame between him and Kayla. Can Kayla set aside her own fears to save the love she was determined to deny?

The first book in the Amish Homestead series, A Place at Our Table invites us to a quiet community in Lancaster County where love burns brightly no matter the cost.

With Love, From Me to You by Dr. Mary Manz Simon Published by Zondervan

My thoughts: This lovely little board book presents the concept of being loved and showing love in a light-hearted, gentle, sweet, and fun method using the tried and true rhyming text that helps to imprint the ideas and words on the  mind and heart of the young "reader" and listener.

While the "mail-bear" appears to have a mail pouch stuffed with valentines, love is a message that is appropriate anytime and all the time and therefore this book is not just a "Valentine" book. The book's publication launch date was December 26, 2017 which is timely for the upcoming Valentine holiday. But as I said, the message to extend love is appropriate at all times.

Cute, friendly, smiling animals populate this charming book. The little train that traverses the countryside is adorable and just begs to be played with. Alas, it stays ont the pages. The flitting birds, fluffy clouds, and floating dandelion puffs lend airy happiness. But the sharing of love with those around is the  message and it is clearly stated in the text and images. A joyful, delightful book to present to a young child to help them get beyond the "me" stage to the "you" stage.
A red heart sends a message
that says "I so love you,"
but we can send those same words
in what we say and do.
If I see someone crying
or looking very sad,
I'll stop to show some kindness
and he won't feel so bad.

About the book: With Love, From Me to You is a board book for little ones that will remind them how important it is to love and be loved. With adorable illustrations and sweet, rhyming text by bestselling author Dr. Mary Manz Simon, this book shows children how important their actions and words are in expressing God’s great love with one another. Parents will enjoy reading this book on Valentine’s Day or any day of the year to encourage their children to remember that love is more than gifts and candy; it’s about doing for others and sending love to everyone who’s near.

Christmas at Carnton By Tamera Alexander (A Novella Published by Thomas Nelson)

My thoughts:  As with Tamera Alexander's other works, this novella centered amidst the Civil war and involving elaborate preparations for a Christmas auction and festivities was well written with characters that the reader's heart warmed to immediately and a story line that engaged.

Just a bit longer than some novellas, it was a completely satisfying read from start to finish. It shows the reality of those left at home where there is scant to live on and those whose hearts and lives are broken from war. Civilians and soldiers alike.

Carnton is a Southern home or perhaps plantation in Tennessee. The slaves are all gone except for an elderly lady who cooks and charms. This is not a story about why the war was fought or opinions and sides to be taken. It is about people. Good people that are living the best they can on what they can and helping each other at every opportunity.

Christmas at Carnton is a very good read and highly recommended. It is also a prelude to a new series by the author. Based on this novella, the series should be a very good one to read.

NOTE: A plus at the end of the book is a small collection of recipes that were perhaps being served at Carnton by the ladies and the beloved cook.

About the book:
Amid war and the fading dream of the Confederacy, a wounded soldier and a destitute widow discover the true meaning of Christmas—and sacrificial love.

Recently widowed, Aletta Prescott struggles to hold life together for herself and her six-year-old son. With the bank threatening to evict them, she discovers an advertisement for the Women’s Relief Society auction and applies for a position—only to discover it’s been filled. Then a chance meeting with a wounded soldier offers another opportunity—and friendship. But can Aletta trust this man?

Captain Jake Winston, a revered Confederate sharpshooter, suffered a head wound at the Battle of Chickamauga. When doctors deliver their diagnosis, Jake fears losing not only his greatest skill but his very identity. As he heals, Jake is ordered to assist with a local Women’s Relief Society auction. He respectfully objects. Kowtowing to a bunch of “crinolines” isn’t his idea of soldiering. But orders are orders, and he soon discovers this group of ladies—one, in particular—is far more than he bargained for.

Set against the backdrop and history of the Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee, Christmas at Carnton is a story of hope renewed and faith restored at Christmas.

My thoughts:  What a grand opportunity to lead your child to discover the indescribable wonders of the universe made by our wonderful Creator. And this new devotional book for kids will enable families together to embark on this wonderful journey of discovery.

Every day's devotional is packed with wonderful scientific information and a brief scriptural reference that ties it together. The doors for discussion will swing wide open when families use this book for family devotions.

But it is not only a book that can be used in a family setting. Kids themselves will wonder at the awesome God that created our world as they read through these 100 devotions on their own. An opportunity to establish a habit of daily time with God.

Seriously, my husband and I (we're grandparents and great-grandparents) have enjoyed reading some of these devotionals together and are quite frankly simply amazed at the material. It is so well presented and not too "little-kiddie-themed."

I highly recommend this little book and know it will be a treasured addition to a child's or family's library.
