Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump by Carole P. Roman [Review & Giveaway]

Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump

Book #2 in the "Oh Suzannah" series by award winning author, Carole P. Roman continues with charming Suzannah encountering life and its problems as they pertain especially to her. In Book #1, Oh Suzannah: Its in the Bag, young Suzannah learned that you can't simply tuck your problems away and out of sight just because they are difficult.

In Things That Go Bump, Suzannah learns ways to manage her fears. The book is short with 44 pages but fairly complex for a young reader. As Suzannah faces an invitation for a visit for a sleepover at a "scary house" that creaks she learns that noisy houses are just that, noisy houses and not scary things like ghosts.

I do not celebrate Halloween and don't participate in scary stories. This book appears on the cover to be a story involving Halloween with its Jack-o-Lanterns and ghostly faces in the trees and scrubs. It is, however, simply a story about the fears one encounters - fear of catching a runny nose, fear of clowns, fear of creaky old houses. We all have fears at some point in our life and Suzannah learns that she can overcome or manage these fears she encounters.

The portion of Suzannah's story that included an event to which Suzannah's mother took her that was sponsored by her employee and benefited physically challenged children was a highlight. Suzannah had a friend at the event who was visually impaired and the compassion shown and friendship is a true plus for the story.

The colorful cover of Things That Go Bump is charming and you just want to love this sweet little girl and her friends. I would love to have seen the illustrations larger and sprinkled throughout instead of tiny thumbnail images at the beginning of each chapter.

Oh Susannah: Color With Me: An Oh Susannah Coloring Book

Oh Susannah is now a coloring book. Filled with Mateya Arkova's delightful pictures, you can color pivotal scenes in Susannah Maya Logan's life. Join Susannah and her friends and retell Carole P. Roman's charming story through illustrations.

What a fun companion to the two Oh Suzannah books. This little coloring book helps children immerse themselves into the stories by providing pages to color of illustrations featuring the characters and actions from both stories.

  1. (1) How do you help a child overcome fears - even nonsensical fears? We talk about it and take steps that they feel comfortable with to see they are in control.
    2) Were you ever afraid of "things that go bump in the night"? How were you able to overcome that fear? I don't think I was afraid because of a small house I slept with my sister until I was about 9.

  2. I just try to calm my grandchildren by staying calm myself and reassuring them that they are ok. Now, I was always scared at night that somebody was coming in my window. I use to have a recurring dream about this until I was about 30 and then I guess the exhaustion from work and children made me sleep better! Thanks This book sounds like a good one for my grandchildren.

  3. I was never afraid of things that go bump in the night. I was afraid of fire engines.

  4. I just assure him that everything is okay. My son gets scared of a lot of things. I am afraid of worms. I don't know. I think they just creep me out.

  5. I didn't realize Ms. Roman had a new series out! This one looks fun, and I appreciate your reassurance that it's not a Halloween-themed book. We also don't celebrate Halloween. I've always helped my kids deal with their fears by praying with them. Thank you for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com! I appreciate it!

    1. Tina - While this is not a "Halloween" book, there is a bit of halloween stuff in it as the kids are in the middle of the "season" - but not a truly halloween book.

  6. I just reassure them that everything will be fine and we pray. I'm terrified of mice, even dead ones. I still haven't overcome that fear, we live on a farm so that's kind of impossible to avoid them. LOL

  7. We just talk about it, come up with a plan to try, and role-play that plan when appropriate.

  8. I think the best way to help a child overcome a fear is to talk about it. I still sometimes get afraid from things that go bump in the night. I try to think of things that make me happy until the fear passes.

  9. I like the topic of this book, and like how it is a coloring book as well. It's a great way to help children overcome their fears.
