Chomp!: Fierce Facts about the Bite Force, Crushing Jaws, and Mighty Teeth of Earth's Champion Chewers by Brady Barr from National Geographic Kids [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN: 9781426328398
My thoughts:  This is truly an amazing book that is packed with fascinating information that the author, Brady Barr, has gleaned from the four corners of the globe about a huge variety of animals, water life, birds, reptiles, and even insects. The focus is on the bite of each of the creatures and how it enables said creature to survive. How they eat. How they capture their prey.

The book will be quite appealing to young naturalists. I can just see kids sitting (or laying) around engrossed in the pages with these enthralling bits of information and pictures that show just how powerful these creatures' jaws are that CHOMP down on their food or their prey.

As the author describes the jaws and biting ability of these creatures, he educates the reader as to their bone structure and the type, location, and purpose of their teeth.

Some of the antics Dr. Barr got himself into were quite challenging and even sometimes funny as he tried to measure the Bite Strength of a variety of the creatures. The animals are large, fierce, and quite protective of their territory and don't like to be disturbed by a mere man.

National Geographic Kids has hit a homerun with this book and it should find a home in libraries and personal collections.

About the book: National Geographic Explorer and snake wrangler Dr. Brady Barr has been bitten by a lot of creatures over the years. So this book is born from first hand er, tooth experience of getting close to some of the biggest biters in the animal kingdom.

It turns out that there's a lot more to biting than meets the eye. Physical features and the how (and when and why) an animal bites reveals much about the animal itself. Chomp! highlights an array of awesome creatures with a diversity of chomp styles from shredders and slicers to grippers and gulpers. Then it shows how tooth type, bite force, jaw shape, and food source all come to together to make each an incredible member of the animal bite force!"

  7. My girls love the Nat Geo Books- thanks for sharing about this one.

  8. Alligators and Crocodiles scare me! They can swim up silently, leap out, and grab you or your dog and be gone in a blink of an eye.

  9. I am afraid of a lot of animals with chompers so picking a top two is really challenging! Lions, sharks, and alligators/crocodiles are all up there but so are snakes and other wildcats and even dogs and wolves! Pretty much anything that bites can just stay far away from me, please! :) Thank you for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday on! I appreciate it!

  10. Most fearsome chompers: 1. spiders 2. sharks
