The Good Farmer and the Worried Donkey by Hannah E. Harrison & published by ZonderKidz

ISBN: 9780310163992 ~ Hardcover $19.99 USD ~ ZonderKidz ~ Ages 4+

My thoughts:  I thought The Good Shepherd and the Stubborn Sheep was good, but The  Good Farmer and the Worried Donkey is exceptionally good. A sweet story about a kind farmer who rescues a little donkey from a harsh taskmaster is beautifully illustrated in gentle story-telling art that is a comfort to view. The story is sweet and the Biblical application is superb!

Parents can gently teach their young children about the perils of a life of sin (a wicked taskmaster) and the redemptive deeds of a loving God (pictured as the Good Farmer). They can see the care and love that the farmer pours into this little donkey. They can see how the patience, care, understanding, and unburdening actions of the loving farmer are a nice picture of our loving God.

I highly recommend this sweet book. Perhaps you'll enjoy both of these books for your child's library. Also, if you loved The Good Shepherd and the Stubborn Sheep, you'll love this new one about the Worried Donkey, too!

Purchase Your Copy ➡️CLICK HERE

About the book: The Good Farmer and the Worried Donkey is an honest and heartwarming picture book that reminds us that we are not alone and God is our strength. This story beautifully captures the essence of Matthew 11 (“his yoke is easy and his burden is light”) and the parable of the sower.

Charlie is a small donkey who works for the miller, but he’s not the strongest and he sometimes makes the miller mad. When a farmer comes and takes Charlie to a beautiful farm, Charlie worries that if he disappoints the farmer, the farmer will no longer want him. But Charlie is in for a surprise, because his farmer is a Good Farmer who is patient, wise, understanding, and strong. Through both touching and humorous moments, Charlie learns about his special place on the farm and why he can trust the Good Farmer with his worries.

The Bible is full of references to seeds, wheat, and farming, but what do those stories tell us about the attributes of God? Or how can we learn to rely on God? In a time when anxiety rates among children are on the rise, The Good Farmer and the Worried Donkey uses a relatable character and a riveting story to bring biblical truth to life for kids and illustrate how we can cast our cares on God.

From Hannah Harrison, the author and illustrator of the Christlit Book Award-winning and ECPA best-selling The Good Shepherd and the Stubborn Sheep, The Good Farmer and the Worried Donkey is perfect for:
  • children ages 4 and up
  • family devotions and bedtime reading
  • discussions about what it means to have a burden and a yoke, the meaning of the parable of the sower, and the importance of casting your cares on God
  • Sunday school lessons and church libraries
  • fall and harvest celebrations and gift-giving occasions
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Hannah E. Harrison is the author and illustrator of seven picture books, including The Good Shepherd and the Stubborn Sheep, a 2025 Christlit Book Award-winner, The Gospel Coalition Children’s Book Award-winner, and Christianity Today’s picture book of the year; Extraordinary Jane, named a Kirkus Best Animal Book of the year; Bear Is Awake!, an Amazon Editors’ Pick; My Friend Maggie, winner of the Bill Martin Jr. Award; and Poopsie Gets Lost, which earned the Redbud Read-Aloud Award. The Amazing Brain Club: God's Special Design For All Brains (Ages 4-8, ZonderKidz Publishing)

ISBN: 9780310178750
Hardcover $17.99 USD
ZonderKidz Publishing - Purchase Here

My thoughts:
This delightfully illustrated children's book about differences in brains and how they function is a positive presentation on acceptance of being neurodiverse in an neuro-ordinary designed world. It seems to me as I read through the text that the focus is primarily on ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) which by definition is short attention span and being hyper active in conduct and performance. This typically creates disorder in the home, classroom, and business scene (once a person is grown). The storyline of The Amazing Brain Club brings acceptance, positivity, and inclusivity to those who have the neurodiverse brain that is ADHD.

Often a person whose brain is different from the ordinary has extraordinary and wonderful talents and attributes. Their minds explore more, are quick to encapsulate ideas into theories and designs, and are able to contribute greatly to our world and society. The key is learning how to function within the scope of society and the design of one's brain differences.

However, acceptance is very much a key to this ability to be a creative, contributing individual instead of a disruptive, confused individual. The "Brain Club" idea is tremendous and grants a wonder and winning quality to being neurodiverse in a neuro-ordinary world.

A good book and written to appeal to ages 4 to 8.

About the book:  Is your child a whirlwind of creativity, bursting with ideas and energy? Do they sometimes struggle in a world that doesn't quite understand their unique brilliance or neurodiversity? The Amazing Brain Club is a picture book to help kids with ADHD discover that their "different" brain isn't a problem—it's a God-given gift—and to help those who interact with them understand how all brains are uniquely made.

This heartwarming picture book from author and educator Lindsey Goff Viducich (Love Does for Kids), celebrates the incredible gifts and talents of children with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), reminding them that they are intentionally and wonderfully made by God—and that all different kinds of minds belong in the Amazing Brain Club! Inside, you’ll discover:
  • Your ADHD Brain Is a Gift: Explore how your child's unique brain wiring and mindset makes them capable of amazing things, from imaginative thinking to creative problem-solving. This book helps them see their differences as strengths.
  • God's Perfect Plan for You: Find out how God lovingly created your child exactly as they are, ADHD and all. This book reinforces the message that they are deeply loved and cherished by God.
  • How to Navigate the Ups and Downs: Learn practical ways to manage the challenges of ADHD and celebrate the joys, empowering your child to thrive in their daily life.

Perfect for neurodiverse families and classrooms, The Amazing Brain Club isn't just for kids with ADHD—it's for everyone! This book helps neurotypical children understand and appreciate the unique perspectives of their siblings, classmates, and friends, fostering empathy and inclusion. It's a beautiful reminder that we all belong in God's family.

Inside The Amazing Brain Club, your child will discover:
  • Engaging illustrations that bring the message to life
  • A positive and empowering perspective on ADHD
  • Biblical truths about the way all brains are designed and how they perfectly fit into God's family
  • Text that speaks to children’s feelings and experiences

Focusing on a reverent observance of Easter and providing children with appropriate books

Observing Resurrection Sunday is an exercise in Spiritual maturity and development. It brings the soul to the root of our Salvation.

Gift spiritually enriching books to children. Direct their hearts and minds to the things of God.

Jesus, Our True Friend

Jesus, Our True Friend is a beautiful collection of seven stories from Jesus’ life that share the good news—that our Rescuer has come to mend God’s broken world, bring us back to God, and show us what Love is really like. From Sally Lloyd-Jones and Jago, the creators of the beloved and bestselling The Jesus Storybook Bible, these stories will fill your heart with joy as you come to understand just how deep God’s love is for you.

My thoughts: Beautifully written to bring beloved Saviour, Jesus, to young hearts, Jesus, Our True Friend is a welcome addition to children's book collections, church libraries, and libraries that care to include Christian publications. It makes an exceptional gift that will bring delight and help establish the child's concept of Jesus.

In chapter book form with a "Table of Contents," the book lends itself well to read-aloud sessions. There is more "story" and details than the very youngest child will understand, grasp meaning of, or sit for. However, it lends itself well for those who have learned to read or for wonderful family read-aloud time.

The text (in my opinion) simply flows beautifully as the stories of Jesus are recounted. They seem to caress one's heart with their beauty. And adults will have glimpses into deeper truths that simple words can convey. For example in "The Two Sisters," Jesus tells Martha that "the thing you are carrying is too heavy for you." She was just doing meal preparation, etc. What was too heavy? No, Jesus was actually telling her that the "works" mentality was too heavy. She needed the time with Jesus just like Mary did. Purchase  https://amzn.to/46jMIqg

So I highly endorse this beautiful book

Jesus, Our True Friend: Stories to Fill Your Heart With Joy by Sally Lloyd-Jones

Jesus, Our True Friend tells the stories of Jesus’ life in beautiful, lyrical prose—and captures their deep theological truth in words even a child can understand. This seven-story collection includes miracles from Jesus’ life like the Wedding at Cana and the Miraculous Catch of Fish, parables Jesus told like the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, and people Jesus met like Mary and Martha. These stories showcase Jesus’ great love and deep empathy for the lost, the outcast, the suffering, as well as for his friends and his followers. And for us, too.

"The Glorious Image of God: How Jesus Reveals Who God Made You to Be" by Rousseaux Brasseur & illustrated by Arief Putra

My thoughts: The concept of teaching children that they are made in the image of their creator, God, is terrifyingly deep and complex. The author has attempted to do this starting with having the child view their own image in a mirror and then reflecting on the simple fact that what they see is a copy or image of themselves. This is then somehow translated to our being a copy or image of God similar to the reflected image in the mirror.

Then the author goes on to tell the Biblical account of creation of man by God, the fall of man (sin entering the world), the worship of manmade images or gods, and finally, the coming of the Son of God as redeemer and saviour. All a very expansive and complex explanation to a child of his being created or made in the image of God.

The children depicted in the illustrations are cute and bright-eyed and other illustrations reflective of the storyline. The story itself is told in a loosely written rhyming method that is somewhat hard to read since the meter is not consistent.

Theologically, the book is sound.

About the book: Being made in God’s image can be a hard concept for children to fully grasp, but The Glorious Image of God explains how, through the story of Jesus, we can learn to see God’s reflection within ourselves and foster a deeper sense of spiritual identity and self-worth. From ministry leader and children’s book author Rousseaux Brasseur, this masterfully woven, rhyming text dives into stories from the Bible unpacking what it means to be an image bearer of God, helping us to better understand how we can share God’s love and goodness with others in our lives.

Every human being is a wonderful work of art, made in God’s image and capable of reflecting God’s goodness and light to others. The Glorious Image of God is a fun exploration of the story of how God wove his likeness into us humans, where our purpose comes from, and how Jesus reflects who God made you to be. This picture book for kids 4 and up is designed to help grow children’s foundation of faith, guiding them to understand how they reflect the image of God and how God delights when his children fill the world with his love.

The Glorious Image of God:
  • Is an ideal addition to any child’s bookshelf or children’s ministry library, unpacking biblical truths in a theologically sound manner to bring increased understanding for children 4 and up
  • Full of colorful, bright illustrations that engage children and help them imagine Bible stories as well as modern day scenes where they can reflect God’s image.
  • Perfect for reading together at bedtime, in Sunday school, in Christian classrooms, or any favorite read-aloud times.
  • A great gift for Christmas, Easter, and any gift-giving occasion or holiday.
Help your little ones understand the profound concept of being made in God’s image. Through Jesus, they will learn to see God’s reflection within themselves, fostering a deeper sense of spiritual identity, self-worth, and connection to Jesus.

Deep Breath, Little Whisper by Scott James & illustrated by Irina Avgustinovich

https://amzn.to/46jMIqg

My thoughts:
A lovely picture book that teaches that prayer can be a breath, a whisper, a shout out or a cry. The emphasis is on pausing and taking a deep breath when confronted with various times of life that we need the love of God to reach down to us and help us.

Beautifully written and delightful illustrations.

Lovely!

About the book: Help your child discover the importance of talking to God during all types of situations with this picture book that explores the use of breath prayers. Throughout, kids will learn that each of their direct praises, quick thanks, and whispered requests can bring them peace and build a stronger relationship with their heavenly Father.

God loves it when His children talk to Him—and connecting with God can be as easy as using a simple word or phrase. Deep Breath, Little Whisper introduces the idea of breath prayers by using a series of kid-friendly scenarios and engaging text to show young readers how they can have a conversation with God in the moment, wherever they are and however they’re feeling. Each example also helps remind them that prayer doesn’t have to be big and complex to be meaningful—it just has to come from the heart.

The illustrated book is perfect for:
  • read-aloud or prayer time
  • introducing breath prayers into your family
  • helping children from preschool to early elementary develop a relationship with God through easy-to-remember prayers and prompts
  • teaching different types of prayers, including praise and adoration, thanksgiving, intercessory, and confession
  • showing kids how they can calm their minds and turn to God no matter what happens

My thoughts: Bible story books are such a wonderful tool to have on hand to introduce the young child to the Bible and the bare-bones of the Word of God. You can choose to have one or you can choose to have a variety so that your child can experience the many "tellings" and "illustrative styles" of authors and artists as they bring to life what God reveals to mankind in his Word.

Now a Bible storybook is not, nor should be considered to be, the actual Word of God. It is an introduction to and base of study for beginners. Hence the writers, illustrators, and publishers have labored diligently to bring to your home a book worthy of it's title - The Beginner's Bible: Timeless Children's Stories from ZonderKidz, an imprint of Zondervan.

Using vibrant artwork from The Beginner's Bible, children will learn key events leading up to Jesus' death and resurrection, such as the Triumphal Entry, the Last Supper, Jesus' arrest, and his death and resurrection, as well as a page on Jesus' return someday. By the end of the story, children will understand the wonderful gift of salvation and why we celebrate this special day. Recommended for ages 2 to 5.

New books in The Mystery of the Ancient Map series: "The Brave Queen" & "The Big Fish" [Review & Giveway]

Children’s chapter books that celebrate faith, bravery, and biblical truth in an engaging, family-friendly way:

The Brave Queen and The Big Fish

Personally, I am not fond of retelling of Biblical stories especially with insertion of modern life characters into the story. That being said, I realize that sometimes for children reading these "we were there" type stories do tend to hold their interest. It is the responsibility of parents to clarify any errors in interpretation for their children.

I listened to the available preview of the audio version of The Brave Queen and found it an exceptionally well done audio. Plus the story would surely capture the imagination of young listeners. The print copies of this "Mystery of the Ancient Map" series for The Brave Queen and The Big Fish are just the right length for early chapter book readers. I love the large print and the abundance of illustrations. These are NOT a picture books. They are early chapter books for the established reader.

Of note in The Brave Queen, at the end of the book young Peter encounters the "Captain" who challenges Peter. Peter "sees" that it is Satan and calls the Captain "Satan." This is a bit mature for this age reader and I don't see the wisdom of its inclusion in the story. Another character insertion that is worthy of note is Michael, the archangel. Children need to learn the role of Angels in God's plan for our lives and how they watch over and protect us. In these books, Michael actually appears to them with wings and a sword.

I see both of these books as fun reads for early readers and they will surely promote interest in the Bible and events and people of the Bible. Both stories are from the Old Testament. The Brave Queen is from the story of Esther in the Bible; and in The Big Fish, the story of Jonah being swallowed by the fish. Both stories are opportunities to learn of God's plan and protection for us.

I recommend these for families with early chapter book readers (younger read-aloud-to-me listeners, too) but with parental caution to use guidance on some aspects of the stories.

The Brave Queen: Book 1

The Brave Queen is the first book in the new Mystery of the Ancient Map series that expands the world of The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls, but it can be thoroughly enjoyed by readers not familiar with Peter, Mary, and Hank’s previous adventures.

Peter and Mary are getting ready for a new school year after a summer of time travelling with Great Uncle Solomon’s hidden scrolls, but life seems very boring after all their adventures. Then they get an invitation to go to Israel where Great Uncle Solomon is getting a Lifetime Achievement Award in Archaeology. During Great Uncle Solomon’s acceptance speech, a mysterious woman slips Peter an ancient map with red Xs marking different locations. When they investigate the map, the kids discover a new hidden scroll that takes them to Persia, back to the time of Queen Esther, where they meet Mordecai, the evil Haman, and Queen Esther, and try to solve the secret of the scroll.

The Big Fish: Book 2

The Big Fish is the second book in the new Mystery of the Ancient Map series that expands the world of The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls, but it can be thoroughly enjoyed by readers not familiar with Peter, Mary, and Hank’s previous adventures.

Great Uncle Solomon takes Peter, Mary, and Hank on a train trip to investigate a new red X on their ancient map. It leads them to the sea, where they discover a new hidden scroll that takes them back in time, and they stowaway on a ship. When a huge storm comes up, they meet Jonah and end up being swallowed with him by a giant fish! It’s an adventure unlike any other as they journey to Nineveh, encounter the Enemy, and try to solve the secret of the scroll. 🌈

ISBN: 9780310708254
Hardcover | $24.99 US/ $31.00 CAD

My thoughts:  Sally Lloyd Jones does such a good job presenting to children the stories from throughout the Bible. In The Jesus Storybook Bible she retells the well known stories from the Bible and how Jesus is in - even though in shadow - each of them. Sized for young hands, this thick book has pictures to interest and understandable text that can be read to the young child. As the child grows and learns to read, he or she will begin to read these simply retold stories for themselves.

Originally published in 2007, it's many editions attest to the dependability and trustworthiness of the storybook. This is a storybook and not intended to replace a Bible. There is no chapter/verse text. This is a retelling of the stories that are in the Biblical text. (Note: For reference the Book/Chapter/Verse are provided.)

The Wonders of the First Christmas: Explore the Birth of Jesus through History, Archaeology, & Art by Andy McGuire (Zonderkidz)

ISBN: 9780310170211
Hardcover | $18.99

My thoughts:  Small children live in the moment. Their ability to comprehend or independently visualize history or how people lived differently from their own way of living has to be gently and gradually taught. They "see" dinosaurs as frightful animals that should growl, prowl, and devour. But in actuality they see a simply an  animal not much different from animals in their own time-line than that of the neighbor's dog that barks, growls, runs, and jumps. They are "in the now" mentally and physically.

Therefore, instilling a comprehension of the Christ Child being born in a barn, placed in a manger, and being pursued by an evil king or other archeological, governmental, and societal life different from that in which he, himself, actual lives, is nil. So a book such as The Wonders of the First Christmas: Explore the Birth of Jesus through History, Archaeology and Art that tells the Bibilical account of the birth of Jesus in storybook form is typical. The inclusion of history lesson tidbits running parallel on the book's pages provides opportunity for parents to introduce elements of history and life during those ancient times to the young child. A wonderful concept and a helpful tool for parents to have at hand.

Beautifully told, the story of the birth of the Son of God adheres well to Scripture account. The illustrations are large, beautifully colored, and clearly drawn to visually articulate each scene. Detail and softness are both achieved in the art. The struggle of Joseph and the donkey on the journey are easy to comprehend. A snippet of Roman history. A snippet of the usefulness of donkeys during that period of history. Snippets about the life of the shepherds in the fields and the type of sheep they tended. The illustrations really capture the birth of Christ, the surroundings, the way of life, and His early journey to the safety of Egypt.

I highly recommend this unusual "Christmas story" book for its beauty, unusual information about the times, and its accurate retelling of the birth of the Christ Child.

About the book: Experience the Christmas story and witness the goodness of God. Through historical details and Biblical truths, The Wonders of the First Christmas is an inspirational and educational picture book that tells the story of Jesus’s birth from a new perspective, helping families deepen their understanding of God and his word.

The Christmas story is so familiar that we often take the details for granted. But did Mary and Joseph really ride on a donkey to Bethlehem? What was a manger and why did they use one for Jesus’s bed? And where were the wise men actually from? By approaching the story with historical insight and a child’s sense of wonder, Andy McGuire crafts a tale that feels fresh and insightful, using well-researched material and beautiful original artwork.

The Wonders of the First Christmas:

  • Combines the gospel text of the nativity story with historical, biological, and geographic facts about ancient Israel and the life and times of Jesus.
  • Gives children a solid foundation for their faith with beautiful art and additional content.
  • Is the perfect Advent or Christmas book to share with children ages 4 and up
  • Includes an easy-to-read main story as well as callouts with easy-to-understand facts
  • Emphasizes God’s love for his children and his plan for our salvation.
