My thoughts:  Usually students don't begin their journey into the works of William Shakespeare until their high school years. Occasionally a little before. So the entrance into children's genre of picture books - especially pop-up books - is quite different.

True the young readers (middle elementary upwards) won't grasp the nuances of the works until they are older, but much can be gleaned from his writings and that gleaning can plant seeds to further explore and comprehend these literary gems as they mature in their reading.

Uniquely designed with front and back sided pop up the author and designer are able to include the complete works - yes, complete works. But before the actual parade of Reduced Shakespeare Company's works enters the stage, there are nuggets of information about William Shakespeare's earlier life, his family, his home. All this is told with a bit of "tongue in cheek" fun. So it is great fun to learn with these short bits of information about each play and work and it is done in such an eye-catching enjoyable way. This concise presentation is great for those beginning to learn about these classics or for a bit of memory refreshing for those beyond childhood.

Readers should keep in mind that this is a condensed or "high spot" book that will appeal to children up to about age 12. It is not meant for those who wish to savor the minute nuggets of Shakespearean wit and skill. This is a fun and entertaining way to introduce the children to the vast assortment of plays and works by Shakespeare and even perhaps begin to learn a bit of the history of the period during which they were written.

This fun book will be perfect preparation for Talk Like Shakespeare Day  on April 23.

Histories Plays are shown on this 2-page spread and the flip side of the page shows more.
Almost every spotlight of information is a lift-the-flap treasure!
