Feeding Minds Press presents Potatoes for Pirate Pearl by Jennifer Concepcion and illustrated by Chloe Burgett

ISBN: 978-1-948-89815-7
Hardcover $18.99
Ages 4-8 | 40 pages
My thoughts: This is a delightful book that children will like. I have grown quite fond of the books from Feeding Minds Press and love how they entertain and educate children with quality text and really cute illustrations.

Learning about the process of growing potatoes is presented in an entertaining mode in Potatoes for Pirate Pearl (notice the alliteration!). Truly a fun "pirate" story with lots of pirate-ty vocabulary and an adorable parrot, with more cute alliteration, a very hungry pirate who discovers Farmer Fay's potato farm, and back pages that have information and recipes for potato delights.

About the book: An engaging picture book that takes children on a voyage filled with friendship and farming.

Celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day with Pirate Pearl and her parrot, Petunia, as they grow tired of their hardtack biscuits and abandon ship in search of new vittles. Their treasure map leads them to an unlikely place: Farmer Fay’s potato farm. Farmer Fay shares her grub and her knowledge with Pearl, teaching the pirate everything she needs to know about growing and caring for a potato harvest. The unlikely friendship between the landlubber and the seafarer teaches children that friends are even more valuable than treasure.

Just like potatoes are packed with nutrients every pirate needs, Potatoes for Pirate Pearl is full of potato facts to help farmers and pirates alike plant, harvest, and cook their tasty vittles. The back matter includes instructions for readers to grow their own potatoes, as well as recipes they can try at home.

About the Author: Jennifer Concepcion was born in Haiti, raised in northern British Columbia and now lives in Costa Rica with her three children. She holds a Bachelor's degree in International Studies, and a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education. Jennifer teaches bilingual Kindergarten and writes for kids of all ages. In her spare time she can be found building pirate forts at the beach or hammock-swinging under the mango tree, lost in a good book. Learn more about Jennifer at
