Sister Dear by Laura McNeill [Giveaway]

About the book: All Allie Marshall wants is a fresh start. But when dark secrets refuse to stay buried, will her chance at a new life be shattered forever?

Convicted of a crime she didn't commit, Allie watched a decade of her life vanish---time that can never be recovered. Now, out on parole, Allie is determined to clear her name, rebuild her life, and reconnect with the daughter she barely knows.

But Allie's return home shatters the quaint, coastal community of Brunswick, Georgia. Even her own daughter Caroline, now a teenager, bristles at Allie's claims of innocence. Refusing defeat, a stronger, smarter Allie launches a battle for the truth, digging deeply into the past even if it threatens her parole status, personal safety, and the already fragile bond with family.

As her commitment to finding the truth intensifies, what Allie ultimately uncovers is far worse than she imagined. Her own sister has been hiding a dark secret---one that holds the key to Allie's freedom.

  1. (First, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct place. This is a comment in response to the prompt, "Leave a blog comment about... dealing with deception. If you have experience dealing with deception, share how you dealt with it.")
...Wow. I have A LOT of experience with deception-- chiefly, with being outright lied to. I've also been left in the dark about MAJOR things. It would be almost impossible to touch even vaguely upon what I'm referring to, because these things are so huge and possibly-identifiable. But... yes. With a former significant other, I was lied to time and time again-- about names, family members, marital status, everything. Within my own family, I've been left in the dark about VERY significant events, and even the existence of certain people. I've dealt with these things by... Well, I'm not sure. I get very angry when I've been expected to keep these secrets within me, and to continue with the lies. Also, I imagine that some part of me wants to hold these lies as a sort of ammo: that some day, I will use it against the person who deceived me.
This may or may not make sense. For one thing, I can only see four lines of text as I'm typing. :p But, yes. Deception hurts. I believe it's Mark Twain who is attributed with having [first] said "Always tell the truth, and you never have to remember anything."

  3. I've had to deal with some deception in my life. I got through it by moving on, forgiving, and trying not to dwell on it.

  5. I tend to keep people at arms length... Deception is so subtle and hard to deal with.
