HOW MUCH WATER DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE……?

What do the clothes on your back, the food on your plate, the transportation you take, and the paper in your notebook all have in common? For starters, they all require water to create! It’s easy to understand just how valuable water is when you’re really thirsty and you chug down a cool, refreshing glass of it. But we need water for way more than just drinking. You might be surprised by just how much water is used in almost every product and process we encounter in our day-today lives. Everything we eat, everything we buy, everything we wear— water is used in some way to make it all. And some things use a lot of water. How much water something uses is called its “water footprint.” And everything and everyone has one. Take, for example, a cheese pizza. To make the mozzarella cheese for one pizza, it takes about 165 gallons of water. To make the wheat flour for the crust requires about 145 gallons of water. The tomato sauce? About 20 gallons of water. Adding all its components together, one cheese pizza has a water footprint of about 330 of water. By not wasting food, buying secondhand clothes and toys, and reusing old items, you’re not only conserving the specific materials that make up those items—like grain, cotton, plastic, and wood — you’re also saving water!
