Life in Christ Bible: Discovering, Believing, & Rejoicing in Who God Says You Are (NKJV) [Review & Giveaway]

As many of my readers already know, my preferred version of the Bible, God's Word, is the traditional KJV (King James Version). I grew up using this Bible and have used it my entire life. It seems to have fallen out of favor in today's world with the option to use a plethora of translations or versions. The closest, to my knowledge, is the NKJV (New King James Version). The NKJV is the one used in this Life in Christ Bible

A Bible, without any notes or additives, is God's Word. Notes, commentaries, explanations tucked within the pages of a Bible are there for study, understanding, and application to one's personal life what God is saying to you, and mankind, in His Word. The added notes and commentaries are not God's Word and in any Bible should be considered separately. They are intended as aides.

About The Life in Christ Bible: God has a purpose for your life in this moment. You have a part to play in what He is doing in the world. But knowing why you are here starts with knowing who God says you are. The Life in Christ Bible invites you to embrace your identity and purpose as you:

  • Discover why you matter-not because of anything you do, but because you are made in the image of God.
  • Explore how the gospel of Jesus Christ makes you a new person.
  • Learn how who God says you are changes how you think, speak, work, and move through the world.

My review: The main focus on this  printing of the Bible is an encouragement of study that reveals the good news in the Bible that we are all  "made in the image of God and conformed to the image of Christ (Genesis 1:27; Romans 8:29)." The Life in Christ Bible aids in learning just what it means to bear the image of God and find our identity in Christ.

This Bible is a lovely, well constructed printing of the New King James Version. Bound meticulously for strength and beauty and covered with a soft brown leatherette (artificial leather) cover that is flexible, easy to hold, and lays flat. This one will give years of service as you study God's Word.

As I've said previously, my personal preference in versions is the tradition, time-tested King James Version. The NKJV is close and yields a more modern language which some prefer. I also prefer the verse by verse style, but the Life In Christ Bible NKJV is printed in single column paragraph format with individual verses identified with tiny numbering.

As with any good study Bible, this one has cross references and notes throughout. Also included, are many short articles focusing on subjects dealing with our identity in Christ. Lovely maps are included as are many other really nice aids to guided study and understanding.

Veil of Destruction (Kessler Effect #3) by Vannetta Chapman [Giveaway & ReviewMy

My thoughts:  While reading Veil of Destruction, I found the possibilities of life and civilization post-massive world wide destruction fleshed out in stark reality that causes me to pause and pray that this does not befall mankind.

Often dystopian or post-apocalyptic stories involve horrific natural disasters - earthquakes, floods, fires, meteors colliding with Earth. In this series the disaster that has shut down the world as people know it was due to the Kessler Effect - a complete shutdown of the Earth's satellites and subsequent electric grid closing and technology use ending. This means no water, no electricity, no sanitation facilities, no heat, no food production. It means chaos and discord.

In VEIL OF DESTRUCTION a group of 3 from the small University town of Alpine strike out through the barrenness that is Texas to find family that was in the big city of Dallas. They cautiously skirt any area that might have marauding gangs and areas of violence.

The pace of the storyline is steady as is the group's progress through the barrenness. They do encounter goodwill and help but they also find meanness and greed.

Their final encounter almost costs them dearly.

What I'm looking forward to in the next book in the series, Veil of Stillness..... The old man Joshua - who is he and his story ... The settling into life with daily hardships.... The possibility of overcoming the loss of societies' amenities lost in the June 6 event.

As usual, the author tells a good story that is clean, decent, and pleasant reading.

About the book: How far would you go to save your brother?

It’s been six months since all of the lower orbital satellites crashed to Earth. Akule Lopez has waited through every one of those days...waited to see her brother arrive home in Alpine.

Now she’s done waiting. Winter has fallen across the desolate Texas landscape. Rumors of war and insurrection abound. Akule doesn’t know how she’ll get from Alpine to Dallas. She doesn’t even know that her brother is still there. But she does know that she’s going to find out.

Her father doesn’t want her to go, but Akule isn’t a child anymore. She doesn’t need her father’s permission. She also understands that if she goes, if she dies in the attempt, then her father will have lost both of his children. She won’t let that happen. If it’s the last thing she ever does, she will find Paco and bring him home.

What sacrifice is too big, when it seems your life has been draped in a Veil of Destruction?

From USA Today Bestselling author Vannetta Chapman comes a survival series unlike any other.

Veil of Destruction is book three in a new post-apocalyptic survival thriller series from USA Today Bestselling Author Vannetta Chapman. An exciting contribution to the genre of disaster fiction, this is a series that will keep you reading late into the night.

Morgannas Alchemy 24 Carrot Glow Encapsulated Astaxanthin + Bakuchiol Moisturizer

24 Carrot Glow Encapsulated Astaxanthin + Bakuchiol Moisturizer

$50.00 ~ 24 Carrot Glow Moisturizer

My thoughts: This is a lovely product that goes on smoothly and doesn't leave my skin feeling tacky. The orange coloration of the cream actually leaves a slight residue of tone to the skin (appreciated on my very fair skin) that renders a glowing healthy look.  This is not a tint or makeup product, but a skincare product that leaves a slight tone and a glow to the face. Makeup went on beautifully over the 24 Carrot Glow Moisturizer. (I use a fairly high end brand liquid foundation)  I am very pleased with this Morganna product.

The orangish color melts into the skin
and a slight tinted glow remains.

About the product: Balances oil production, fades dark spots, and protects against pollution and sun damage.

Our 24 Carrot Glow Super Cream is great for even most sensitive skin types, will help with dullness, its orange color will make skin glow.

The red-orange color of its texture indicates the presence of a powerful active ingredient: astaxanthin.  A powerful antioxidant, more potent and stable than Vitamins C or E Obtained from a Red algae (haematococcus pluvialis), this active ingredient is known to be the most effective free radical scavenger.

Astaxanthin helps skin with premature aging, and formation of wrinkles, reduces UV-induced damage and improves the regenerative capacity of the skin.
This natural complex (astaxanthin with ß-carotene, lutein, canthaxanthin, …) of components contained in algal biomass creating a synergistic effect which involves high bioavailability

Astaxanthin aids skin from the free radical damage that accelerates skin aging. It counteracts UV damage and improves elasticity via improved skin function. It promotes collagen production. (more details)

Clouds In Space: Nebulae, Stardust, and Us by Teresa Robeson & illustrated by Diana Renzina (MIT Kids Press)

Clouds in Space: Nebulae, Stardust, and Us by Teresa Robeson & illustrated by Diana Renzina

My thoughts:
I usually love the MIT Kids Press books and am amazed at how they present real information that is complex and break it down in kid sized bites. In Clouds In Space the author uses fictionalization to explain outer space and the massive elements that are the make up of the universe - Nebulae.

The concept of clouds is used to describe nebulae and that is given in comparison to Earth's clouds. Now factor in the personification of nebulae and you have the stuff of fantasy. Personally, I'd  rather not have had nebulae-persons floating around in space with kids in space suits.

The illustrations are great! I love the way descriptions of "a kaleidoscope, a riot of rainbows, atoms aglow with starlight" as well as the art reflect beautifully on the images telescopes have given us of these elements of the universe.

The back pages information is very good and describes the discovery of nebulae as well as the different types. I love the photographs and descriptions of the nebulae that make "appearances" in this book.

A good book, but not a favorite of mine.

About the book: Real space science meets beautiful images in this lyrical nonfiction introduction to one of the most alluring wonders of our universe—the nebula.

Nebula means “cloud” in Latin, but these little-known astronomical phenomena are different from Earth’s clouds. They can be the last breaths of supernovas, spreading the elements of life far and wide, or they can be star nurseries, swirling molecules together to form stars and planets. In this gorgeous nonfiction look into the cosmos, the nebula narrator invites young astronomers to learn more about these immense space clouds, from how they form to what they do. Readers will be entranced by the vibrant illustrations, which incorporate real photographs of nebulae, and the poetic text, which reveals that we are all grown from scattered stardust. Rich back matter provides details about nebulae and how people have studied them, the nebulae pictured in the illustrations (listed as the “cast”), and resources for further learning.

Charming and fun books about friendships for toddlers from Candlewick Press [Review + 1-book Giveaway]

Molly, Olive, and Dexter: The Guessing Game by Catherine Rayner (Author, Illustrator) ISBN: 9781536234145

My thoughts:
A bunny, an owl, and a fox take friendship to a new level when playing a version of "I Spy" called "The Guessing Game." Beautifully illustrated in watercolors and delicate drawings, Molly, Olive, and Dexter take turns posing a "guess what" question to the other two critters who in turn try to guess.

I just absolutely love this charming book.

Be sure you enter the giveaway below to  vie for your own copy of Molly, Olive, and Dexter

About the book: Olive the owl is especially good at playing Guess What?, frustrating her friends in this tenderly illustrated story about an endearing trio.

Outside their home in the oak tree at the edge of the meadow, three animal friends are eager to play Olive’s favorite guessing game. “Guess what I’m thinking about,” says Dexter the fox, looking straight at his answer, giving it away. Next is Molly the hare, whose answer is easily guessed because she has pieces of it sticking out of her mouth. But when Olive the owl takes her turn, her friends are soon stumped and grumbly, ready to give up. What could be two things Olive is thinking about at the same time—things that are nearby and lovely, even lovelier than flowers? With beautifully spare, expressive watercolor illustrations, quiet humor, and a gentle text, Kate Greenaway Medalist Catherine Rayner portrays familiar toddler emotions with reassurance and charm, capturing a moment among three friends that young children will feel instantly at home with.

Bizzy Bear: Preschool by Benji Davies, ISBN: 9781536234817

My thoughts:
This is a perfect interactive board book for little toddlers. They will have fun with the tabs to pull out, push, and there is a lot of charm and cuteness in the Bizzy illustrations. The few pages (all very sturdy board) take Bizzy through his day at Preschool.

Another charming and entertaining board book in the Bizzy collection for little ones.

Meet Hannah Edwards, determined school girl, friend, mystery solver, & who has ADHD.

About the book:
This authentic neurodiverse reimagining of Hamlet is a fresh and unconventional take on a classic–that’s also a mystery! It’s Nancy Drew and Sammy Keyes mixed with Turtles All the Way Down and Honestly Elliott.

Cheer on Hannah Edwards in this relatable coming-of-age story about neurodiversity, friendship, school, and family. Great mystery for kids 9-12.

Hannah has a lot on her mind. Her father—the Canola King—is missing, and no one in her small town seems to care. With the support of her best friend Sam Castillo, and their sidekick Tim the Hall Monitor, Hannah embarks on a journey to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance.

Along the way, she uncovers secrets that she records in her journal, confronts challenges in school due to her ADHD, talks to a ghost, and learns the true meaning of determination and friendship.

The novel’s blend of prose and inventive journal entries make it a compelling read for anyone looking for an engaging story with heart.

~~ OF SPECIAL NOTE ~~

October is ADHD Awareness Month and over 9.8% of kids in the US have ADHD, with girls both under-diagnosed and under-portrayed in the media. Debut author Ashley Hards was declared to be “gifted” at age 8 and was diagnosed with ADHD at age 22, and the world she creates in HANNAH EDWARDS is deeply rooted in her own experiences. While Hards masterfully and authentically represents ADHD (and showcases neurodiversity as a positive asset), Hannah’s ADHD is not the focus of the story, but rather another element of her characterization. Reminiscent of Henry Winkler’s Hank Zipzer series, in which Hank’s dyslexia was secondary to his school escapades, neurodiverse and neurotypical kids alike will delight in Hannah’s adventures as she investigates her father’s mysterious disappearance, and relate to her need for agency and her unstoppable drive. Secret word: adventure

Told through Hannah's secret journal, the book features a mix of listicles, transcripts of recordings, an Epic poem, and some straight narratives that will get kids excited about reading, and uses a font that increases legibility and readability for readers of all abilities. Blending mystery, adventure, and coming-of-age themes, HANNAH EDWARDS SECRETS OF THE RIVERWAY is a compelling read for anyone looking for an engaging story with plenty of heart.

HELPS: Fabled Films Press has numerous classroom resources written and developed under the supervision of educators and professionals to support the book, including a Neurodiversity Discussion Guide by Dr. Dawn Jacobs Martin, PhD; a Common Core Language Arts Guide by Pat Scales; and a print-at-home Tween Activity Kit with word games, crafts, and writing activities. All of these resources and more are available at www.Hannah-Edwards.com.

About the Author
- Ashley Hards was declared to be “gifted” at age 8 and was diagnosed with ADHD at age 22. When forced to sit still in class, she found books and writing to be the most engaging subjects, especially Shakespeare. She received both her BA and MA in English Literature from McGill University, where she now teaches writing and continues her research on Shakespeare and ritual.

Always the adrenaline lover, Ashley enjoys skiing, mountain biking, and opera. (Hey, it’s exciting.) She spent many weekends driving across Alberta and hanging out at a ski hill near Pincher Creek, and the vision for Riverway developed over many dark, stormy nights. Like Hannah, she enjoys journaling. Unlike Hannah, she has not solved any mysteries (yet). This is her first book. Find her on Instagram @ashleyrhards.
