"Born to Sparkle" & "Book of Hugs" [Review & Giveaway - USA/CANADA]

BORN TO SPARKLE - A Story About Achieving Your Dreams

Hardcover $12.99
Flower Pot Press

My thoughts:
This cover is so cute and sweet and the title's letters are glitzy sparkly.

Written by a young Down Syndrome lady, she has determined within herself to push herself, and not limiting her dreams and desires to move forward to achieve those dreams.

This little book is simply a line of encouragement to all young people - whether they have perceived limitations such as Down Syndrome - to dream big and work hard at achieving those dreams.

A cute book and very positive encouragement.

About the book: Author Megan Bomgaars, who has Down syndrome, is an activist, TV personality, and entrepreneur. This Fall, she adds “published children’s book author” to her list of accomplishments with her debut title arriving in stores nationwide.

Inspired by Megan’s moving “Don’t Limit Me” speech, Born to Sparkle encourages young readers to dream big and work hard to make those big dreams come true. Whether you dream is to become an astronaut, firefighter, dancer, teacher, chef or anything you can imagine, you can achieve it because, just like Megan, you were born to sparkle!

Never condescending or preachy, Megan’s pitch perfect story reassures, that there are no limits and anything is possible if one follows their dreams and works hard. It’s about doing your very best to make dreams happen. Be brave. Study. Learn. Practice. Ask questions. Educators and parents will revel in this uplifting, inspiring picture book with a cast of stuffed animals leading by example at each turn of the page.

About the author: Megan Bomgaars is an amazing woman who works hard to achieve her dreams every day. She starred on A&Es Emmy Award-winning and Critic’s Choice Real TV Award-winning reality television show Born this Way. Megan currently attends college and has already started her own business, starred on a TV show, and travelled the world as a public speaker. She was even invited to the White house by Michelle Obama to attend the “Beating the Odds Summit.”  This is Megan’s first children’s book.

About the illustrator: Peter John Olcyzk was born in Manchester. He studied art foundation at Manchester Metropolitan University and then illustration at Stockport College. He uses his own experiences and memories to put himself in the mind and shoes of a child when he illustrates, as well as being greatly influenced by stories, music and nature. He currently lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife and two young children.

BOOK OF HUGS - A Story About Achieving Your Dreams

Hardcover $12.99
Flower Pot Press

My thoughts:
Who doesn't love a loveable bear book and especially one with lots of hugs?

Book of Hugs takes the reader (or listener) through a foray of types of hugs and this is done in a gently, jovial reading style.

Especially good to note is the encouragement to "first ask permission" before giving a hug.

A cute book.

About the book: Motivational speaker, disability advocate, and restaurateur Tim Harris’ debut picture book, Book of Hugs, publishes this September. Inspired by Tim’s love of giving big bear hugs and his restaurant that offered up hugs on the menu, this charming how-to guide inspires readers with plenty of reasons to give someone a big hug!

Colorful characters Teddy Bear Tim and his trio of energetic monkey friends share tips on delivering the very best hugs – no matter whether they are happy hugs, sad hugs, fast or slow hugs. Every type of hug is about sharing love. As the book says, “Love is the most important part!”

In our new world of pandemic etiquette and a post #MeToo era, setting and respecting boundaries and gaining consent are among the most important practices we can instill in children. Book of Hugs is an entertaining story that can lead into deeper discussions about permission and new norms.

“Affirms the joy of hugs while highlighting the importance of consent.”  –Kirkus Reviews

About the author: Tim Harris is a motivational speaker, business owner, and disability advocate. He is really good at giving hugs. For a long time, Tim owned his own restaurant and he even had free hugs on the menu. They were so popular that Tim has now hugged over 75,000 people, including the president of the United States! Tim really does love hugs, mostly because he loves LOVE and that is what hugs are all about. This is Tim’s first children’s book.

About the illustrator: Charlie Astrella graduated from the University of Teesside with a First Class Honors Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Animation. He now works in 3D modeling, animation, and 2D illustration to create works of art he is proud of. He has experience in advertising, product design, video games, and children’s books.

THIS RAINDROP (Has a Billion Stories to Tell) by Linda Ragsdale [Review & Giveaway]

Age Range: 5 - 8 years
Flowerpot Press
ISBN-13: 978-1486718177
My thoughts:  What a beautiful introduction to the life cycle of water told in a rather unique fashion with illustrations and textual positioning that provides interest and enjoyment.

Using a vocabulary and alliteration that is most likely beyond the age to which this book is targeted, it does, however, open the reader to share with the young listener the beauty of alliteration and to build their vocabulary in a way that is subtle and yet intentional.

This little drop of water has supposedly been here from the beginning cycling through cloud, rain, sea, river, on leaves and hills, flowing over and watering Earth's plants, people, and critters.

So while not a technical book, it does teach about the cycle of water. While the vocabulary uses words not familiar to young children, it begins to introduce the listener to unknown words identifiable in the illustrations. And while the alliteration is probably lost on the young listener, it is a beautiful exposure of this literary device that will benefit them throughout life.

"This drip is a master of mysteries!
Its magical molecules morph into thin air
then shape-shift back into something new,
like a single drop of dew in the morning."

"Water is a witness to the wonders of the world."

"... sagas and secrets of travelers throughout time."

What an entertaining, educational book.

About the book: This beautiful tale follows a raindrop’s journey on Earth; from the time of the dinosaurs to the creation of the earliest cities an
d beyond. It explains how Earth has depended on the same water supply throughout its existence by flowing and falling all around us, fueling and forming much of what we have seen and used for millions of years.

Featuring a beautiful arlin paper cover with foil text enhancements and educational back matter including an explanation of the water cycle, the importance of water conservation, and resources for further reading, this book introduces a new understanding of our planet and encourages mindfulness and action when it comes to caring for the environment.
In partnership with Trees for the Future (TREES), each book sold plants a tree.

Flowerpot Children's Press presents two new books: Peace Dragon picturebook series - HOW I DID IT & ALPHABETTER [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN: 978-1486712106
Series: Peace Dragon
Flowerpot Press

ALPHABETTER

About the book; Empower your vocabulary with this hilarious dictionary full of playfully re-paired words that motivate, uplift, and inspire. Laugh and learn as you read each new word, and discover the amazing power our words have when we use them to encourage others and ourselves!

My thoughts: This cute picture book takes word definition and development to a new dimension. The author has created new words by combining existing words into a new dictionary. It is quite true that language is an ongoing developmental process and new words come to the fore quite often. These newly minted words are a "fun" excursion into thinking and creating.

I see the purpose of this book that of creating a peaceful, accepting mindset for the child. "Firarming {Fire + Warming} Use your inner fire for warming others, not burning them." Every letter of the entire alphabet is given a brand new word in this system of creating new from two.

While I find the book cute, delightful, engaging and the concept of creating a thoughtful, peaceful mindset in children really good, I personally don't care for the confusing words that are created by combining two words. Perhaps children "get" it. This grandmother didn't.

HOW I DID IT

About the book: Curious and inspired, I was full of ideas. I turned adversity into adventure when I took a chance and tried to change. Readers young and old will be inspired by how I did it.

My thoughts: This is a delightfully illustrated  story that is so much fun to read. As with most of us, "I" is the central character. And "I" has an idea and from that point on "I" gallops through the pages with his penchant for doing something different from the ram-rod straight letter he (or she) is. "I" wants to be different from the way he is designed and so experiments with bending, curling, and being like the other letters of the alphabet. "J" tells "I" to quit being a joker and being all bent out of shape. And then "I" got himself between the lines of the page and had an entirely different point of view.

The letters of the alphabet exclaim with words beginning with their letter: G = good grief; E = take it easy; W = What's wrong with wondering? wondered W.

The gist of the story is that we can be different from what we are perceived to be. And that is certainly true. We should as parents and adults, though, be careful to help our young charges to understand that living by the rules is just as important as realizing our own full potential.

A delightful book. Well done, colorful, and nice and sturdy.

The author's use of words and letters (A saw what C saw) is tickle-your-funny-bone delightful.

About the Author: Linda Ragsdale wants everyone to be a dragon, a Peace Dragon that is! As an author, illustrator, international speaker, and peace teacher, Linda has developed her Peace Dragon series to teach us how to harness our fiery energy into a peaceful and productive outlet by owning our human powers of view, voice, and choice.
