Ellie Claire journals: Faith & Lettering, The Illustrated Word, and Illuminate Your Story

I had no idea how lovely these journals were till I actually had them in my hands and they are simply  Beautiful! The three interactive journals are listed below with some observations of mine on each of them. Personally, I am not one that takes pen to paper and journals. I admire anyone who does this and see great value in it for them individually at the moment they journal and then in the future for themselves or perhaps for their family in later years. Journaling has tremendous historic value.

These journals not only provide a beautiful source in which you can record your thoughts, but they have instructive value in forms of art that will help develop the artist hiding inside of you.

Faith & Lettering

This beautiful cover is embossed and has gold gilt emphasizing the letters and designs. The touch-feel of the embossing is luxurious. The very nice binding begs for you to pick up this journal and look through it. When you do, you'll see opportunities to grow your skill at creating artistic lettering and sketching that you color to release or develop your love of creativity.

The paper is very nice and the space for writing whatever your heart desires is adequate and spaced nicely between opportunities to be creative.

This journal has a more modern look and design as do the art and lettering styles. A super gift for yourself or someone you know that journals or is a budding artist. And as for the actual writing you might do..... Well on one page it has the verse beautifully lettered..... "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." 3 John 1:4 and next to that is a blank page. What an opportunity to bare your heart on that page.

Illuminate Your Story

This journal is a little smaller than the other two in the group. The quality is superb and sturdy. There is even a little elastic band to help hold your place. What is so special, though, is the opportunity to have excellently guided directions and examples of beautiful illuminated lettering such as was used hundreds of years ago to decorate Holy Scripture.

The art of Scripture Illumination such as is featured in this journal is an almost lost art. The Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC has some beautiful manuscripts that were the inspiration for this journal. There is even a short History of Illuminated Letters at the beginning of the journal.

Tucked into the back cover of the journal is a little "Keepsake" pocket. What would you tuck away inside it? A note from a beloved spouse? A child's note attesting to his or her accepting Christ into their heart?

Your story can be written within these pages and your skill developed as you draw and color your letter to illuminate it. The technique to create your own illuminated letters is clearly given with practice areas in the journal. When pages for you to write begin, there is a quote - sometimes Scripture and sometimes from an individual. These are good for getting those thoughts flowing from your pen.

The Illustrated Word: An Illuminated Bible Coloring Journal

The cover of this journal is stunning. The embossed effect of the flowers and scrolls is expertly and meticulously done. The binding is quality through and through with high end paper.

The cover is embossed and texturized with gold foil and the colors of the exquisite art bright yet in excellent taste. Again the Museum of the Bible has lent beauty to this book with the use of the forty illustrations from manuscripts from hundreds of years ago. Each of these illustrations is titled and sourced.

This is a journal in which you can write and your art would be the coloring of pages such as the "I Am God" shown below. A beautiful book and an opportunity to see small bits of beautiful, ancient art that graced ancient manuscripts.

Barnes & Noble: http://bit.ly/Illustrated-BN

I see these as wonderful gifts for special people in your life. Or perhaps one is especially appealing to you.

The Stable Cat's Christmas by Christina Vrba and illustrated by Gail Yerrill [Review and Giveaway]

My thoughts: Kittens are cute and cats are cute and some people simply love having cats around as house pets. So this Christmas story will certainly appeal to them. It takes place in the "stable" where the Christ Child was born and is purportedly what the animals that were present felt and did - the shepherd's dog, the "barn or stable cat, the cow.

Certainly not Biblical in content, it is a cute story telling what each animal can give the King (the Christ Child). The primary character is the sandy colored cat and his transformation into the stripped Tabby Cat.

The story is abundant in sweetness and gentleness and the pictures are softly lovely. It is similar to other stories about the animals present when the Christ Child was born but does include a fable or legend or made up tale of how the Tabby Cat got it's lovely stripes.

About the book: One night in Bethlehem, a small, dust-colored cat returns to her stable to find that a Baby has been born in the night. As all the animals tell the cat about the gifts they gave the Christ Child, the cat sadly concludes that she is too little and powerless to give a gift to the King. But when the Baby shivers and the cat leaps into the manger to comfort him, she discovers that she can give the best gift of all—herself. This timeless Christmas book celebrates the fact that everyone has a gift they can give the King, no matter their size or stature. Enchanting illustrations and a heartfelt message make this book a Christmas keepsake that can be enjoyed year after year.

THE VALLEY OF DRY BONES An End Times Novel by Jerry B. Jenkins

ISBN:  978-1617950087
About the book: In The Valley of the Dry Bones, Jerry B. Jenkins overlays the ancient End Times prophecies of Ezekiel onto the landscape of modern California. After a 17-year drought, multiple earthquakes, and uncontrollable wildfires, the state is desolate. The United States President declares the state uninhabitable and irreparable, directing California's 39 million citizens to relocate. From the air, California looks like a vast abandoned sand box, but to a few groups of people, it's their home. With less than 1% of the population remaining in California at their own risk, the holdouts encounter a clash of cultures, ethnicities, religions, and politics that pits friend against friend with the future of California at stake.

My thoughts: The unthinkable has happened. California is no longer part of the United States (or rather those living there do not have protections and benefits of citizens of the US). Why? Because following unprecedented earthquakes and subsequent fires, and unbearable heat, the area is virtually unlivable.

It is in this setting that Jenkins has placed a band of sixteen individuals who have each answered their pastor's invitation or call to remain in the devastated area to minister spiritually to the remaining 1% of California's prior populace.

The book is written in mostly in dialogue between the sixteen and others in the area. The sixteen primary characters in the book are encamped in a disguised underground site that is secret from outsiders who remain in the area. There is extreme shortage of water and food. Trips are made to areas outside the California land for medicines, mail, and other items. It is not a safe place to be. Danger and deception create situations that only God's mercy. guidance, and protection can overcome.

Their survival skills are surprising. They convert salt water to fresh. They grow food using aqua-phobics. I couldn't figure out how they grew food underground and where their lights came from. But underground they existed with everything they needed. They had two hydro-engineers, a medical doctor, a pastor, etc.

The book is definitely a Christian book with large amounts of quotes from the Scriptures. These are, after all, Christians living in a desperate land and doing it solely to be able to minister to people.

This book did not quite satisfy as former Jerry B. Jenkins stories has done. The character driven story and strong conversational text had me a bit addled at times trying to keep up with who was saying just what to whom. While the main male character, Ezekiel or "Zeke" was growing into what seems to be his "call" of prophet where God was speaking through him with Scripture, I don't see this as an End Times Novel. I see it as a story of a bereft people in a savaged land who are seeking to minister to others in the same plight.

WOULD A WORM GO ON A WALK? by Hannah C. Hall & illustrated by Bill Bolton [Review & Giveaway]

Hardcover - Ages 4-7
ISBN13: 9780824956776
About the book: A comical picture book about the unique qualities of various creatures and how they were planned to be just that way by a loving, wise Creator. So begins this humorous and imaginative picture book that introduces children to the idea that animals are uniquely created by a loving and wise God. Would a Worm Go on a Walk?, with its colorful, comical illustrations, is a fresh, fun way to teach young children that God gave all the animals--and each of us--wonderful qualities and unique strengths. Children will giggle over the ridiculous scenarios presented, and they will come away with the knowledge that we all are loved and special.

My thoughts: It is always a joy and delight to be able to help young children come to a knowledge that all of Creation was made by God and that each creature does what it does simply because it was designed that way by God the Creator. When it can be taught in an entertaining and educational way that is within the levels that will capture the imagination of the young child, it is a true prize indeed.

Would A Worm Go On A Walk? is just such a prize. Written by Hannah C. Hall in good rhyme that flows beautifully and illustrated in such a joyful and delightful way by Bill Bolton, the book will entertain with quirky critters and questions about them - kind of nonsense stuff.  We all know worms don't have feet to walk, but to ask the question "Would a worm go on a walk?" tickles that nonsensical funny bone we all have.

Ending with a strong finish that declares that "God's masterpiece Is YOU!" ("God saw all that he had made, and it was very good." --Genesis 1:31a)

They look just as he wanted,
and they act just as they should.
He made them and he loves them,
and he calls them very good.

But God's designs weren't finished.
His special plans weren't through.
The ANIMALS were just a start.
God's masterpiece is YOU!

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL by Cecil Frances Alexander [Review & Giveaway]

Worthy Kids/Ideals
Ages 4-7 ~ Hardcover $15.99
ISBN-13: 978-0824956769
About the book: A joyful, artistic rendering of a favorite childhood hymn. God's touch can be seen everywhere: in the rivers and streams, in the forest and its creatures, and in each of us. And nowhere is this more lyrically celebrated than in the words of "All Things Bright and Beautiful," first published by Cecil Frances Alexander in 1848. Here, artist Katy Hudson brings new joy to this mainstay of churches and Sunday school classes with her fresh and engaging watercolors. Readers will be swept along as they follow three young children who delight in a day filled with the discovery of "all things bright and beautiful.” This striking book is a beautiful reminder that every good thing we see is from God. Ages 4 to 7.

My thoughts: The lyrics of the 165 year old poem sung as a hymn through the years teaches that God makes all things beautiful. The years have not dimmed the beauty and tradition of this great song because it reaches young and old, educated and uneducated, strong and weak. It is a treasure to be taught and learned.
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
Cecil Frances Alexander's beautiful poem is aptly illustrated in colorful, bright pictures sure to appeal to the younger audience. Adults will enjoy this whimsical artistry as each page defly illustrates the lines of the poem on the page. Two sisters and a brother frolic about the flowers, in the breeze, and amongst the various critters. Joyful! Lively! Serene!

A lovely hymn or poem to learn. A sweet, lovely book. A strong Christian message about the God who made everything beautiful.

An Endless Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti (Holiday Novella) [Review & Giveaway]

About the book: Christmas takes a very different turn when the guests of honor break up instead of announcing their engagement. Trapped with his family, they learn that love looks different than either imagined.

Both in their eighties, Dodie and Wilson Binder celebrate every Christmas as if it were their last. This year, their grandson Micah is planning to ask his girlfriend, Katie, to marry him so they can celebrate with the whole family. But things go very wrong when she says, "no." Now they are stuck. Too many people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for disaster. But sometimes too much is just enough. Especially when it's Christmas.

My thoughts: This is an unbelievably delightful read. Unless you’ve been around a large family, you might find some of the scenes unrealistic – yet they are not. Or if you’re from a rather dysfunctional family like Katie is, you might find the Binder clan a bit fairytale unreal – but they aren’t.

As the Binder family and all the inlaws gather in Grandma and Grandpa Binder’s little cottage way up North, layers of sweetness, tenderness, joviality, joyfulness, playfulness, and lots of other things begin to emerge as the “normal” ebb and flow of Christmas at the Binders.

Bits and pieces remind me of Christmases past at my parents. And of Christmases with my own children. And then of Christmases with my grown children and grandchildren. But the Binders take it to yet another layer of loving interaction and caring.

Without giving away too much of the story, sufficie it to say that Grandpa Binder gives them a little scare and that takes the family to another layer of cooperation and caring.

This is a must read Christmas novella. Be sure you find a copy somewhere. You may want to get it early in the season so you have time to share it with someone else.

B Is For Bethlehem: A Christmas Alphabet by Isabel Wilner & illustrated by Elisa Kleven [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN: 9780824956745
Hardcover $16.99
About the book: B is for Bethlehem by Isabel Wilner, follows the letters of the alphabet to tell the story of the Nativity to young readers. The rich illustrations will depict the events, people, and places associated with the birth of Jesus.

My thoughts: Originally published in 1995, this is a 25-year anniversary edition. This is an absolutely beautiful book. The detail and rich colors are just a joy to see. The art is whimsical and yet reminiscent of Russian or Ukrainian folk art.
The classification of this book is Children's Poetry, Christmas Poetry, Christmas, Nativity and that it truly is. This is a reverent poetic portrayal of events and personages surrounding the birth of the Savior. The little couplets tell the sweet and rich story as no other alphabet book I've seen to-date.

I am delighted that they have published this 25-year Anniversary edition. Don't miss this one!

Silent Night (A VeggieTales Musical Board Book) [Review & Giveaway]

  • ISBN-13: 978-0824919344
About the book: The Veggies are putting on a Christmas play based on the carol 'Silent Night' in this new musical board book.

Bob, Larry, and all the Veggie friends put on their costumes for a Christmas play about Jesus' birth told through the verses of 'Silent Night.' Laura Carrot lovingly presides over the scene as Mary while she watches the baby sleep. Out in the fields, the shepherds quake at the sight of the angels who appear. The entire cast gathers around the manger to celebrate, 'Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.'

The lyrics of this traditional carol were written in 1816 by a young priest named Joseph Mohr. His friend and musician, Franz Gruber, added the melody in 1818, and on that Christmas Eve, a song was born that captivated the hearts of people throughout the world.

Push the sound button to hear Larry sing the refrain of the song. This fun, yet reverent, Nativity book is a great way to keep toddlers talking -- and singing -- about the true meaning of Christmas. Ages 2-5.

My thoughts: Ideals and Candy Cane Press have given us another delightful children’s board book with the music push-the-button. Children just simply love these little books and the beloved Christmas Carol “Silent Night” makes it even more special.

The Veggie Tales characters are in a Christmas Nativity play and the lyrics of “Silent Night” are the story lines. Push the button and simply sing along. It will help a young child learn the turn and lyrics of this beloved Christmas Carol. Sized just right for little hands to hold and carry about the house throughout the day. Parents may eventually tire of hearing the tune but they can calmly bear it because they know this is a building block for a Child’s relationship with the Christ of the nativity. A plus is that you can replace the batteries when needed.

Another sweet book highly recommended by Chat With Vera.

This Little Light of Mine written by Kathleen Long Bostrom

ISBN: 9780824919580 - $12.99
Ideals Children's Books an Imprint of
Worthy Publishing Group
The Veggies are camping in the park by the lighthouse. It's a beautiful night, but Junior admits that he is a little afraid of the dark. Surrounded by his friends, he soon learns about the different types of light around us, including the ways God lights our path and shines through us. Children can push the sound button to hear the Veggies singing the refrain from This Little Light of Mine. This charming tale with the popular VeggieTales characters will comfort little ones and inspire them to let their light shine.

My thoughts: I just love these little board books with the music button. The kiddies love them, too. Throw in VeggieTales characters and you have a win-win treasure.

This time the book has more than the words to the song. The characters learn how to not be afraid of the dark and that there are many types of light. But best of all is God lighting our path.

So get ready for those little feet to tread throughout your life with those little hands grasping this little board book and their little fingers repeatedly pushing the "Little Light of Mine" button. An additionally good idea, too, is the fact that you can replace the battery when it dies. And you will, of course, because you want that kiddie's light to shine.

Whatever Wanda! (Shine Bright Kids) by Christy Ziglar & illustrated by Paige Billin-Frye [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN: 9780824956684
Hardcover $14.99
About the book: The third title in the Shine Bright Kids series, Whatever Wanda! teaches children the importance of having a good attitude.
Wanda is in serious need of an attitude adjustment! She doesn't want to accompany her family to the Rubber Duck Days Festival, and once there, she won't participate in any of the events or join in with her friends. Soon Wanda receives some helpful advice and learns that:

'Sometimes you have to believe something will be great before it actually is. Being positive is a choice that makes everything better, not to mention, a whole lot more fun!'

My thoughts: Willow and Marvin were the first two kids in the Shine Bright Kids stories learning lessons in life and behavior. Now we're meeting Wanda. Whatever Wanda has a poor attitude and graces everyone with her "whatever," uncooperative attitude.

When presented the opportunity to engage in a day of fun activities with her family and the whole community, she doesn't want to do so and makes her disgruntled attitude known. As the day progresses, she begins to realize that her friends, Willow and Marvin (remember they are Shine Bright Kids, too), are having so much fun.

Then Whatever Wander" yields to an attitude adjustment. Good job. Now she can have some fun with the others. A sweet, well-written story that teaches children valuable lessons. The illustrations are charming and give such pleasure to the reader (and listener). Love these Shine Bright Kids books.

About Shine Bright Kids: Choose Right. Shine Bright. The Shine Bright Kids series provides children and their families with the tools to teach the importance of making good choices. The series explores such topics as: using good judgment, taking responsibility, having a positive attitude, and demonstrating perseverance. Ages 4 to 8.

Jesus Loves Me (Traditional) illustrated by Laura Logan [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN: 9780824919511
There is nothing quite as sweet and beautiful as a little child singing "Jesus Loves Me."

Traditionally one of the earliest songs taught young children, it evokes deep-felt emotion in the heart of the hardest of individuals and touches deep into the recesses of the Spirit.

This sweet children's board book is strong enough to endure much handling, hugging, toting, kissing, dropping - in short, it will get lovingly abused by a little one whose little hands will carry it on many a journey.

As it is being lovingly carried and "read," the little button in the corner will be repeatedly pressed to repeat the tune as accompaniment for that wee little voice singing this favorite - "Jesus Loves Me."

I just love the picture that the use of this little book will create, the truth that will be seeded in the heart, and the joy of a little voice lifted to Jesus.

SomeBunny Loves You! - written by Melinda Rumbaugh & illustrated by Cee Biscoe {Review & Giveaway}

About the book: A playful, sweet music book that celebrates love for a child.
This delightful book is centered around a love poem to a child:

Right from the start, since you were new,
You've had Somebunny loving you.
I'll give you hints. Can you guess who?
Somebunny loves you.

Each page celebrates something about the little rabbit and concludes with the refrain, 'Somebunny loves you.' Children will love the rhyming text and sweet illustrations, quickly catching on that the 'Somebunny' in the book is really the narrator, and the feelings are echoes of what their loved one feels for them. The reassuring message of unconditional love is accompanied by a delightful melody that plays when the sound button is pushed. Ages 2 to 5.

My thoughts: Sweet! Sweet! Sweet! It's Spring and we just love bunnies. This is just a sweet little rhyming (song) book about a wee little bunny that some "bunny" loves. It is a bit of a mystery.  It is also a "push the button and listen to the song book." These are always favorites of the little ones.

A charmingly illustrated board book that tiny little hands can grasp and tote around with them all day (Oh! And yes, these little ones do tend to do that.), pushing the button and singling along with the music.

A little book, a little song, a little rhyme, for those wee little hands. A real winner!
