About the book: ER nurse Macy Wynn learned essential, gritty lessons in the California foster care system: land on your feet and trust no one. She’s finally located the fellow foster child she loves like a sister, but the girl’s in deep trouble. Macy’s determined to help, no matter what it takes. Her motto is to “make it happen” in any situation life throws at her—even when she butts heads with an idealistic cop.Deputy Fletcher Holt believes in a higher plan, the fair outcome—and his ability to handle that by himself if necessary. Now he’s been yanked from Houston, his mother is battling cancer, and he’s attracted to a strong-willed nurse who could be the target of a brutal sniper.
My thoughts: By Your Side from The Crisis Team Series written by Candace Calvert involves drama, romance and faith!
Being an RN myself for 30 years, I tend to be more critical of novels
involving medical information. This book is accurate and informative in its medical information, without overwhelming the non-medical reader!
I also enjoyed the story because some of the supporting characters from Calvert's previous book, Life Support, are the main characters in this story. The best part is you can enjoy By Your Side without having read the previous novel, although I think the story is more enjoyable knowing the background in the characters' lives. The main characters in this story line are Justin Holt, a deputy, and Macy Wynn, a victim of crime. Their lives become entangled from one crime scene to another, while the story unfolds.
Law enforcement and Crisis chaplaincy are the main focus, while the emergency room and hospital setting are a small part of this novel. Although the outcome of the story is a little predictable, it keeps your attention and Calvert makes the characters come to life! I have enjoyed reading this book (and "Life Support") and look forward to reading more in this series by Candace Calvert. (guest reviewer, M.Godley)

ReplyDeleteI think crisis personnel are amazing. They are courageous, they keep their cool under pressure, and they genuinely want to help people. It takes a special kind of person to be able to handle the pressures of that kind of job.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, all!
ReplyDeleteThank you again, Vera, for hosting me here and for reviewing By Your Side--an honor on all counts.
Hello Patty--yes, (giggle) I am sort of known as the author who is equally as comfortable at the keyboard and in the kitchen.
Sonja: So good to see you here. Yes, the crisis teams are amazing and compassionate volunteers.
Kim: I promise to not sing here--Newfoundland may never be the same. ;-)
Candace has lived a very exciting life and faced many joys and trials but I find it amazing That she swam with stingrays and rode a camel at the pyramids!
ReplyDeleteCrisis personnel in all fields perform much needed services and as much as I admire them, I am not sure I could do their jobs.

ReplyDeleteCrisis Personnel are very special people to deal with trauma with such skill and compassion.
ReplyDeleteCandace shared that she has a new novella, The Recipe, coming out in 6 weeks
ReplyDeleteCandace loves cruising! On a boat, not in a car. Something I've been afraid to try due to major issues with motion sickness... My husband may yet talk me into it, though.
ReplyDeleteI have an all-new appreciation for crisis personnel. In the last few years, my dad was Life-Flighted to the hospital, earning a T-shirt from the Life Flight personnel. His trip in their helicopter saved his life, getting him the best medical care in the area in a timely fashion. Also, just under a year ago, I slipped in a hotel tub, cracking my head on the ceramic tile surrounding the tub. The Columbus, Ohio emergency personnel were beyond kind and they got staples into my head in a very efficient manner. I was in and out in under an hour and was still able to make it to the first state track meet I was in Columbus to attend! These heroes see people at their very worst and dole out patience and comfort in huge amounts. I can't praise them enough!
ReplyDeleteCandace Shared a picture of her adventurous daughter, and the book Chance of Loving You a romance collection she is a part of.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that Candace loves to travel by cruise and has rode a camel by the pyramids, swam with stringrays and sang with a Newfoundland country band. That all sounds like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteI have a great respect for Nurses, Doctors, Chaplins, Emts, really all crisis personnel. They see a lot of tragedy and are always there helping others.
This looks like a really enjoyable book! Thanks for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com this week!
