Jesus, Our True Friend: Stories to Fill Your Heart With Joy by Sally Lloyd-Jones

https://amzn.to/46jMIqg

My thoughts:
Beautifully written to bring beloved Saviour, Jesus, to young hearts, Jesus, Our True Friend is a welcome addition to children's book collections, church libraries, and libraries that care to include Christian publications. It makes an exceptional gift that will bring delight and help establish the child's concept of Jesus.

In chapter book form with a "Table of Contents," the book lends itself well to read-aloud sessions. There is more "story" and details than the very youngest child will understand, grasp meaning of, or sit for. However, it lends itself well for those who have learned to read or for wonderful family read-aloud time.

The text (in my opinion) simply flows beautifully as the stories of Jesus are recounted. They seem to caress one's heart with their beauty. And adults will have glimpses into deeper truths that simple words can convey. For example in "The Two Sisters," Jesus tells Martha that "the thing you are carrying is too heavy for you." She was just doing meal preparation, etc. What was too heavy? No, Jesus was actually telling her that the "works" mentality was too heavy. She needed the time with Jesus just like Mary did.

So I highly endorse this beautiful book.

About the book: Jesus, Our True Friend is a beautiful collection of seven stories from Jesus’ life that share the good news—that our Rescuer has come to mend God’s broken world, bring us back to God, and show us what Love is really like. From Sally Lloyd-Jones and Jago, the creators of the beloved and bestselling The Jesus Storybook Bible, these stories will fill your heart with joy as you come to understand just how deep God’s love is for you.

Jesus, Our True Friend tells the stories of Jesus’ life in beautiful, lyrical prose—and captures their deep theological truth in words even a child can understand. This seven-story collection includes miracles from Jesus’ life like the Wedding at Cana and the Miraculous Catch of Fish, parables Jesus told like the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, and people Jesus met like Mary and Martha. These stories showcase Jesus’ great love and deep empathy for the lost, the outcast, the suffering, as well as for his friends and his followers. And for us, too.

"The Glorious Image of God: How Jesus Reveals Who God Made You to Be" by Rousseaux Brasseur & illustrated by Arief Putra

My thoughts: The concept of teaching children that they are made in the image of their creator, God, is terrifyingly deep and complex. The author has attempted to do this starting with having the child view their own image in a mirror and then reflecting on the simple fact that what they see is a copy or image of themselves. This is then somehow translated to our being a copy or image of God similar to the reflected image in the mirror.

Then the author goes on to tell the Biblical account of creation of man by God, the fall of man (sin entering the world), the worship of manmade images or gods, and finally, the coming of the Son of God as redeemer and saviour. All a very expansive and complex explanation to a child of his being created or made in the image of God.

The children depicted in the illustrations are cute and bright-eyed and other illustrations reflective of the storyline. The story itself is told in a loosely written rhyming method that is somewhat hard to read since the meter is not consistent.

Theologically, the book is sound.

About the book: Being made in God’s image can be a hard concept for children to fully grasp, but The Glorious Image of God explains how, through the story of Jesus, we can learn to see God’s reflection within ourselves and foster a deeper sense of spiritual identity and self-worth. From ministry leader and children’s book author Rousseaux Brasseur, this masterfully woven, rhyming text dives into stories from the Bible unpacking what it means to be an image bearer of God, helping us to better understand how we can share God’s love and goodness with others in our lives.

Every human being is a wonderful work of art, made in God’s image and capable of reflecting God’s goodness and light to others. The Glorious Image of God is a fun exploration of the story of how God wove his likeness into us humans, where our purpose comes from, and how Jesus reflects who God made you to be. This picture book for kids 4 and up is designed to help grow children’s foundation of faith, guiding them to understand how they reflect the image of God and how God delights when his children fill the world with his love.

The Glorious Image of God:
  • Is an ideal addition to any child’s bookshelf or children’s ministry library, unpacking biblical truths in a theologically sound manner to bring increased understanding for children 4 and up
  • Full of colorful, bright illustrations that engage children and help them imagine Bible stories as well as modern day scenes where they can reflect God’s image.
  • Perfect for reading together at bedtime, in Sunday school, in Christian classrooms, or any favorite read-aloud times.
  • A great gift for Christmas, Easter, and any gift-giving occasion or holiday.
Help your little ones understand the profound concept of being made in God’s image. Through Jesus, they will learn to see God’s reflection within themselves, fostering a deeper sense of spiritual identity, self-worth, and connection to Jesus.

Deep Breath, Little Whisper by Scott James & illustrated by Irina Avgustinovich

https://amzn.to/46jMIqg

My thoughts:
A lovely picture book that teaches that prayer can be a breath, a whisper, a shout out or a cry. The emphasis is on pausing and taking a deep breath when confronted with various times of life that we need the love of God to reach down to us and help us.

Beautifully written and delightful illustrations.

Lovely!

About the book: Help your child discover the importance of talking to God during all types of situations with this picture book that explores the use of breath prayers. Throughout, kids will learn that each of their direct praises, quick thanks, and whispered requests can bring them peace and build a stronger relationship with their heavenly Father.

God loves it when His children talk to Him—and connecting with God can be as easy as using a simple word or phrase. Deep Breath, Little Whisper introduces the idea of breath prayers by using a series of kid-friendly scenarios and engaging text to show young readers how they can have a conversation with God in the moment, wherever they are and however they’re feeling. Each example also helps remind them that prayer doesn’t have to be big and complex to be meaningful—it just has to come from the heart.

The illustrated book is perfect for:
  • read-aloud or prayer time
  • introducing breath prayers into your family
  • helping children from preschool to early elementary develop a relationship with God through easy-to-remember prayers and prompts
  • teaching different types of prayers, including praise and adoration, thanksgiving, intercessory, and confession
  • showing kids how they can calm their minds and turn to God no matter what happens

LOVE ON THE HORIZON (Horizons Series #4) by Penny Zeller [Giveaway]

ISBN: 9781957847528
Maplebrook Pub. (Buy)
Softcover $16.99
Kindle $3.99

A fresh start. An unexpected chance at love.

Magnolia “Mags” Davenport has not had an easy life. Determined to leave behind painful memories, she decides, on a whim, to move halfway across the country to Horizon, Idaho, a town she's never before heard of. What should be a simple escape to a new life turns into an adventure she never imagined. From dangerous train rides to a stagecoach robbery, Mags wonders if she'll ever reach her destination. When she finally sets foot in the small town filled with friendly people and a slightly aggravating, but kind and handsome man who needs spectacles, will she find the new beginning her heart craves?

Four things matter most in Timothy Shepherdson's life—faith, family, farming, and food. Content as a farmer and uncle to his passel of nieces and nephews, Timothy isn't interested in courtship or romance, especially since none of the women with their caps set for him can cook. What should be a simple trip into town changes everything after a case of mistaken identity. Timothy finds himself not only under the ire of newcomer Magnolia Davenport, but immensely intrigued when he learns she's opening a bakery. Can he convince the wary baker to both forgive and give him a second chance?

Take a trip to Horizon, Idaho, in this tender romance that reminds us that God is the author of new beginnings.

**Please note: Love on the Horizon is a faith-filled Christian historical romance.**

Perfect for those who enjoy the following tropes:
  • Strong heroine
  • Friends to more
  • Small town
  • Found family
  • Adoption
  • Humor
  • Running from the past

Movie: Audrey’s Children: The True Story of Dr. Audrey Evans - In Theaters March 28

Only in theaters
March 28, 2025

AUDREY'S CHILDREN tells the untold true story of visionary British physician Dr. Audrey Evans, who burst onto the scene in 1969 as the first female Chief of Oncology at the world-renowned Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Battling sexism, medical conventions, and the subterfuge of her peers, Evans developed the first Neuroblastoma Staging System, co-founded the first Ronald McDonald House for families of patients, and, ultimately, impacted the lives of millions of children and families around the world.

When Dr. Evans started her work, only 10 % of children with cancer survived, now nearly 80% survive. Rated PG. https://www.audreyschildren.com/

My review: As a young adult contemporary of the featured heroin, Audrey Evans, I can positively say that this film truthfully depicts that time when women were still considered inferior to men in position, intellect, power, and person and they were shuffled aside as unknowing and unwelcome. But Audrey persisted and plowed through the mores of the time using her determination, her intellect, her intuition, and her deeply caring spirit to persist in developing a methodology to cancer treatment that has generated wonderfully amazing results in survival rates.

As a pediatric oncology scientist and doctor she was been given the position as head of pediatric oncology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and yet she still is not respected quantitatively. But she persists. And in her love of her small patients and her unfailing desire to bring healing to them, she see a way through. But a new treatment plan must be rational and there must be reason behind changes. So she and a couple of others begin to piece the data together. This is done in an archaic method of sticky notes on the wall. But they do it and find the breakthrough.

So begins a two-drug treatment and five-level-staging to categorize the patients for treatment. And it's a winner.

This is an absolutely delightfully rewarding film about Audrey and her trail-blazing career. I found the acting excellent. The emotional portrayals are intense from co-worker's rebuttals to parental tears at a dying child's beside. And the portrayal of Audrey herself was that of a proper yet feisty, quirky yet traditional, intensely intellectual yet momentarily lacking in common sense driven individual. Superb filming with settings absolutely like 1960s and 1970s hospital corridors and basements. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to view this movie.

2 Children's Books Embrace Emotional Support for Youngsters [Reviews & 1 book Giveaway]

Social Emotion Learning with New Picture Books!

Foster and teach social emotional learning with picture books that discuss self expression, believing in yourself, understanding your moods, making friends, and learning to be brave. Important reads for little ones to learn problem solving and emotional acceptance.

Terrible Horses by Raymond Antrobus & illustrated by Ken Wilson-Max | Ages 3 to 7

My thoughts:  An interesting take on sibling rivalry and strife within the home. The young boy is pictured next to his older sister. He wants to be with her, share her things, have her attention, play with her, and be with her. But all of this annoys her to the point of quarreling.

The young boy is an unusual child in that he takes to "pen and paper" and begins to write and draw a story about horses. It is about a little pony and lots of big aggressive, fast-trotting, pushy horses - Terrible Horses. Each time the boy has an argument with his sister, he writes in his book.

Later the sister finds the book and it moves her to console and pay loving attention to him.

An interesting take on sibling rivalry.

About the book: In a relatable tale about two siblings at constant odds, a child discovers that expressing himself through stories can help resolve conflict and generate understanding. Secret word: support

My sister is cooler than me.

I want her friends to be my friends.

I want her things to be my things.

For one little boy and his older sister, fights are always waiting to happen—when he takes something without asking, jumps on her bed without asking, even wanders off without asking. And when they fight, they don’t use words: it’s all push, pull, hurt, hide. To cool off after, the boy retreats to his room to write and draw stories—stories about terrible horses trampling and galloping, while he is a lone pony unable to compete or speak or sleep. One morning, the boy wakes up to find his sketchbook missing, taken by his sister. What now? Will this make things worse, or could it help them to finally understand each other? With empathy and simplicity, Terrible Horses has much to say about using creativity to rein in anger, reflect, and see life through someone else’s eyes.

Gray by Laura Dockrill & illustrated by Lauren Child | Ages 3 to 7

ISBN: 9781536235463
Hardcopy $18.88 US
My thoughts:  This is an absolutely outstanding book. Very simple. Very direct. Very caring. Very understanding.

The child is young and is not feeling like he usually does. He feels off color or "gray." He is bewildered. His mother speaks kindly and understandably to him helping him understand that even though he feels off, or "grey," it doesn't mean the brightness or the other colors have gone away.

She explains that she loves him no matter how he feels.

The illustrations on this sturdy book are bold, eye-catching, colorful yet infused with lots of gray to illustrate the point of the book. There are eye grabbing (and finger stabbing) cutouts on the pages that lend interest and artistry.

I totally enjoyed and recommend this book.

About the book: Poetic words, evocative art, and die-cuts throughout combine to explore a child’s moods through color—or the lack of color—and offer a reassuring message of love and acceptance.

Today I feel gray.

But that’s OK.

Some days you may feel sunshine yellow or orange-balloon bright. Other days you’re gray, or even night-sky black—like a dark scribble on a page, a storm in the clouds, or a puddle in the road. Gray is when you don’t feel like yourself, or like you don’t belong. But however you feel, there are big hugs (red) and loving lullabies (blue) waiting, and even the grayest sidewalk is a canvas for you to fill with the colors you choose. A tender narration from British spoken-word poet Laura Dockrill and subtle, spare artwork from former UK Children’s Laureate Lauren Child offer a comforting read for young children that addresses feelings of sadness and assures them that they are never alone.

Cute socks, a worthy cause, warm feet all bring a bit of joy in my day

I was given the opportunity to review colorful socks from the Funny Squared Socks company. They have their own online presence (click here) as well as a shop on Amazon (click here).

It's cold outside today here in North Carolina; daytime is in mid 20's and evenings in the teens. So socks are pretty much a "must wear" item. I've got the fireplace going for some warm, snuggly, cozy reading and I'm wearing these colorful socks to brighten my day. We're expecting a bit of snow later so I expect we're in for a few days of cold weather.

These socks come in a variety of designs and you can get a one-pair package or multi-pair packages. I have the pair that benefits a worthy cause - rescue of animals from the Asian meat market. Read about it here. Note that these socks are limited editions.

If you look closely, the white "splotches" at center front represent a dog's ears, eyes, and nose/mouth. I think the thoughts that went into the design show caring and interesting. I think the colors are lovely and bespeak care and gentleness.

About these socks.... they are soft, snug fitting, stretchy, comfortable, colorful, fun to wear. I highly recommend them either in the limited edition socks that benefit a worthy cause or in the other colorful sets. My socks came in an individual box with information about the socks, a cute little bookmark magnet, a little plastic drawstring bag for sock storage or carrying. A nice little package that makes a great gift.

I wish you could touch them and feel the softness and the stretch. I think you'd be impressed just as much as I am.

DISCLOSURE: Socks were provided at no charge to me to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given. No compensation was received for this post/review.

ELLA FREDA ORGANICS MICRODERMABRASION SCRUB [Review & Giveaway USA]

Ella Freda Organics Microdermabrasion Scrub was surprisingly effective for a product in this price range. The product is in a lovely jar that will be nice looking on your bath counter. Inside the jar is a aqua/blue gel-cream that glides on easily for massaging onto the face. The little "scrub beads" are just enough roughage to cleanse without irritation. I truly believe this will work on ALL TYPES of skin.

Lightly sloughing off impurities from the environment, dirt, makeup build up, dead skin cells is important for maintaining good skin. This product is just gentle enough and just abrasive enough to do a thorough work of cleansing without harming. As with any product, especially scrubs, it is important to avoid getting it into one's eyes.

I just love using this Microdermabrasion Scrub and there are very few "scrubs" for which I can say that. My daughter was visiting me and she used some of this product while here. She also found it effective for cleaning her skin and loves it.

As you use the Microdermabrasion Scrub be sure you use all over your face, under your chin, and along your neck (again, remember be careful to avoid getting in eyes). After two to three minutes of massaging it on your skin, splash water (I like warm to cool) all over. Dab with clean washcloth. Again, careful of the eye area when rinsing just as when massaging product onto face. Repeat rinse and dab until you feel all the "grains" are off. Pat dry. Allow face to rest a bit.

Then begin with your regime of products. I usually apply a serum and moisturizer morning and  evening. Some days I also apply a light oil (be sure to use high quality products). Then if I'm going out (or just want a "pick-me-up"), I apply makeup. Makeup products work well with the Ella Freda Organics products.

Anti aging skin care is a multi step process. Genetics plays a part in how our skin ages and we can't control that. Stress and living in a highly emotional state is highly detrimental. You need to protect your face from sun damage while still getting sun to maximize your Vitamin D - balance is key. Also, a healthy diet is good. I prefer a pretty well rounded diet that provides the nutrients we need without the extra calories and harmful foods and additives. Then finally, one needs to protect the skin from the elements and environmental pollutants by using a good cleanser and moisturizer. Use the best you can afford looking for those with preventative and anti-aging ingredients.

I think this is a very good product and suggest you give it a try. Check out the Ella Freda Organics website.  Click Here

Product information: The Ella Freda Organics dermabrasion scrub gently loosens dirt, removes dull and dry skin, resurfaces and softens skin. It helps gently polish away damaged skin, blackheads, stretch marks. It works best when applied to damp/wet skin. Most exfoliators tear and damage your skin. Our natural face and body scrub remove daily build-up, so your face can heal and look radiant again. Gently exfoliates, reduces pore size, eliminates acne scars, and removes dead skin cells for a blemish free, radiant glow.

IMIM Anti-Aging Face Cream Moisturizer with Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid

Our face expresses our emotional lives, experiences both pleasant and unpleasant, and the years take a toll. The environment takes its affect on our skin as does damage from too much sun. By applying creams to our face, we can slow the appearance of winkles created by the joy and stresses of life.

The IMIM Anti Aging Moisturizer has hyaluronic acid and retinol  in a light, quickly absorbed cream base that I can use day and night. It feels wonderful on my face. Though light weight, it is non-greasy and it does a good job of moisturizing. Makeup goes on quite well over this. Also, my face has a nice soft "glow" without makeup for those "stay-at-home" days. My skin is still soft feeling hours after using. Priced in the mid-range, it is quite affordable.

A note for when you're applying moisturizer... Be sure you don't neglect under your chin, your ear lobes, and the area behind and under your ears. They develop creases as we age and the skin naturally has a way of drying out on its own. A bit of moisturizing cream in these areas does wonders.

Previously, I reviewed the IMIM Neck Cream. You can read that review here

Best Gospel Groups for Your Next Church Event*

The definition of the Gospel means good news. That's the feeling that gospel music invokes its listeners and fans. Through music, the ideology of Christianity has been spread since the late 1800s.

During this time, African-American spirituals were fusing with hymns and other sacred songs to form what we now know as gospel music. The songs would move people to dance, clap their hands and stomp their feet. If you have ever heard gospel music live, it sounds and feels like a celebration. And that's just what it should be. You are attending church to celebrate, and you should leave feeling invigorated and with a new sense of hope.

Finding a Choir

If your church is hosting an event, hiring a traditional southern gospel group may be just the thing you need to impassion your congregation. There are plenty of choirs that are available and travel from church to church, spreading their message of celebrating Christ through music and dance.

How to Choose Your Style

There are four main branches of gospel music. While they all share similarities, they are each unique in their rite. Thomas A. Dorsey, who is known in the choir community as the father of gospel music, was instrumental in helping evolve the style of a worship song. There is no right or wrong answer to what style to choose, and each choir might have a different take and version of their music. There are even choirs who incorporate a blues style into their mix. Some choirs are more sedate, while others take praise and worship to even higher levels.

Quartet Style

The quartet is where a small group, usually four and typically male singers perform. They sing together with sounds that feature tight harmonizing vocals.

Traditional Gospel

Traditional Gospel is a throwback to the original sounds of Gospel music. This style features a choir, usually in the regular choir robes harmonizing and singing the classic songs.

Contemporary Gospel

This style is similar to the traditional style but with a twist. Contemporary style puts a spotlight on soloists to spread the message. The choir serves as the backup singers, and they still do perform the traditional songs.

Praise and Worship

Praise and worship is a hybrid of traditional and contemporary styles. There is an appointed leader that takes most of the lead vocals. The choir helps lead the remainder of the congregation to join in singing the gospel hymns.

Conclusion

Many people that are looking to invigorate their church event opt for the praise and worship style of gospel music. This style of music is perfect for helping to lead activities and encouraging congregation participation. Before you hire your gospel choir, you will want to make sure you know what your objective is and what the event is about. This will help you to narrow down style and vibe. You can spend some time looking at videos of the choir's past performances to help you better understand what they will deliver at your event.

Best Places to Take Kids in Knoxville

If you are Tennessee bound, you should make Knoxville a priority stop on your family vacation. Many people pass right through Knoxville on their way to the Great Smokey Mountains or Gatlinburg and miss an opportunity to make some memories with the kids.

Knoxville offers up some great family activities that will have your kids begging to return year after year. If you fall in love with the city and want to stay, check out some Knoxville real estate, and make Tennessee your home. Here are a few must-visit places to have fun with your kids.

MUSE

MUSE  is a 4000 square foot indoor playground. Your kids will go crazy running and playing through all the exhibits. They will have such a good time; they won't even realize that they are learning while playing. The interactive exhibits offer up different challenges while weaving in the information that kids will love. They also have a fantastic planetarium that runs all day so you can enjoy it at any time without waiting.

Knoxville Zoo

Many kids love to take a day trip to the zoo. Also, the Knoxville Zoo has an impressive roster of animals for kids to observe and learn about. The most famous residents of the Knoxville Zoo are the endangered red pandas.

Knoxville Zoo is recognized for having more red pandas born at their zoo than anywhere else in the Western World. Aside from the adorable pandas, there are nearly 1000 other animals for you to check out on your visit. Plan to spend the whole day.

James White’s Fort

James White was the founder of Knoxville in 1783, and this fort serves as a monument of his accomplishments. Kids will love to visit the wood cabins and explore each one to learn what life was like on the frontier. You can even schedule a tour to get a more in-depth look at pioneer life during certain times of the year.

It's a real treat to experience. After your tour is completed, make sure you stop in the gift shop. They sell authentic pioneer days treats and other interesting items you might want to pick up. If you are a history buff, there are plenty of additional books to answer any questions that may arise after your trip.

Mead’s Quarry

Mead’s Quarry is part of Ijams Nature Center, which is a trip all by itself. Ijams is an urban wilderness preservation initiative. Ijams encourages visitors to get out and mountain bike, hike and explore everything they have to offer. Mead’s Quarry was famous for its pink marble.

Now, the Quarry has been transformed into a 25-acre lake that is the main reason to visit. The lake is an excellent spot to watch wildlife. If you are an adventurous family, you can rent canoes, kayaks, even stand up paddleboards to get an up-close view. If you visit in the warmer months, take a dip in the cool waters and make a day of it. Many locals make this their go-to destination for summer fun.
