My thoughts:  If you thought from the title that this would be a book to educate parents or children using a variety of charts like bar charts, pie charts, graphs, line charts, you'd be mostly wrong. Sure it opens with a pie-chart but that is just a nifty way of giving you a sort-of Table of Contents. You see, Charts for Babies simply, and eloquently, and uniquely directs little one's thinking to relationships of size and content, to concepts and colors, to relationships of items and relationships with feelings.

You see, it's kind of a chart of the stuff of life. And it's a winner. Start your little ones thinking along these concepts, and you'll be giving them a head start on critical thinking, geometrics, mathematics, art in color, and simple feelings. And it is amazing that Ms. Rial has written the text in simple rhyme. Rhyme is always a plus, I think!

Parents will say, "Oh yea!" as they flip through these simple and point on pages. And, yes, the actual charts are shown at the back of the book. (Be sure you enter the giveaway below!)

My thoughts:  I love when books (and parents) tell the stories of real live heroes rather than fiction super heroes that zip and zap through the air and shoot bolts of lightning from their fists performing superhuman feats. Real people are much greater and inspiring. They are much greater for children to aspire to emulate themselves.

In Mr. Adam Kinzinger's first children's book, he looks at heroes in different walks of life. The boy living this story has a father that is a pilot - super stuff in a boy's eyes. The father gives his son a tour of the United States via his own plane to learn about the many heroes that live all around us.

Focusing on acts of kindness as well as heroic acts, this story guides the reader's thoughts toward the whole of society as it engages in deeds done to help others. It ends with the thought that "Heroes put others first!" Indeed, an apt definition of a hero.

My thoughts: The author seamlessly uses the Biblical account of Jesus healing the man who was blind from birth to help a modern child understand the loss and sadness that comes from the destruction of a tornado that ripped through the neighborhood where he lived.

The book gently begins with the wrenching tale of fear of the roaring storm and then having to face the destruction left in its aftermath. The child (and yes, adults, too) is bewildered and lacking in understanding of these dire happenings, and his mother gently teaches that God loves him and is with him in the storm. This lesson can be used to help one understand storms of life and not just tornados, hurricanes, etc. 

Lots of good information in this sweet book.

My thoughts: My minds simply isn't compliant or frankly doesn't function in the areas of maths, physics, molecular biology, anthropological discoveries or simply understanding much of anything in the scientific or mathematical world. So my ability to comprehend or understand the discussions and conversations filmed in "The Story of Everything" is mostly well over my head. However, I have a vantage point that brings relevance to the discussion of this presentation of past and current thought processes on the discoveries in these highly intelligent fields of study. That is I'm very old and have (albeit from afar) observed through news media, magazines (primarily National Geographic), and Biblical messages that often are contrary with the scientific world view. I've followed the news as an adult since the mid-1950's - so approximately 70+ years. 

I found fascinating the film's records of discussions of great minds through these years of the last century and then those high thinkers countered with today's newest discoveries that debunk theories of the past or build on the shoulders of past discoveries. I don't think the average person has to have a great academic, scientific, or mathematical mind to understand. They just have to listen, consider, and appreciate.

I watched a "screener" version of "The Story of Everything" on my laptop and no, the experience was not optimal. The screen too small and the sound poor. I think viewing this on a large TV screen would be a vast improvement. I watched this in two sittings as the information is heavy and not entertaining. I find it encouraging that minds of people who routinely scoff at the Biblical concept of a Supreme Creative God of the Universe are beginning to gravitate toward the beginning of the universe being a creative act of God - the God who exists infinitely and eternally.

Church & Homeschool Resources - Link

I found the section "Cracking the Code" of particular interest - not because I understood it, but because I remember reading in National Geographic and hearing on the news broadcasts the discovery of the double helix in understanding the structure of the DNA code of the human cell. This was discovered by a molecular biologist and further revelations of a theoretical physicist/mathematician used that DNA code to further understand his field of study.

Watching this interesting film has not impacted my personal view of The Creation. That view remains solidified by faith that all was Created by God as stated in the Bible. As a Christian, I accept the "out-of-nothing, God created" version. I find it encouraging that astute minds such as shown in this film are now finding evidential ideas and equations and are seeing images from deep space that direct their minds and hearts toward the God of Creation!

My thoughts:    This truly is an amazing book. You don't want to miss out on this one if you (yourself, your family, your children) have any interest in the Church, the Christians in these churches, and the countries in which they are located. This fact filled, missions encouraging, informative book about peoples, places, and how the church fares in these 10 locations is a treasure to read, peruse, have available on the coffee table, and definitely in the Church library of any mission minded Christ loving church.

There are 10 countries represented with about three pages of pictures and factoids about them. The main focus is on a particular church represented by our child-host and the village or city and country in which he or she is located. It was stunning to me to see the religions represented in the country and the percentage of each. I was surprised at the percentage of Christians recorded in each country.

Tidbits about the ways each church worships is especially interesting. Whether or not the church is a secretive, house church or a large vocal advocate for Christ in the community and the methods they each use to worship, sing, share their faith is inspiring.

The bright, colorful illustrations are inviting as are the happy faces of the Christian, the believers, the worshipers in each of the countries.

I highly encourage families, church groups, church libraries, and Christian schools to get copies of this really good book.

My thoughts:  As I watch each episode, I've been enthralled at the revelation that is brought to us as we listen to this outstanding narrator, traverse the land where these Biblical events occurred, listen to noted academics and scientists as they, too, reveal how the sacred thread is woven throughout The Lord's Prayer and the depth of insight that can be seen of God and His creation, of Jesus and His love for us, and of the Father's great love for us.

In the second episode I was particularly moved to hear how scientists expound on God's greatness in the infinitely small and the infinitely immense and that now science can see how atoms can jump from the most infinitely small to the infinitely large. This is a revelation that shows man how immense God is - just as Scripture says He is. (Note: My explanation of this leaves much to be desired in clarity. The episode was truly wonderful.)

I love how the narrator brings rich historical events, descriptions, and reasoning into this study of The Lord's Prayer as well. This along with the current academic studies and modern scientific correlation to Scriptural passages is truly revelational. This helps us grasp the context that this beautiful prayer was written in and helps us better understand the depth of the prayer.

Many of us have heard sermons breaking down the phrases of The Lord's Prayer, but I dare say that this docuseries, The Sacred Thread, will implant the beauty, the theological depth, the connectivity of you to God in a new and very special way.

My thoughts: Summer isn't just time for splashing in the pool, soaking in the sun, or whacking a ball out of the park time for kids. It means "down time" and time just being a kid. My thoughts: The illustrations are sweet and tell the story well. The illustrator uses a lot of reds, oranges, and red-browns. Character's expressions, including the dogs, are charming. I think a few line-strokes would add to the illustrations and give more definition. 

I really liked the flow of the story's text and the vocabulary used. The story is well structured and did not "read down" to the kids. 

The story plot is a sweet "lonely child needs companion and gets a rescue dog for a pet." It doesn't harp on the rescue dog theme, but gently inserts it into the story. The family is a caring, loving, and attentive family which is really good in today's world of torn apart families and society in general. It seems the child is schooled at home since she has a tutor. She gazes out the window at the neighbor children playing and her parents sense her loneliness.

The question one asks is "Why isn't she playing with the other children?" Why is she lonely when there are available children? This is something some children will wonder when having this sweet story read to them and there is no answer provided. Yes, acquiring a rescue dog as a pet and companion to the girl is meritorious but the loneliness is only partially solved since the human need for human companionship is not resolved.

In spite of these questions, this is a sweet story and very well written.

My thoughts:  Lots of good take aways from this sweet book. The changes that come into our lives; and in this story, it is the change of homes. Leaving one's home is hard and that is especially true for a child who has known no other home. But change is inevitable in our lives, and so changing a place of residence teaches the way, the right way, to accept and adapt to change. In this case, the story teaches that even though we are in a new place, a new house, a new home, "We are Home When We're Together." This helps teach the lesson of the provision and provenance of God in the changes in our lives. 

There are some pages of really good illustrations in this sweet book, and some I didn't care for as much. I especially liked the winter scene, the beach/ocean scene,  page of high rise apartments, the country farm scene, and the home in the desert. I think my favorite is the winter scene.

And I especially enjoyed finding the wee mouse family that accompanied the family in the journey to change their residence. This is a real treat.

We Are Home When We're Together is a story of trust in God. A story of God's plans for you. And a way to accept changes in our lives with the help of God. Good lessons, sweetly taught. A good book.

My thoughts:  As school nears closure for another academic year and children's attention turns to summer activities including participating in softball and baseball team sports in their area, excitement builds. Boys and girls alike love the fun and the challenge of this; and they desire praise and support from their parents and family as they, hopefully, hit a home run or baseline hit.

Young Isaiah Johnson is no different. He was excited about this big game with his team's rivals and his part in the game for his team. He was excited, too, because his family was there to see him play. But his father has not yet arrived.

The story goes on with Isaiah's dad showing up a bit late, but he did show. He asks his son's forgiveness for being at work "when he should have been at the game." Personally, I don't think the son needs to forgive the father for being at work instead of the child's ball game. That is, unless the father promised to be there or unless the father deliberately stayed at work when he had free time to be at the game. Not all fathers can get off work to attend a child's ball game, etc. However, it is wonderful when fathers can be available to watch their child in their growing up activities - ball games, recitals, school or church plays.

The lesson taught and learned that day on the ball field is well explained in the story, and it is a lesson well learned. We forgive and we are forgiven. The author explains forgiveness and explains God's forgiveness of us as well as our forgiveness of others. I think, too, that parents need to realize that they, as adults, need to seek their children's forgiveness when the parent's actions need to be acknowledged and forgiven. A good lesson for children and parents is taught in the story.

The illustrations are bright, cheerful, and show family participation. The illustrations are digitally created by Emmanuel Boateng (*see more about artist below). 

About the book:  Isaiah Johnson and the Big Game is a thoughtful picture book for ages 3-7 about how we all need forgiveness—even parents—with illustrations by Emmanuel Boateng. Isaiah's baseball team has made it to the championships, and he's up to bat! When his dad shows up late, he apologizes for his absence and asks for Isaiah's forgiveness. But Isaiah is still hurt and isn't sure if he can forgive.

About the Illustrator: Emmanuel Boateng, popularly known as Mind of El, is a Ghanaian self-taught digital artist. He was born and raised in the city of Kumasi in the Ashanti region. Emmanuel has created artwork for a variety of British and African celebrities, but now focuses all his attention on doing illustrations for children's books.

My thoughts:  Unless a person has been in a completely deserted, unpopulated, people-empty place on this beautiful Earth of ours, they have no idea the beauty, immensity, and brilliance of the night sky populated by stars. We miss so much in our heavily populated area and even in our own small patches of ground we call our home turf. We light our porch lights, our street lamps, and of course the plethora of brilliance that lights up our cities.

We don't take into account the effect these lights have on our own lives. And we certainly don't consider or even understand the effect artificial light has on the natural world - birds, animals, insects, plants. In Who Hid the Stars? the author explains much of what is happening in the natural world when the light that man has engineered invades that darkness of night. 

Who Hid the Stars? could prove to be a wake up call to the younger generation to pursue how humans can continue lighting the dark night in a way less harmful to the entirety of the natural world, including humanity. As readers delve into these introductory pages they will begin their journey to understanding the effect of light in the darkness on ourselves as well as the rest of the world around us.

The art is stunning as can be seen from one's first glance of the beautiful cover. Throughout the book, the art and layout is educationally instructive with a precise and artful methodology. 

At the back of the book, there is a short glossary as well as tips for reducing the effects of light. I highly recommend this book, and encourage thoughtful families to include it in their libraries and for school and public libraries to include it in their collections.
