Mistletoe and Mayhem (Red Truck Mysteries #3) by Janice Thompson [Barbour Publishing]

My thoughts:
Written in a casual, conversational tone with lots of interpersonal action, the story is primarily about Rae Lyn, a young woman about to get married and all the excitement as she approaches the big day which is scheduled for a couple days after Christmas. There is a lot of extended family and friends day-to-day and moment-by-moment involvement.

To make matters more complicated and to increase premarital anxiousness, the setting for the wedding is the family's farm; and it is to be held outside - in a field. Then to pile on the troubles.....  calamity strikes with a sweeping fire and a and a wind and rain storm that floods the area.

A fun book about some really  nice people with lots of family love, friend love, Christmas joys and memories, and lots of good feels throughout.

Other books I've read by Janice Thompson have had a bit of humor to tickle your hearts. I didn't sense as much in mistletoe and Mayhem, though there was much cheer and joy. A nice, pleasant, very clean read.

About the Book: A Wildfire Races toward the Hadley Ranch

Breathe in the nostalgia of everything old red truck in book three of a new cozy mystery series.

It’s less than a week until Christmas in Mabank, Texas, and just a few days away from Rae Lyn and Mason’s wedding on Hadley ranch. Unfortunately, a wildfire with mysterious origin is rapidly traveling across several counties and headed right for the Hadley acreage. Fire fighters rush to put it out before the family homestead goes up in flames, taking the business and the old red truck with it. Their perfect wedding may be ruined, and Rae Lyn and Mason are determined to find the source of the fire.

Forgotten Identity by Penny Zeller [Review]

Buy on Amazon
ISBN:9781957847375
Paperback $16.99
Kindle E-book $3.99
Who is he really? And why is someone after him?

My thoughts: The story opens with a woman and dog walking in a bitterly cold, snow covered landscape far off the beaten track but near her home nestled in the woods. The dog discovers a man unconscious, badly hurt, and in need of immediate moving to a safe, warm place. So the struggle begins and she drags him home where she and her mother tend his wounds. He eventually awakens to full blown amnesia.

The mystery of his situation and the warmth and care of this household are the gold thread woven though this novel. Mariah has two young children whom she homeschools and who bring delight to the story.

Eventually the plot thickens and the criminal element takes the focus.

Zeller has written a good book that is squeaky clean (even with the budding romance) and has Christian focus. The book is not "preachy." At times the story takes an intense, fearful development that moves at an exciting pace. At other times the sweetness of a family home with gentle, kind, caring children is the focus.

I found the book to be a joy to read. A good story. A good bit of crime and suspense. A good bit of good folks and the "bad guys."

About the book: Mariah Holzman never imagined a whiteout blizzard would sever all communication from the outside world—communication desperately needed for the injured man Mariah finds near her home. Nor did she imagine helping nurse the man back to health would lead to threats and intimidation. As danger escalates and questions rise, Mariah is left to wonder what kind of person she has allowed into her home.

Grant MacGuire never imagined he would wake up one day in a strange cabin, surrounded by strange people, with no memory of who he is or how he was injured. Secret word: danger. Nor did he imagine his presence would put the lives of those who saved him in danger. As Grant struggles with distorted memories, he wonders if his life is worth the price the Holzman family is paying.

The growing attraction between Mariah and Grant is hindered by Grant’s unknown identity. Is Grant, as the family’s neighbor assumes, a criminal on the run from the law? Or is there more to his identity—and the reason he was attacked—than they realize?

The Highland Heist (A Freddie & Grace Mystery #4) by Pepper Basham

My thoughts:
I don't know who is most loquacious - the author or the cute, book-loving heroine, Grace (Lady Ashley). It seems the words and books-she-read connection flow from Grace's mind and mouth at warp speed. So muddling through this personality quirk, while charming, detracts just a bit from the basic story-line. How-some-ever, please read on because the story is pretty good.

Globe spanning settings have an American girl - Grace - married to Lord Ashley from the United Kingdom as they open the door of Grace's father's American home with the butler telling her it is no longer her father's home. Devastated to learn the current straights in which her father has landed himself, Grace and Lord Ashley begin their traipse through a growing mystery that is rife with twists and turns, knives and head bangs, mysterious gangsters, and shenanigans in a Scottish castle.

As the mystery unfolds, we wonder what will happen to Grace's now penniless sister Lillias and her young child. The whodunnit is interesting and filled with interesting characters.

If readers are expecting a story set in and about Scotland with it's quirks and interesting history, they may be surprised that they don't reach Glasgow harbor until two-thirds through the book. But once they land in Scotland, the plot moves fast with a rewarding conclusion but one that is not achieved without exciting action.

All-in-all, a fun read.

About the book: Grace Storms a Scottish Castle to Save her Sister

Lord Astley surprises his wife with a trip to America to see her family before they end their honeymoon adventures. But just as they arrive, they find Grace’s sister, Lillias, is the prime suspect in her husband’s murder. To add to the confusion a solicitor arrives to tell the sister’s they are needed in Scotland immediately to claim their mother’s inheritance.

The clock is ticking to clear Lillias of suspicion, but someone is determined to keep the sisters from reaching the Scottish Highlands. When Lillias disappears, Freddie and Grace race to Scotland, sure the answers will be found in a long-forgotten castle.

With a ghost from Frederick’s past leaving threatening clues along the way, the mysterious Mr. Kane waiting in the wings to grab the inheritance for himself, and an apparition haunting the infamous castle, Lord and Lady Astley must capture the castle, save Lillias, and not die in the process.

The Highland Heist is a Freddie and Grace Mystery, sequel to The Mistletoe Countess, The Cairo Curse, and The Juliet Code.

Legends of Gold (Golden State Treasure) by Mary [Review & Giveaway]

Paperback $18.99
Preorder: Baker Books
40% Discount + Free Shipping

On a risky treasure hunt in the rugged wilderness, can love trump all odds?

My thoughts:  As with other books by this author, the story is a light-hearted read with a sprinkling of heart-warming wit. The characters are fleshed out and fill their roles complimenting both the story line and the other characters. An assortment of strong, defending, and willing men on the ranch as well as gifted and strong women blend beautifully; and these strong characters keep the trouble makers at bay.

The troublesome issue of orphaned children prevalent during that period of history continues to flow through this series. Many of these orphans have found a home and shelter on the Hart Ranch. And as begun in the first book in the series, Whispers of Fortune, the search for treasure continues.

In Legends of Gold a bit of real California history going back to the exploration by Spanish Conquistadors is woven into the story line. I found that interesting.

Books by Mary Connealy always satisfy and are enjoyable. Part of this is the trust factor - they are squeaky clean, faith-based (but not preachy), and sometimes elicit a chuckle.

Don't miss this one.

About the book: After years of solitude, Tilda Muirhead's life takes an unexpected twist when she accepts a teaching position at Two Harts Ranch following her cross-country pursuit of two brothers obsessed with a treasure map left by their grandfather. Tilda is now tasked with educating those mischievous MacKenzie boys, who are bent on remaining out west with the rest of their family until they find the hoped-for treasure. Then a man named Ben arrives, claiming to be her own long-lost brother. Raised as an orphan with no memory of her past, Tilda is both fascinated and wary of Ben's sudden interest in finding her.

When Ben's motives grow increasingly suspect, rancher Josh Hart suggests Tilda and the young MacKenzies set off on a quest with him that aims to protect Tilda while unearthing the map's secrets. Secret word: gold - As they explore the wilderness, Tilda becomes captivated by the history behind the map, though she doubts it leads to anything more than old artifacts. Yet danger looms ever closer, and Tilda and Josh must rely on faith and their blossoming love to navigate the treacherous path ahead.

"Recipe for Love" (Small Town Shenanigans #2) A Christian Small Town Rom-Com by Penny Zeller [Giveaway]

Welcome to Cloverdale Falls, home to the famous chicken statue, new romance...and an unexpected mystery.

Buy on Amazon
Paperback or Kindle

My thoughts: You can count on a Penny Zeller book to be squeaky clean and Christian in scope. This one doesn't disappoint. It's clean. It's cute. It's a sweet rom-com. And it is Christian in scope but not "preachy."

Part of the "Small Town Shenanigans" books by Zeller, this one is nearly unbelievable in that the town - founded by chicken farmers many years hence - has a chicken statue named "Henrietta" standing midtown and the town's current mascot is a pet chicken by the same name. But of course, that just makes it all cuter and more quirky.

Characters that you'll come to love and will laugh at will spring from the pages of this sweet read.

There's a problem, a mystery to solve, and a worrisome situation for the shop owners on main street. How will it be resolved to everyone's satisfaction, and will the sweet budding romance blossom into full bloom?

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

About the book: Rumors started flying when all of the businesses on Main Street in Cloverdale Falls sold last month. Bakery owner Maisie Carpenter finds herself appointed to uncover the mysterious new owner’s identity, and in the process hopefully allay some of the residents' fears. What happens when she solves the mystery and discovers the man connected with purchasing the businesses is the very man she has recently fallen in love with?

Take a trip Cloverdale Falls in this hilarious Christian rom-com, the second in the Small Town Shenanigans Series. Secret word: funny - Recipe for Love is a standalone with new characters or can be read in conjunction with Love in the Headlines.

**Please note that Recipe for Love is a faith-based Christian contemporary romance.**

Heart of Courage by Penny Zeller (Maplebrook Publishing) [Review & Giveaway]

A new life awaits her...if she can find the courage.

In the spring of 1885, LilyBeth Engel makes the courageous decision to run from everything she's known. She boards a train and goes as far as her meager funds will take her with her young son in tow. With nothing but the clothes on her back, the baby in her arms, her Bible, and a skill for sewing beautiful dresses, LilyBeth determines to succeed with the Lord's help and dogged determination.

Barrett MacCallum owns one of the largest ranches in Hilltop in the Montana Territory. He also owns several of the businesses on the main street. When a woman asks to rent one of his businesses for her new dress shop, he's amenable, even if it means charging the woman less rent because she's obviously destitute.

When Barrett begins to fall in love with LilyBeth, will she have the courage to allow herself to love again with so much at stake?

Heart of Courage is a faith-filled, tender romance with the reminder that God guides our every step.

Perfect for those who love books with the following tropes:

  • Strong and handsome protector
  • Found family
  • Widowed single mom
  • Happily ever after
My thoughts: In 1885 it was often hard being a woman. But if you've lost your husband because he drank himself to death and his evil companions cost you your home and source of livelihood, it would have been beyond hard. Top this rough experience with expecting your first child and you might have despaired of your desperate straights. Young Lily Beth was rescued from her homeless condition by a Christian couple who also led her to saving faith in God.

But then circumstances again required her to find a new place to live and she chose to travel west.He despair turned to timid courage as she and her very young child boarded a train for the West land she landed in the small town of Hilltop, Montana.

Lily Beth's story is one of strong, yet young, faith. A story of caring, concerned townsfolk. A delightful and captivating boy, Otis, who will steal the reader's heart. Mean spirited local ladies. A story of letting God lead and control.

Penny Zeller's books are always uplifting, faith filled. They are always squeaky clean. They are always a sweet delight to read.

The Accused (Secrets to Keep #2) by Cara Putman [Review & Giveaway]

"A brilliant novel that fans of the genre won't want to miss!" —Tosca Lee, New York Times best-selling author of The Line Between

"Gripping and brimming with chemistry, this novel will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page." —Lynette Eason, best-selling and award-winning author of the Lake City Heroes series

Kregel Publishing
Paperback $16.99
ISBN: 9780825448058

My thoughts: Escaping into the legal arena of university law professor, Margeaux, and her former nemesis practicing criminal defense attorney, Chase, via the fiction writing skills of a real life attorney and professor, Cara Putman, proved to be entertaining, enjoyable, and eye opening as to the possibilities a similar case might flesh out in the legal arena.

As they nit pick through police reports, witness statements, and individuals’ lives they find a convoluted trail of evidence that just doesn’t support the accused being the prime suspect.

As the trial proceeds, matters come to a head revealing more than the police bargained for. An exciting and terrifying ending that still leaves a thin thread of wonder.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

About the book: When a popular college student is murdered, her international roommate, Anneliese, becomes a prime suspect. But law professor Margeaux Robbins doesn't believe that the quiet, lonely German girl in her class is the killer.

Chase Crandall is a burned-out defense attorney ready to extricate himself from the grind of criminal law. Secret word: guilty. After he loses a client to tragedy, he's ready for an in-house corporate position.

When Chase is assigned to Anneliese's case, Margeaux is horrified. She doesn't want him to provide legal counsel—not after what happened to his past client. And not with the evidence incriminating Anneliese.

Despite their mutual misgivings, the lawyer and professor pair up to find the killer and prove Anneliese's innocence. Will they be able to untangle the mystery—and navigate their growing interest in one another—before the wrong person is charged with murder? Secret word - accused

Author: Cara Putman is the award-winning, best-selling author of more than thirty-five novels, including the Cornhusker Dreams series and the Hidden Justice series.

Grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that altered her life, ex-police officer and bestselling mystery author Erin Delaney finds solace in the tranquility of a cabin nestled deep in the Smoky Mountains. But her restful stay is shattered when cries pierce the night, hinting at a lurking presence haunting the woods. When local police chief Adrian Nightengale seeks her help with a carefully arranged murder scene, she is thrust back into the world of crime solving. As they delve into the investigation, Erin's intuition reveals chilling truths about the killer's motives and strategically perfected methods. Secret word: shattered

Joined by the enigmatic Kaely Quinn-Hunter, a former FBI behavioral analyst, Erin not only embarks on a quest to stop the merciless serial killer, but also confronts the revived ghosts of her past. In a race against time, Erin must defeat her own demons while outmaneuvering a cunning killer or risk becoming the next victim in this deadly game of cat and mouse.

Shattered Sanctuary is a clean, Christian, thrilling suspense novel set in the Smoky Mountains, full of police investigations, haunted woods, eerie threats, and ominous evidence. For fans of high-stakes suspense, Lynette Eason, and Elizabeth Goddard.

Vera's Review: In this the first of the Erin Delaney Mystery Series, we again meet profiler Kaley whose story was told in Nancy Mehl's previous enthralling "Kaley Quinn Series." Her profiler experiences have given direction and authority to former police woman, Erin Delaney, who whilst on PSTD leave wrote a highly successful book. Their work together has brought them to friendship, and this friendship has led to Kaley's counseling Erin during this difficult time.

They've decided to spend a week together in retreat in the beautiful Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. A bit off season, it has turned cold and a major snow storm is predicted. As they begin their, hopefully, restful week, a body is discovered near their isolated cabin.

As we meet the town of Sanctuary's residents and as we become privy to conversations between Erin and Kaley, we find individuals just like the personages in your own hometown.

Erin is a non-believer and a troubled soul beset with remorse and guilt. Kaley is a strong Christian and she shares her faith but isn't pushy. She only desires that Erin find peace of soul and mind.

Who is the culprit? Who amongst the nice folks they've met might be the guilty person? Or is it someone else?

Nancy Mehl has started us off on another series that promises tangled webs and believable characters.

WHISPERS OF FORTUNE (Golden State Treasure #1) by Mary Connealy [Review]

My thoughts:  I always delight when a new "Mary Connealy" book comes off the press. Her books are set in the mid to far west of the United States during the early years the area was being settled. Connealy has a terrific sense of infusing her stories with light-hearted wit that brightens the reader's day.

In the first book of the "Golden State Treasure" series, Whispers of Fortune recounts the heart breaking stories prevalent of the period when back East families fell into the throes of poverty, children orphaned and sent West by orphanages to settle with other families, and mean-hearted culprits intent on illegal means to gain riches.

In Whispers of Fortune, the author weaves well loved characters of a prior series into the background as supporting cast. They are connected family with the owners of the Hart Ranch where much of Whispers of Fortune takes place.

I love the characters in this story and they are well developed by the author fleshed out so that you feel you know them yourself. Strong minded, well educated Brody is searching for his two missing younger brothers. I found the two younger boys (older teens actually) loveable and admirable for their ability to make their way from East to West in pursuit of an old dream of their deceased father and grandfather.

I look forward to reading more in this series and following new characters Mary Connealy has deftly woven into this book.

About the book: In 1875 California, Brody MacKenzie arrives at Two Hearts Ranch on a mission to find his runaway brothers, worried they may have fallen into harm. Instead, he finds them thriving at the ranch's school and orphanage under the care of Ellie Hart, a woman with a heart as resilient as the land she calls home. His own options limited, Brody reluctantly takes on the role of the ranch's doctor, and he forms an unexpected bond with Ellie, who's kept a steady eye on Brody's two rapscallion brothers. When the boys show him a mysterious journal that has been guiding their travels and may hold the key to a lost treasure, Brody and Ellie are captivated by the possibility of a thrilling adventure.

With winter approaching and his brothers threatening to bolt again, Brody and Ellie race against time to decipher cryptic clues and unearth the hidden fortune. But along the way, old adversaries resurface, threatening their newfound affection and the safety of the ranch.

In her exhilarating series starter, Mary Connealy weaves an exciting adventure of courage, danger, and love in the Wild West.

Grandma Ruth Doesn't Go to Funerals by Sharon J. Mondragón (Kregel Books)

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Grandma Ruth Doesn’t Go To Funerals by Sharon Mondragon hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Something is brewing in Raeburne's Ferry, Georgia—and it's not sweet tea.

ISBN: 9780825448683
Paperback $16.99
Kregel Publications

My thoughts: If you've not read a Sharon J. Mondragon book, you've missed a light-hearted, joyful read. In Grandma Ruth Doesn't Go to Funerals we journey into the heart of a vibrant Georgia community replete with gregarious, "news" sharing (think gossipers) ladies. Death has visited the community and granddaughter Sarah is the designated funeral-goer for bedridden Grandma (that's so she can bring back all the tidbits of who, what, when, how, and how much of all the goings on).

Throw into this delightful mishmash, a terse death bed statement and the investigation of a bygone scandal is set in motion.

I thoroughly enjoyed each of the characters and the author captures their personalities beautifully. I can just "feel" the tensions as folks encounter one another in this did-she did-he story. And she even gives the readers a glimpse into the world of Georgia during an ice storm. (Only a Southerner can truly appreciate the fear and tension of a deep-South ice storm!)

I say this is a delightful read and will surely bring joy and chuckles to one's heart.

About the book: In a small town where gossip flows, bedridden Mary Ruth McCready reigns supreme, doling out wisdom and meddling in everyone's business with a fervor that would make a matchmaker blush. When her best friend has her world rocked by a scandalous revelation from her dying husband, Mary Ruth kicks into high gear, commandeering the help of her favorite granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth, in tracking down the truth. Finding clues in funeral condolence cards and decades-old gossip dredged up at the Blue Moon Beauty Emporium, the two stir up trouble faster than you can say "pecan pie."

But just when things are starting to look up, a blast from the past waltzes in with an outrageous claim. But as Grandma Ruth always says when things get tough, "God is too big." With him, nothing is impossible—even bringing long-held secrets to light. Grandma Ruth and Sarah just might have to ruffle a whole mess of feathers to do it.
"Mondragón masterfully weaves a heartwarming tale of love, loss, and the enduring power of truth." —Kate Angelo, best-selling romantic suspense author
Author: Sharon J. Mondragón is a Southern girl at heart, having spent most of her adult life where tea is sweet and mac and cheese is a vegetable. Settled in Midlothian, Texas, she writes, facilitates the prayer shawl ministry at her church, and teaches at the local yarn shop. She's the author of the Purls and Prayers series, and her work has earned recognition from The Saturday Evening Post, ACFW, Foreword INDIES, and the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference. Find her at sharonjmondragon.com.

Excerpt.... It’s not that she gets squeamish or weak-kneed at the sight of a friend or relative laid out. She takes an avid interest in every detail of the deceased, from the tie they put on third cousin twice removed Billy Ray to how Harriet Tilson’s hair turned out. Nor is it that she lacks respect for those who have gone on to glory before her. Grandma Ruth is the kind of person to whom you do not criticize your mother. And it’s not that she prefers to stay at home and watch Jeopardy! Instead. Grandma Ruth is bedridden—has been for the past three years. Much as she would like to, Grandma Ruth isn’t going anywhere.

I am Sarah Elizabeth, Grandma Ruth’s favorite granddaughter. Being her favorite is a dubious honor. It means I’m her favorite to go to the store and buy birthday cards, visit her shut-in friends, and, you guessed it, attend funerals in her place.

Looking back, I realize I’ve been training for funeral duty for quite a while. When I was ten, she taught me how to make macaroni and cheese from scratch to take by the home of the bereaved for the reception. By the time I was eleven, I had learned to write a tasteful and heartfelt condolence note. I attended my first funeral at twelve. (Grandma Ruth wanted to take me sooner, but Mama put her foot down and prevailed for once.) Now that I’m twenty-four, Grandma Ruth considers me not only fully qualified but socially obligated to take her place since she can’t get out anymore. I don’t think I’ve missed a single funeral in Raeburne’s Ferry, Georgia, since she took to her bed.

My thoughts:
While this story is authored by a Christian author and published by a Christian publishing house it is not heavy on church, Bible, and Christianity. It is a very clean read with romance overtones. The story is a mystery and filled with suspense.

Set in Tennessee the story follows a political campaign, a town with long term and deep seated bitterness and hatred over the imminent domain seizure of land for building a dam, and several mysterious deaths that may or may not be linked to this unease and bitterness. Local law enforcement is joined by a representative of the TBI (Tennessee Bureau of Investigation) for protection of the campaigning politician and soon they're all involved in seeing if the deaths were murders and if they are connected to politics or the long term bitterness.

The pace is somewhat slow, but that's ok as sometimes it takes awhile to flesh out the characters, story line, and for the bits and pieces of the story to be revealed. Patricia Bradley has written another good suspense to engage readers.

About the book: Deputy Jenna Hart has only been working in her sleepy hometown of Pearl Springs for seven months when city officials begin to be targeted by a killer. Twenty years ago, the construction of a dam caused people to lose their land to eminent domain. That wound has not healed with time, and someone bearing a grudge is clearly set on revenge. With the former mayor of Pearl Springs now running for the US Senate, Jenna will have to call in backup to ensure his protection.

That's where Agent Maxwell Anderson comes in. He and Jenna used to work together in the Chattanooga Police Department, and there was even a smoldering fire of attraction. Now they team up to track down the killer before a big political rally that promises to bring not only the former mayor into the crosshairs but hundreds of civilians as well.

As the sparks of romance reignite and the threads of the investigation get tangled when another suspect comes into play, Jenna and Max will have to draw on all of their skills to stay alive and prevent the wave of disaster poised to hit the community of Pearl Springs. The question is, can either of them fully trust that the other has their back?

Never Forgotten by Hannah Linder from Barbour Publishing

ISBN: 9781636098371
Paperback $15.99 | USA

My thoughts:
Set in the early 1800s, this story captured my attention and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I was amazed at the development of the characters and grew to enjoy each one's individual traits whether they were likeable or not.

The story is one of English upper class families where the fathers promise their sons and daughters in marriage at an early age. But when the young adults decide to resist and give up major inheritances rather than follow the arranged marriage and guided life, the story and their lives take a very different path.

The author, Hannah Linder, keeps the reader on edge while the story goes from one tangled episode to another with unexpected characters revealing unspeakable deeds. There are sweet moments when delightful children (who will win the reader's heart) garner the attention and story line. The story is not all sweetness and English gentleness. There are dastardly deeds done by detestable unknowns.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it.

About the Book: All He Wanted was Justice. All She Wanted was His Heart.

Georgina Whitmore, not accustomed to any man being unaffected by her charms, is plagued with the disappearance and rejection of Simon Fancourt. Twelve years later, Mr. Fancourt returns to British society with two children and a mad hunger for justice.

Racing against time, Simon works to uncover the men responsible for his wife’s horrific murder, protect his children, and fulfill his father’s unexpected will by marrying Georgina—the last thing in the world he wants to do.

Though her heart throbs to accept, she would rather lose him again than have his name without his love. She denies his proposal of matrimony, knowing it will cost them both. But as tragedies unravel and secret enemies narrow their sights on Simon, Georgina risks her life—and her reputation—to protect him and the children. Will the danger scorch them alive? Or will it, for the first time, open his heart to her?

Unexpected Witness (Mountain Justice Book 1) by Penny Zeller [Giveaway]

My thoughts:  Author, Penny Zeller never disappoints with her stories are thoroughly fleshed out and always squeaky clean and uplifting. I've read her contemporary fiction but mostly her historical fiction, so I really wondered about her venturing into the genre of contemporary suspense. But again, Penny has not disappointed.

Set in a small mountain community, the story opens just as the local medical clinic is closing for the day and the nurse closes the clinic and walks to her parked car. She witnesses a ghastly murder and the story gets off to a fast paced start. Terrifying experiences leap from the pages as our witness, Mila, is repeatedly in dangerous, life threatening situations.

You'll love the characters from strong men who protect and serve to a sweet grandmother and an enchanting child that will warm your heart. The danger is there lurking in the shadows.

I thoroughly enjoy this story and am looking forward to the next in the series Unexpected Danger.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

About the book: If she can identify one person, she could bring down an entire crime network.

Nurse Mila Casey did not expect to witness a murder in the clinic’s parking lot. Nor did she imagine seeking protection from the at-large killer would land her on a secluded ranch owned by handsome, but standoffish, Roarke Brenneman.

Mila finds herself in the center of ever-growing danger as the police are unable to locate the suspect. When the protection of the ranch is compromised and Mila’s location is discovered, can she, with Roarke’s aid, stay one step ahead of a crazed murderer who intends to silence her forever?

**Please note: Unexpected Witness is a faith-filled Christian romantic suspense novel.** Secret word: justice

Into the Sunset (A Western Light #3) by Mary Connealy [Giveaway]

A Historical Western Romance
Set in 1800's Cheyenne, Wyoming

ISBN-978-0764242670
Bethany House Pub.
Will the sun set on their chance at happiness before they can seize it?

To finally escape the clutches of her controlling husband and the threat of being recommitted to an asylum, Ginny Rutledge enlists the help of her friends, Maeve O'Toole and Dakota Harlan. Fleeing their own tumultuous pasts, the group embarks on a journey to prove Ginny's sanity. However, as they confront the shadows they wish they could forget, danger looms from unexpected places.

Maeve grapples with her mother's impending remarriage and seizes a rare chance to escape her homestead--but that means reuniting with Dakota, the man she holds responsible for her father's death, who is caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful family. As the two of them navigate their shared history and a dangerous mission, Dakota is forced to confront his deepest fears and fight for the woman who has unwittingly captured his heart. Secret word: mental

In this action-packed series finale, Mary Connealy delivers a riveting tale of danger, romance, and second chances on the Western frontier.

My review: As the conclusion to the "The Western Light" series, the author wrapped up the saga of societies' abuse of women, and how the new State of Wyoming valued women and didn't tolerate abuse of women. This played well into the story of the main character, Ginny, whose husband had her committed to an abusive insane asylum simply because she wouldn't turn over to him her daughter's inherited  money.

While during that period of history, women's property typically became her husband's upon marriage, Ginny's daughter's inherited money from a grandparent could not be controlled by her father.

In previous books in the series, the two ladies travel West to escape the clutches of the father, and in the story Into the Sunset, they eventually and permanently escape his reach.

Typical of the author's comedic style of writing romance and action, this book provided light reading, fun, and some good old fashioned "rooting for the underdog" escapism. Typical also, was the author's exposing the reader to historic truth about the settling of the Western United States.

I thoroughly enjoyed peeks into the lives of previous series' characters and how they continue their lives and interact in the current story. I remember them, but new readers won't have a problem with their story-interaction.

I recommend this sweet romantic and light hearted Christian story.
