Children's Sparkly Sticker Books from Kregel Publishing are fabulous gifts [Review & Giveaway]

Looking for quality entertainment that teaches little kids about the Bible in a fun, interactive way (even "sparkly") for colder weather "inside time" or for Christmas gifting? Kregel Publishing has an assortment of "Sparkly Sticker Books" perfect for this.

I have never seen a child that doesn't love stickers and glitter. Combine this with learning about the Bible and combining hands on play/education parents have a win-win fun activity for their youngster.

Pros:
  • These "sparkly" sticker books don't "shed" the glittery stuff the way most glitter sheds. Just love this aspect, too.
  • The illustrations are charming, fun, attention garnering. The text of the story is simply stated and not overly long for youngsters.
  • Bible stories come to life at their fingertips.
  • Talk about the story and what it means to be children of God.
  • The book also includes references for all eight story spreads, and words for each of the seventy-five stickers.
I absolutely love these sticker books and encourage you to purchase one, two, or more for children you love.

More books on birds from Eerdmans Books for Young Readers

Birds are fascinating. Birds are beautiful. Birds eat insects that are pests. And here on the cusps of Fall and the promise of cooler and colder temperatures, they mass migrate. Watch the birds in your backyard, on the school playground, and on the ledges of buildings in cities. Be thankful for birds.

CONSIDER THE BIRDS by Jennifer Grant & illustrated by Julianna Swaney

ISBN: 9780802855626
Eerdmans Young Readers

My thoughts:
Beautiful illustrations gently bring life to the tender, descriptive text that characterizes each bird and what the bird is doing. There is such a sweetness to the pictures and words. The bold, bossy Bluejay; the loving Morning Doves; the skittish Chickadees; and the tiny, brave Wrens. The beautiful book layout with the gentle illustrations is sheer loveliness.

A bit of information about each bird's habit or traits. A bit of counting opportunities, though this isn't a "counting book." A suggestion to "Consider" the birds and how God cares for them. A wrap up that "God loves you....."

Truly a precious book.

About the book:  Book 1 of the Consider series, a new picture book series celebrating nature and inviting gratitude.

On a spring day at the birdfeeder, ONE blue jay dives down from way up high, shouting: “Eat! Eat! Eat!” TWO mourning doves scout for seeds on the ground. Next to swoop in are THREE tiny black-capped chickadees, ready for a quick bite. Then we spot FOUR little wrens in a tree—joined by a cardinal to make FIVE. Come count these birds with me!

This lyrical book is a gentle invitation to discover the wonders of nature and the love of God. Jennifer Grant’s simple text and Julianna Swaney’s endearing art will encourage readers to slow down and marvel at the amazing world around them.

Fly Like a Bird (Spectacular STEAM for Curious Readers (SSCR)) by Olga Ptashnik

ISBN: 9780802856456
Eerdmans Young Readers

My thoughts:
We have a young Chickadee worried about being able to fly. It's almost time to "wing it" but he's afraid he won't be able to. Hence, the beginning conversation between the little Chickadee and an older one (mother or father bird?).

The way a variety of different birds are able to fly and how fast, high, lots of wing action, little wing action, or even not flying at all is brought to light; and the little Chickadee responds with the realization that it wouldn't work for him and how about something else.

Ultimately, do decides to try and finds that his wings work just fine and he's flying.

This is a different type of educational picture book that works, though I'm not particularly fond of it. The illustrations are adequate to pair with the text though the style is not a style I favor. All-in-all, a good book for libraries and I am sure many will love it.

About the book: A playful tour through the flight patterns of pelicans, peregrine falcons, and other incredible birds.

“What if I never learn to fly?” a baby chickadee asks. “You will when the time comes!” an adult answers. “Let me tell you about how our friends fly.” Will the chick fly like a hummingbird—moving its wings at top speed and sipping nectar from flowers? Will it fly like an Andean condor—using air streams to soar through the mountains? Will it fly like a penguin—flapping its wings like fins underwater? Maybe this tiny chickadee can find its own way to fly.

With vibrant illustrations and incredible facts about each feathered friend, Fly Like a Bird is a thrilling introduction to life on the wing. This warm, conversational book is perfect for nature lovers, aspiring birdwatchers, and anyone who’s ever wondered how to soar into the future.

When I Hear Spirituals by Cheryl Willis Hudson & illustrated by London Ladd [Review]

When I Hear Spirituals by Cheryl Willis Hudson & illustrated by London Ladd

Holiday House Publications
ISBN: 9780823453801
Hardcover $18.99

My thoughts:
Having been raised as a Southern white girl, I remember many of these songs. Spirituals. Soulful songs. I remember learning a little of the history behind some of them. Perhaps some will say it is wrong for a southern white child to learn to sing these spirituals so steeped with African American history. But we did sing them in school. No one made fun of them. No one talked ill about them. They were sung in music class as a means of teaching us a form of music whose epic history belonged to the South and a part of history with which we should be acquainted.

As I grew older, I learned more of the history and the people connected to this music and sorrow filled my own being to think of their sadness and pain and suffering. I was glad, though, that they had a spiritual connection to the God who could deliver them from their sorrows.

This book is a treasure to teach children of all races about the music that encouraged and brought a whisper of hope to those who sang it. There is a darkness in the book through the visual art and that is good because that was a dark period in history and there was darkness hovering over the African Americans. But in this darkness they sang of the undergirding strength they found in their faith as their spirits connected to God.

Libraries need this book.

About the book: Your spirit will soar! A girl connects with heritage, history, and a higher power through the lyrics of twelve beloved spirituals and four seminal events in African American history.

A beautiful keepsake to be shared by multiple generations.

When I hear spirituals
Sometimes
A big, full feeling
Grows in my chest . . .

Her heart pounds, she gets a lump in her throat, and tears flow down her cheeks. She wants to clap her hands and stomp her feet. There is healing, tenderness, strength, pride, and above all, hope.

The author of the classic picture book Bright Eyes, Brown Skin, Cheryl Willis Hudson, has woven together lyrics of twelve timeless, Black spirituals with a moving exploration of how music holds memories, emotions, and empowerment.

Songs include “Go down, Moses,” “Nobody Knows the Troubles I See,” “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” “Rock-a-My Soul,” “Get on Board, Little Children,” and more.

Evocative illustrations by award-winning artist London Ladd depict important people and places in Black history and culture: Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Great Migration, and the Enslaved People’s Uprising of 1811.

Journey through Black history and music in this layered picture book.

The Crane and the Keeper: How an Endangered Crane Chose a Human as Her Mate by Meeg Pincus & illustrated by Gillian Eilidh O’Mara [review]

The Crane and the Keeper (ages 4 - 8)

ISBN: 9781536232363
Hardcover $18.99 USA
Smithsonian Kids
Candlewick Entertainment

My thoughts:
An interesting true story about an endangered species female crane whose name is "Walnut" that is isolated from her peers and fails to manage to imprint adequately on the cranes to enable her to mate and reproduce. This is sad because her being able to reproduce will provide more varied dna in the remaining cranes to enable healthy reproduction.

She sadly imprints on a young man who is a crane keeper. He is innovative in his care and develops a way to help her. She ultimately begins to raise her own young and so enables the cranes to survive.

A well written text that is gently illustrated  will provide entertaining education demonstrating the need for humans to intercede when necessary but to avoid imprinting on young animals (or birds).

I found it interesting that this particular crane lived to be 42 years old and Chris Crow, her "crane keeper," was her care taker the entire time.

Note: A Junior Library Guild Selection.

About the book: The true story, widely reported on social and in print media, of a white-naped crane who saw her human keeper as her mate—forging a remarkable connection that might just save a species

What was wrong with Walnut? The white-naped crane was friendly and curious—except when it came to other cranes. Raised by humans, Walnut didn’t see herself as a bird and could not live peacefully—or breed—with others of her species. Rejected by several zoos, she arrived at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo Conservation Biology Institute. Would this be her last chance? Meanwhile, Chris Crowe had also just arrived at the zoo, as crane keeper. It was his job to care for and help breed the birds at the institute. It was clear that breeding Walnut wasn’t going to be easy, but with skill and patience, Chris slowly earned the crane’s trust, and an extraordinary partnership evolved. In a Smithsonian Kids picture book sure to appeal to wildlife fans—and anyone who appreciates a unique unlikely friendship tale—award-winning author Meeg Pincus shares the story of the incredible bond between a crane and her keeper.

Kingdoms of Life (Spectacular STEAM for Curious Readers (SSCR)) by Carly Allen-Fletcher [Review & Giveaway]

Kingdoms of Life (Spectacular STEAM for Curious Readers (SSCR)) by Carly Allen-Fletcher

Ages 6 - 10 Years
Eerdmans Young Readers
Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 9780802855916

My thoughts:
This is definitely more than a children's picture book of life forms. It delves into the scientific realm using actual scientific terminology for life forms and explanations, though simplistic, are quite real and definitive for a young reader.

Definitely a STEAM book. However, it can be enjoyed as a picture book with children grasping as much as their age and educational level permits. Or as much as adult leadership can help them assimilate.

School libraries need this. Elementary classroom libraries (book shelves) need this. Elementary and early Middle School science classrooms need this. Homeschools need this.

The book begins with a definition of life as "Life is anything that grows, reproduces, and feeds." Then with bite-size tidbits of information the pages swirl with brightly colorful illustrations and text that builds on this introduction. Then life is broken into six categories: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists, Bacteria, and Archaea. Then each of these is explored more deeply.

The illustrations are vivid, bright, well done. Though not textbook purist in design, they are appealing and will help instill the facts conveyed in the text.

About the book: "Vivid examples . . . plenty of thought-provoking surprises." — The Wall Street Journal

An awe-inspiring journey through the kingdoms of animals, plants, protists, fungi, archaea, and bacteria.

Life is all around us—in millions of different forms! In this spectacular book, Carly Allen-Fletcher invites children on an amazing tour of scientific classification’s six kingdoms of life. Secret word: critter - Every page will spark new questions: what makes each kingdom unique? Where do scientists place camels, baobabs, seaweed, and bread molds? How about the tiny things wriggling under our microscopes? What weird and wonderful life-forms have been discovered in the geysers of Yellowstone and on the seafloors off the coast of Namibia?

Exploding with bright colors and mind-boggling details, Kingdoms of Life presents the kaleidoscopic beauty of life on our planet. This fascinating book is the perfect introduction to how the science of classification helps us explore and understand the wonders of nature.

The Open Bible - NKJV: A Trusted Guide to Deepen Your Faith Journey (From Nelson Bibles)

The Open Bible: A Trusted Guide to Deepen Your Faith Journey 📖✨

My thoughts: Selection of a Bible should begin with a version you understand and reverence. The "version" is not holy but what it says carries the weight of the Word of God. My preferred version to read is one I've used throughout my life - the King James Version. Today, we are looking at the New King James Version which is very close in language to the KJV. Once you have selected the version you wish to read, the next choice is readability - the size and style of the font, how it feels in your hands, how well it lays open, and integrity of study materials that have been added.

You must carefully select according to faithful interpretation of the Word of God lest your Bible include false interpretation.

The Open Bible in the NKJV printed by the Thomas Nelson Bible Publishing company is a Bible you can trust. It is beautifully printed in readable type font size 9.5 (not a true "large print" but quite readable). Though a large Bible, it feels good in hand and opens well laying flat for ease in study.

Study aids included such as the Extensive Topical Index are highly beneficial in following a trail of study or locating specific material. I like that the Topical Index has been placed in the front of the printed material rather than at the back. The Concordance is thorough and always a big aid in study and reference.

Visual materials - The Visual Survey of the Bible is the most easily understood I have ever seen. Clearly presenting a visual history and time frame of people and events encompassed in the Bible narrative. The selection of maps (There is even a map index.) is beautiful and classified or documented uniquely to period or episodic.

Experience The Open Bible: A beautifully designed Bible with study tools & a trusted reference system, perfect for exploring Scripture and deepening faith.

My thoughts:
This is a delightfully charming non-fiction book that is designed to invoke a desire to learn about the natural world of the forest. The book is heavy on text so will necessitate adult guidance and reading. The book is a grand addition to science class or school libraries, and perfect for families that love nature.

My thoughts:
This is such a treasure of a book. Each alphabet page is beautifully illustrated and will entice children to visually explore the details facilitating impacting their mind with items and ideas that use that specific letter of the English alphabet. Liberal use of deeper pastel shades of the color wheel are artistically splashed across the pages.

This unique ABC book provides guidance and opportunity for parents to assist their young children to comprehend big ideas and deeper theological understanding to young minds.

I love this beautiful book and encourage families to make sure they have and use it with their children. I purchased a copy and gifted it to a young family and they love it.

About the book: Excite kids about how great it is to be a Christian with this beautifully illustrated treasury of theological truths.

Going from A to Z, kids will learn about the amazing things that are true of us if we know Christ. For example:
  • A is for Adoption - we are children of God, part of his beloved family.

Some of 2024's Best Kid's books from Candlewick Press [Reviews & Giveaway]

The Last Zookeeper by Aaron Becker

ISBN: 9781536227680

My thoughts:
Aaron Becker is the "pro" or "go-to" wordless book author and an artist whose work is always a delight to gaze upon and peruse its intricate detail. In The Last Zookeeper he delves into a futuristic world where the Earth is inundated by flood waters with humanity and the animal kingdom at peril of extinction.

To the rescue is NOA (a futuristic nod to the Biblical account of Noah and the world wide flood) a huge robot who seems to have its power from wind turbines and solar panels. A story told by highly detailed, beautifully drawn and colored pictures relates a world seemingly inhabited only with animals and only a single huge robot - and not a single human - remaining as the world floods. Kind hearted NOA builds a boat (an ark?) and helps the animals onto it. A further storm causes more problems. As they become shipwrecked, a sweet ending emerges in the story and a bright future awaits.

What I don't like about the book...... It is a "take" on a Biblical story that I hold dear as I do all of the Bible. The world seems to have no humans and only a robot can save the world. Question is who keeps the robot in repair, programed, etc.

What I do like about the book..... As with other Aaron Becker books, this provides the child the opportunity to closely and in-depth peruse the illustrations to find the story and expand on the story to his or her heart's content. Also, I love Becker's illustrations and choices of colors.

About the book: A master of the wordless form imagines a futuristic Noah’s Ark in a luminous sci-fi parable for our changing world.

Look closely. NOA the robot is huge. He scoops up animals and lifts them
onto boats, islands, hot-air-balloons, rescuing them from the flood.

The Earth has flooded. The only signs of humankind are the waterlogged structures they left behind. Peeking out from the deluge are the remnants of a zoo, home to rare and endangered animals, survivors of long neglect. Tender-hearted NOA is a construction robot who’s found new purpose as the caretaker of the zoo’s beleaguered inhabitants. Bracing for the next storm, NOA builds an ark from the wreckage in search of new land and a new home, only to discover something even more profound. With boundless compassion and sweeping scenes of sea and sky punctuated by detailed wordless panels to pore over, Caldecott Honor–winning creator Aaron Becker delivers a timely and concrete message about the rewards of caring in even the most difficult of times that is sure to inspire the dreamers among us. Secret word: compassion

They Call Me Teach: Lessons in Freedom by Lesa Cline-Ransome & illustrated by James E. Ransome

ISBN: 9780763681555

My thoughts:
An evocatively illustrated picture book that tells the sad, yet uplifting, story of a young slave who had learned to read while a companion of a young son of the Master's. Later when the son was sent to school and the slave a young man, the slave was allowed to use his reading and math skills while working in Master's store. But he was not permitted to read, write, and or do math outside the store without severe personal ramifications.

Nevertheless, he slipped around and found moments he could help by teaching his fellow slaves to read a little.

A sad story. An encouraging story. A story of seeking and finding a way to freedom.

About the book: In this stirring and powerfully illustrated story, an enslaved young man uses his ability to read and write to educate others in the pursuit of freedom.

Back inside the store
I write up receipts
for Master’s deliveries
for Master’s orders
In ’tween
I write up a receipt
for her freedom

The young man known as Teach secretly learned to read, write, and use numbers growing up alongside the master’s son. And although on this Southern plantation these are skills he can never flaunt, Teach doesn’t keep them to himself: In the course of a week, he’ll teach little ones the alphabet in the corner stall of a stable and hold a moonlit session where men scratch letters in the dirt. He’ll decipher a discarded letter bearing news of Yankee soldiers and forge a pass for a woman hoping to buy precious time on a perilous journey north. And come Sunday, Teach will cross the swamp to a hidden cabin, reading aloud to the congregation God’s immortal words to the pharaoh: Let my people go. With a spare, moving first-person narration told in an era-appropriate dialect, complemented by stunning watercolor illustrations, the celebrated duo of Lesa Cline-Ransome and James E. Ransome honor the bravery and generosity of spirit behind countless untold acts of resistance during the time of slavery. An author’s note highlights the vital role of literacy and education toward the securing of freedom, both historically and to the present day.

Beti and the Little Round House by Atinuke & illustrated by Emily Hughes

ISBN: 9781536225181

My thoughts:
This is a charming book that will bring joy just by looking at it. Just the right size book. Text is printed appropriately sized and spaced for ease of reading. And there is an abundant of sweet illustrations scattered throughout - some are small black and white while some are full page and in beautiful color. There is exquisite detail showing the woods with trees, plants, and flowers beautifully enveloping the little round house that Beti and her Mam, Tad, and baby sibling live in.

They seem to live quite a rustic life even keeping the milk cooling in the stream. A bit of an off-the-grid type of existence.

The story is portioned into four chapters and each takes place in a season - Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. Beti's life on a day-to-day basis and encounters with her family, her friends, and mama Goat and baby goat, "Naughty," are very nicely told in middle-grade level understanding and vocabulary. Pleasant. Charming. Delightful.

About the book: From beloved storyteller Atinuke comes an enchanting new collection of stories featuring an endearing new character.

Beti lives in a little round house in the green woods under the mountains with Mam, Tad, baby Jac, and her very own tiny goat named Naughty. Beti loves the little round house, where there is always the promise of adventure with Naughty, Jac, and her friends—whatever the season! With charming black-and-white and color illustrations throughout, this warm and lyrical collection is alive with themes of endurance, friendship, and the power of self-belief. It celebrates the gift of the seasons and the art of living simply and joyfully in nature.

The CSB Grace Bible for Kids from B&H Publishing [Review & Giveaway]

Don’t let dyslexia stop you from experiencing God’s Word.

ISBN: 9798384510840
Leather touch $44.95
B&H Publishing

My thoughts:
From the moment I opened this children's (tweens & teens) Bible I was very impressed with the sense of availability, ease-on-eyes, readability of the text.  This puts this edition in the far front of choices in my opinion. If hard to read text confronts the young reader from the first moment, it's a turn-off. But if you make it doable, workable, comfortable then the reader will automatically engage more readily.

My review copy is a soft cover leather-touch that is flexible and very comfortable in the hands. Large, but not over-large and not heavy. Again, workable, comfortable from the outset.

While my preferred version is the KJV, this CSB is certainly acceptable amongst leaders and young folks probably will engage with it more readily.

Now about some of the features that specifically benefit dyslexic readers (or even some who just need a bit of help with their reading). I found this article (click here) and it is quite interesting on the use of color overlays when reading. Basically the article's author endorses the benefit of using tinted sheets of plastic over the text when reading to enhance the reader's comprehension and skill at reading.

Tinted plastic overlay sheets.

Highly readable text.
Short lines.
Short paragraphs.

To further help dyslexic readers is the type of font that was developed by academics and used in this CSB Grace Bible for Kids (Dyslexic Friendly). Furthermore, the font was weighted on the bottom to help readers visually stabilize the text on the page. Comfort of visualizing text and stabilizing the text visually on the page are key to helping dyslexic readers.

As I said at the beginning, this particular printing was created specifically to help readers who struggle with dyslexia. However, I see nothing that gives the appearance that it is "different" so therefore there is no constraint about differences when using. It looks quite like the kid's next to you who has a different Bible. This one, though, has subtle helps that enrich the child's use.

Frankly, I think even an adult can benefit from using this edition of the CSB Bible (except it does say "kids" on the cover).

Also included are interesting study maps that are colorful and map out highlighted eras or lives of the people in the Bible. I always found these helpful to cement the Biblical history and text in my mind.

Several colorful maps to aid Bible study.

Calculating Chimpanzees, Brainy Bees etc + Wildlife Crossings - non-fiction gems with fascinating animal facts [Review & Giveaway]

Calculating Chimpanzees, Brainy Bees, and Other Animals with Mind-Blowing Mathematical Abilities  by Stephanie Gibeault, illustrated by Jaclyn Sinquett | Ages 9 to 12

My thoughts:
This book is from MIT KIDS PRESS, so you know it's going to be heavy and "spot-on" right on its science and math. Got a budding mathematician or brainiac in your family? This is a got-to-have non-fiction for the kiddies.

It's not short on words! It spells it all out in mathematical mind-blowing "factuary" wordy glory. And to make it more fun, it involves animals and other critters. We've know scientists have been working with chimpanzees to discover their intellectual capabilities. Now we can see more astounding information about how various critters think.

The chapters take a look at studies being conducted to discover what, if any, mathematical abilities or understanding of math concepts the various species exibit capabilities. There seem to be indicative results that purport that some do possess the ability to conceptualize a counting system.

As an individual who is not at all skilled mathematically, the concept of animals being able to reason and use concepts of math is humbling.

This book belongs in the homes of any child that is gifted mathematically and most certainly in classrooms and school libraries.

About the book: Could your pet help you with your math homework? Discover how amazing animals use number sense in this fun and fact-filled investigation.

Animals know a lot more about numbers than you might think. Guppies can tell large numbers from small ones, hyenas can count, and chimpanzees can use Arabic numerals! Readers will get to know these extraordinary animals and more—and how scientists study their number sense. Secret word - smart. Each chapter wraps up with an interview with a researcher and a hands-on activity that give readers the chance to challenge their own math skills. Illustrations brimming with personality, along with colorful photos, sidebars, and splashy facts, make for an entertaining delve into these fascinating studies in this second book in the Extraordinary Animals series. A bibliography as well as an “Add to Your Knowledge” section at the back encourage more discovery.

Wildlife Crossings: Protecting Animal Pathways Around the World by Catherine Barr, illustrated by  Christiane Engel | Ages 5 to 9

My thoughts:
An interesting and nicely designed look at seven types of wildlife and how their natural ancestral pathways has been impacted by human civilization. Looking at the issue, the author and illustrator specifically look at seven types of wildlife from aquatic, terrane, and air. After identifying the wildlife and the location on Earth, the natural ancestral pathways are looked at and how the wildlife reacts to human interference. Then a look at what mankind is doing to restore the natural habitat pathways wandering wildlife need in order to exist with as little impact as possible on wildlife and mankind.

Four pages of information detail the type of wildlife and locale it which it lives. Then how the problem is specifically addressed to support life for critter and man. A fun detail is search and count.

Pages are packed with nuggets of information in short paragraphs and sentences. This makes for "not-a-textbook" style learning and allows readers to peruse entirety of illustrations and text in discovery mode.

A good addition to science class libraries or classroom libraries.

Wildlife tend to trample through villages on old pathways. (This page
has a "can you find" task.)

About the book: How have we prevented wild animals from accessing the pathways they need to survive? A look at seven species that humans have put at risk and are now trying to help.

From the cocreators of Water: How We Can Protect Our Freshwater comes a compelling picture book about threatened animal species around the world, among them elephants, hedgehogs, spoon-billed sandpipers, gibbons, salmon, grizzly bears, and cougars. Discover how the infringement of humans into these creatures’ habitats has cut them off from vital pathways and put them at risk, then find out how people are helping them by reconnecting wildlands and waterways. Trace the animals’ tracks, understand their challenges, and explore their journeys to find food, water, and the mates they need to survive. With an engaging narrative and bold illustrations, this enlightening book offers an end note providing a brief overview of similar challenges and solutions involving six more international species.
