My thoughts:  If you thought from the title that this would be a book to educate parents or children using a variety of charts like bar charts, pie charts, graphs, line charts, you'd be mostly wrong. Sure it opens with a pie-chart but that is just a nifty way of giving you a sort-of Table of Contents. You see, Charts for Babies simply, and eloquently, and uniquely directs little one's thinking to relationships of size and content, to concepts and colors, to relationships of items and relationships with feelings.

You see, it's kind of a chart of the stuff of life. And it's a winner. Start your little ones thinking along these concepts, and you'll be giving them a head start on critical thinking, geometrics, mathematics, art in color, and simple feelings. And it is amazing that Ms. Rial has written the text in simple rhyme. Rhyme is always a plus, I think!

Parents will say, "Oh yea!" as they flip through these simple and point on pages. And, yes, the actual charts are shown at the back of the book. (Be sure you enter the giveaway below!)

My thoughts:  Children relish the idea of rain and playing out in the rain or the puddles after it has rained. Their getting out gives opportunity for learning about earthworms that appear after it rains, what's floating in the puddles, sense the freshness of the air, and the scent of the rain. Just the same, they can dip into the wealth of imagery that is tucked into the illustrations of After the Rain. They can see critters, worms, plants, fungi and discover what happens all around them in the world that exists "After the Rain."

Back pages give definitions and/or explanations of terms and ideas from the story and about the effect of rain on this world.

A nice book to add to one's STEM collection. MIT Kids Press is a strong printer for STEM products.

Spring and Summer is a wonderful time to introduce children to the habit of observation of birds. As birds leave their Winter homes and fly across the World to their Spring and Summer nesting grounds, the opportunity to see a rich variety of unusual birds presents itself. These two children's books introduce the child to the world of these beautiful and fantastic creatures.

My thoughts: Though designed and intended for the age 4 to 8 audience, Light as a Feather...  is a book that will captivate older readers - older children and even adults - alike. The illustrations are lovely and present attributes of each bird beautifully with text that adequately provides educational information on the specifics of each bird. These are North American birds so the book will appeal to folks North of the Equator in the Western Hemisphere.

A good amount of information is provided so readers can identify the birds included in this collection and  understand a bit about what they are like physically and in habit.

A sad note that I found throughout the book is the statement that "their populations have steadily decreased over time." Causation of this is probably removal of natural habitats - forests, etc. as well as climate change.

A must have book for the family that treasures our birds and wants their family to know about the different birds that might frequent their backyards.

Extreme Birdwatching: Measuring Change on a Galápagos Island (Discovery Chronicles) by Loree Griffin Burns & illustrated by Jamie Green

My thoughts:  Not a book for "back yard birding" but the content of the book will certainly appeal to serious "birders." On one of the unusual Galápagos islands, Daphne Island, a couple of scientists chronicle their study of the Daphne Finches.

Written in an easy flowing and very readable style, the information about the Galápagos Islands, particularly the island of Daphne will captivate readers. While the information in this little book is intended for ages 7 to 10 it will probably appeal to older youths and even adults. It recounts a  simplified version of the scientific study of these birds and the environment.

The illustrations are done in shades of blue which lends interest beyond the typical black and white or simple line drawings often seen in books for this age group. I found the illustrations adequate and serve the purpose of making a non-fiction book even more appealing for young readers. 

The generalized conclusion of the decades of study of the finches on Daphne Island is that natural selection is observable for study in the wild as is evolution based on conditions. 

This would be a nice book to include in a school or classroom library as well as public libraries. I think, too, that if a child is interested in studies such as this, that they would benefit by having their own copy of the book.

My thoughts: The extensive Maisy series of children's books are beloved by parents and children alike and they cover a wide range of interests. The "Maisy Planet" series of books provides little ones with exploration of the planet on which we live and the critters that abound here, too. In this cute board book, Maisy discovers butterflies.

A delightfully entertaining introduction to butterflies, moths, and caterpillars. Young children will learn what butterflies (and moths) need and a bit about the life cycle. The amount of information is pretty extensive for ages 1 to 3 but certainly within the scope of understanding and comprehension. The board book is not tiny yet not overlarge for young hands. The typical "Masiy" illustration style is attention grabbing for intended age group.

The "Maisy Planet" series is worth the investment for young families.

My thoughts:  This is a delightful, rollicking counting book that has colorful, rip-roaring dinosaurs playing a game. Usually my preference is to introduce dinosaurs when the child is older, perhaps five-plus; but this cute book simply has imaginative "osaurs" playing. So no harm in that.

It is imaginatively cute with a bit of rhyme as the count goes from one to ten.

Board books for toddlers using chemistry & physics terms & definitions - STEM from MIT Kids Press [Review & Giveaway]

The concept of these "science for tiny tots" board books is that of impressing very young minds with speech and information beyond the traditional level for their age with the assumption that their minds will grasp much of the information. I don't dispute the idea, but also believe that the fun and games language and thinking concept also appropriate.

Non-fiction STEM books look at birds, microscopic world, & outer space [Review & Giveaway]

Birds Everywhere by Britta Teckentrup | Ages 6-9

My thoughts:  While not my favorite book on birds, the book has some intriguing information that bird lovers will enjoy. This is not your typical "backyard birds" type of book. 

First some book "shortcomings" as I see them..... The digital illustrations leave much to be desired. An artist's hand and perceptive eye would have garnered more and better detail to bring life into the images. Then there is the text font and size. Much too small unless you are going for encyclopedic type of print jobs. So one's attention span might lapse because the font and size tire the reader. Then when the printer coupled the font and its size with colored backgrounds, they almost totally lost this reader.

My thoughts:  I was delighted to see that Louie Giglio has produced another book for youngsters that is faith based, mind stimulating, and with science activities that will expand their mental capacity and affirm their faith in God.

I previously reviewed several of Mr. Giglio's books and each time felt it a privilege to be involved in promoting his publications. He understands kids and knows his science. His faith shines through.

MILLIE LIU was born in sunny Pasadena, California, and has been drawing ever since she could hold a pencil. It did start with color pencils on walls but after some scolding, she decided paper was much better. She graduated from Otis College of Art and Design and went into the field of toy design shortly after, designing colorful toys for children the world over. My thoughts:  Essentially the story celebrates the ways and joys of celebrating one's birthday. It is uniquely one's own. This is a cheerful story of ways (vaguely presented) one celebrates a birthday.

Key to the whole book is that it is a day, it is your day, it is your birthday. So while some don't celebrate with cake, presents, recording one's height, or blowing out candles, one can look forward to and celebrate the day they are one year older.

Ada and the Galaxies by authors Alan Lightman & Olga Pastuchiv. Illustrated by Susanna Chapman

My thoughts:  Ada is certainly a precocious little girl, quite lively, inquisitive, and loveable. I love the interaction between Ada and her grandparents who live on an island in Maine. Ada goes to visit them and wants to see and learn about the stars. She can't see stars in the night sky in New York because of all the lights. Maine is different  and the opportunity will hopefully present itself.

The book is a product of MIT Press and is the first children's book by MIT Professor Alan Lightman who draws from his personal family background for this book. We are told numbers given in the book are accurate as is the assumption that there are "people" on planets in other galaxies. 

I realize this is a story for preschool and early elementary age children, but I truly expected more "star" and "galaxy" in the book. There are pictures taken from the Hubble space telescope camera which brings authenticity to the story. 

All-in-all, the book is charming, a delightful read for little ones, a grand multi-generational story, and a bit of science to whet one's interest.

My thoughts:  I absolutely love this biographic picture book. I knew women's roles during World War II were significant and important in a variety of fields. I had not heard of Beatrice Shilling and her achievements as an engineer.

This well written and enjoyable read coupled with the wonderful illustrations, will definitely encourage young readers to pursue reading about the accomplishments of real people doing really important things. And of course, the achievements of women in fields typically not attributed to women's accomplishments.

I highly endorse this book for public and school libraries as well as private collections.

My thoughts: I have a fascination with 3-dimensional puzzles though I have never attempted to work one. The "Build A Castle" activity kit is sort of an introduction to puzzles in 3-dimension. The concept is to use slotted cards instead of puzzle pieces. Sort of a cardboard building block concept.

  This is ideal for children to use their imagination to construct a castle and also to learn about the various parts of the castle and their importance during medieval times. This isn't something my hands and mind do well with, but kids love it. They can replicate the castle in the illustration or create their own design. During these days when it is best to stay-at-home during the Covid-19 pandemic, this would be great to occupy children's time. I don't think this is age appropriate for pre-kindergarten but likely fits for ages 5 to 8.

My thoughts: Beautifully packaged product is concise, organized. The individual pieces are sized so that they are safe for young children (nothing in the mouth to swallow) and the magnets enclosed. The pieces are bright and colorful engaging the visual senses. The shapes - hexacon, square, triangle, etc. - can be taught at an early age.

Best methodology for construction of shapes is to begin on a flat surface laying the pieces flat and then raising sides to meet. On the Facebook page - click here - you can see a video showing various shapes under construction.

I can easily recommend this toy as it appears to be high quality and clearly an entertaining educational toy. Grandmother approved!

It is great that Buzz Aldrin has collaborated with the folks at National Geographic Kids and produced this fascinatingly interactive book that touches on the magnificent event - Man's Landing and Stepping on the Moon - the Apollo 11 Adventure!

The book is beautifully made and the binding makes for easy opening and laying flat. Designed and written for kids age 8-12, it provides enough information to whet their interest and grabs their attention with the pop-ups. There is a separate sheet with punch-out shapes for the reader to create a Luna module providing hands on creativity.

The text is presented in bits and pieces or short paragraphs that interest rather than overwhelm the reader. The personal touch of Aldrin and his family lend connection and realism to the information being presented in the book

Understanding what they can see or what they can hear and even how to bathe Fido rank high on the scale of loving and caring for your pet. I think this is a really interesting book to have in schools, libraries, and homes blessed with the companionship of a beloved canine companion.

My thoughts:   The concept of Solve This! is interesting and the wacky challenges a bit off-the-wall. However, the down deep methodology is a pursuit of a way we (or our kids) can solve many problems or challenges faced.

Is the toy tossed across the stream able to be retrieved without wetting one's feet? If you can't leave your room or house and your friend next door wants your book, how to get it to them without involving anyone else to take it to them?

Each challenge is presented with simple drawings taking one through the steps involved. Each challenge also has several "professionals" who chime in with thoughts on the challenge that needs to be solved.

The book is good but I'm not completely enamored with it. Perhaps the engineering aspect is too much of a challenge for this "non-genius." Still good for some kids and their parents can help guide them through the opportunities to Solve This!
