The Jesus Revolution (movie) now available on BLUERAY-DVD & streaming [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts:

Having been a young woman raising my family during the 1970s and a faithful church-going person, I recall the explosive 1970s with the rebellious hippy movement, anti-establishment, anti-war (Vietnam), make-love-not-war, loud, protesting, drug-induced-stupor that exploded around us. Compound this by living in a small town whose main function was the support of a large state-owned university, it was very much in-your-face around us.

I remember, too, that a new "form" of worship and singing (not traditional hymnology) began to emerge that rattled traditional worshipers sensibilities.

Now, on to my screening or viewing of the movie, JESUS REVOLUTION..... the portrayal of the 1970s was pretty spot-on accurate - not 100% but pretty good. The scenes where Greg Laurie and friends were in drug induced stupor were scary just as was reading the news accounts of lives ruined by LSD and other drugs during the 1970s. So  many young people ruined!

I found it interesting that pastor Chuck Smith so easily (in the movie) changed from his traditional pastoral and church preaching to reflect that of vagabond-wanderer street preacher, Lonnie Frisbee. But Smith's acceptance of Frisbee's message of Jesus for all people is the root of the revolution which some tout as the greatest spiritual awakening in American history.

Scenes of lots of young people living together reflect well on the communal living that was so prevalent during the 1970s. This was a major concern of Christians as much of this communal living was not Christian in reality but drug-induced, promiscuous living, cultic religious existences. Not something that would please Jesus. But in JESUS REVOLUTION it was not portrayed in this manner.

All in all I give the movie a 4-star rating for accurate portrayal of the period of history. I give it a 5-star rating for execution of professional photography, direction, and acting. I give it a 5-star rating for showing that there were two elements of this explosive period in America's religious and political history.

I pray that the seed of faith planted those years ago, even though during a tremendously raw political and spiritual period, has sprouted and will again seed our lives with the message of love, hope, and redemption through Jesus Christ.

About JESUS REVOLUTION: In the 1970s, young Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney) is searching for all the right things in all the wrong places: until he meets Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie), a charismatic hippie-street-preacher. Together with Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer), they open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival of radical and newfound love, leading to what TIME Magazine dubbed a JESUS REVOLUTION.
