Must Have Marvin by Christy Ziglar Illustrated by Luanne Marten (A Shine Bright Kids Book) #ShareAMoment - Review and Giveaway for US & Canada Entries

ISBN: 9780824956578
About the book:  Whether it’s in the classroom, on the playground or on the soccer field, Marvin is always finding something new that he simply must have! After discovering whame.t he deems the latest, greatest, new toy, Marvin finds himself focusing a bit too much on getting instead of on giving and excludes his friends. He lets them down when they need his help and nearly loses their friendship. Through a chat with a wise neighbor and a second chance, Marvin learns the important life lesson that people matter more than things.

My thoughts:  Christy Ziglar has launched a terrific program for kids to help with issues they face. I previously reviewed Can't Wait Willow written by Christy Ziglar as part of the Star Bright Kids Program (and website). Now we're reviewing the freshly launched Must Have Marvin.

Marvin is a smart, cute, sweet boy that seems to have his priorities a bit skewed. If he sees it and likes it, he wants it. He must have it. He is "Must Have Marvin." Regardless of his friends and what they need of him. Help with a project. Help for his brother practicing his catching game. Marvin simply must pursue what he wants and when he wants it.

And then he begins to learn the lesson of wanting what he doesn't need and of friendship and caring for others.
The book is beautifully illustrated with expressions that capture the moment and actions that run the gamut. It is colorful and a delight to simply look at, and it will capture children's attention wonderfully reinforcing the text.

I can recommend Must Have Marvin as a teachable moments book that will delight.

  11. My grandkids must always have the latest in sports equipment at all times. We tell them they have to do certain chores, help their parents and earn their "must-haves". I hope that they are learning that they need to save and be thoughtful about what they must have. Sonja dot Nishimoto at gmail dot com

  16. In today's society it is so difficult to not have the "must have mentality". I live in So Cal the land of keeping up with the Jones'. It can be challenging to not jump into the fray but you just have to focus on what is more important like God.

  17. Oh man, I have two 21-month-old toddlers (one my own and one I babysit), and to them everything is "must-have-now." I'm trying to work on not jumping up and doing everything they want when they want it, because I don't want to train them that they can take advantage of me. I want them to grow up realizing that some things are worth waiting for, and I don't want to spoil them.

I'm also interested in the Mommy Loves You books. Even though my kids are older, I still buy them books and inscribe a message inside as a keepsake for them.

  23. I have done very poorly with the Must Have It Now issue. My kids are 4 and I don't want them to have a tantrum in the store in front of others so we went to a dollar store in our area (but everything at our "dollar" store costs $1.50 now) and my daughter had $5 from grandma. When she came up to the counter with 5 items I just paid the difference instead of making her put 2 items back (because of tax too.)

  27. I know sometimes my boys want the latest and greatest video games etc. One time we went to the store to buy one (with their own money they earned) but it was sold out, so they still had to wait. After they played it they saw they really didnt like it all that much.

  32. When our children were young, but old enough to understand the concept of money and buying things, this is what we'd do. If we were at Walmart and they wanted to look at toys, we would tell them we would look " for future reference". That let them know we were simply looking and would not make a purchase that day. We might check the price of a toy so they would know how much they had to save to get it. It is important to learn the difference between a "want" and a "need"!
