Synopsis: It’s AD 30 and everyone is expectantly awaiting the coming Messiah. While Jesus isn’t exactly what they imagined, there is something special about this man. Soon, John, James, Andrew, Peter, and their new friends begin to follow Jesus on an unexpected adventure. This beautiful, 2D-animated story of Jesus is told through the eyes of his beloved young friend, the Apostle John. From the beginning of Jesus’ ministry through his crucifixion and resurrection, LIGHT OF THE WORLD powerfully illustrates how Jesus of Nazareth changed the world forever and still changes lives today! LIGHT OF THE WORLD opens in theaters September 5.

NOTE: "Light of the World" was created as a tool to evangelize and bring people to Jesus around the world.
My thoughts: Having never imaged or pictured any of the 12 disciples of Jesus to be a child or young teen, it took some personal adjustment to accept John, son of Zebedee and brother of James the disciple, as a child and becoming a disciple of Jesus. So I researched a bit and found that some suggest that John may have been in his teens when he began following Jesus. The film pictures Jesus having special affinity or love for this younger disciple as does John for Jesus. (Reference https://www.bibliaon.com.)
I'm not a fan of animation but I really wanted to see this film, and I'm glad I did. I believe there is a clarity of Scriptural presentation of the Bible, Jesus, the disciples, and others in the film. The film clearly shows the fall of man and the salvation through the redemptive work of Jesus.
While there is depiction of the actual cruelty of the crucifixion, it is done so that while children will understand the harshness, it should not create the stuff of nightmares for them. And being an animated film specially created for children, there are some really light hearted moments.
The animation is fantastically done and I was totally impressed. However, beyond the production skills in animation and development, I was most impressed with the clear Biblical teachings and the visualization of what was going on. Characters were cleverly depicted and definitely culturally and racially correct showing Jewish facial features.
This is a powerful presentation and created on a level that children can grasp. It is not "entertainment." It is a beautifully done visual storytelling of the redemption of man through the sacrifice of Jesus.
I give "Light of the World" a rate of 10 out of 10 points.
